The most thrilling and tension filled HS sporting event I ever witnessed was Anoka versus Albert Lea in wrestling in 1972, I think.  The match was at Albert Lea.  They had some ungodly long winning streak.  (This was before multiple classes were introduced, streaks meant more then.)  Albert Lea was then what Apple Valley is now.

The gym was packed to the rafters.  Those people in Albert Lea took their wrestling seriously.

After we won we were unsure if our bus would make it out of town.   ???

KR - +k for a worthy seanachaí.

tmert, seanachai'.  ???

I can barely type it let alone pronounce it or know what the heck it means.  :D

I am with you though on KR's post. Top notch and +k.

Hey KR. Nice seanachai' !  ???      I think.  ;D

There's a reason the Irish spoke Gaelic when the English were around, which was the same reason the English outlawed the speaking of Gaelic - it's a damn hard language to understand.  A few words do get into the lexicon though - like amadan;D

tmerton- don't forget the ever popular curling for a winter sport, though not a HS sport, I believe. Sometime when you're in Minnesota, we should organize a little Stiftungsfestivities bonspiel (now YOU go look up a word!) The St. Paul club let us do that some years ago and it's quite the experience. Of course, they do serve adult beverages at the rink. ;D

I think a winter trip will be in order at some point - rasslin, a bonspiel, some ice fishing.  Hot damn!  8)

bennie,
I see the Blazer swimmers are going to compete in the Orange Bowl Classic in Key Largo on Jan. 6 - you gonna be there cheering?  :P
The older the violin - the sweeter the music!

tmerton, speaking of Gaelic, my son's middle name is Eoin and my daughter's name is Maura Caitlin. The Irish are the best! And this is coming from someone who is 1/4 Irish, 3/4 German. I know how to work hard and have fun at the same time. :D

With your last name, who'd have ever guessed 3/4 German?  That German blood is probably what keeps you from burning the burgers though.  ;D

Eventually, we all become mutts. My paternal grandfather was 100% Irish, but I'm 25%. (Something about those German/Slovenian women around here.) Ex-wife is 50%, so my kids are more Irish than I am.

tmerton- we can fill your weekend with winter fun. But don't forget that one of the best parts of winter sometimes is getting the hell outta here. If the planets line up right, I could be in Vegas in January, Mexico in February, and sailing a catamaran in the Keys in March. (Maybe some of the Bennie swimmers will still be there :o )I love winter!  8)

Careful JR, with my last smack, I just bumped your karma up to 69. How's that for the luck o' the Irish?

Being a hoops guy, wrestling's usually as interesting to me as danceline (which is a sport, countless danceline parents have reminded me over the years. I apologize, Johnnie Red, if you're handing out medals at the state dance team competition this  year).

But the most exciting event I've covered was a wrestling match, one where the team score ended up like 66-0. It was Jackson County Central's Nate Baker against Worthington's Bryan Cowdin, two absolute studs at 160 who were both multiple state champs in their classes. The place was packed for that single match, since the team portion was a slaughter. Baker beat him in the final five seconds with a takedown to win by a point. It really was thrilling. Baker, who went to the U originally, is still wrestling I believe at MSUM, he's probably about 25 now.

I think MUC's going to be able to run on UWW's defense.  SJU (who hasn't had much of a running game since 1999) showed some spurts of being able to run the ball against UWW.  Granted, it wasn't consistent and they didn't stick with it, much to my disappointment.

Duffman;   Are you overlooking the greatest breakout season ever by a St. John's running back in the name of Kent "Sleepy" Crowley circa 2002?  As a senior he bolted from the ranks of special teamers to starting running back and compiled the second greatest rushing total for a single season of all time (1,411 yards, a mere 64 yards off of Tim Schmitz's single season record).  "Sleeepy" lead your final charge through 4 rounds of the DIII playoffs before sucumbing to the Trinity Tigers.

The descendant of the Four Horseman proved money in 2002.

Is there a RB waiting in the wings in 2007 ???

The most intense wrestling meet or match that I have ever witnessed was actually my first: the 2000 South Central Conference meet. St. James (#1 in Class A), Blue Earth Area with Eustices, etc. (#1 in Class 2A) and New Ulm with #1 Zangl (#5 in Class 3A). Nothing better than screaming red/black (St. James) clad fans sitting next to maroon and gold (BEA), sitting across from one whole side of NU fans chanting "Zicke Zacke Zicke Zacke Heu Heu Heu" to no end.

BDB:

Good to see you today..congrats on your son shutting out the opponent under the big lights for his hockey team the other day!

I grabbed some pizza on the way out...I hope that pizza is not a secret in town...man was that good...now I know where to stop for lunch everytime I go to Eau Claire!

Enjoy the gift...I sensed it will come in a distant #3 in rankings to the last few Christmas gifts...at least I can prove I played in one game!

sfury, don't worry, I'm not handing out medals/trophies at the state dance line meet this academic year. I will be doing it at the state meets for wrestling, girls' hockey, track and field and Class 1A baseball, the latter being held here in Chaska.

And where did Jack Eustice get his start as a high school state wrestling champ?  my old school, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (well, then just Janesville). There were some great matches when Eustice's Blue Earth teams went against his old high school coach, Mike Niemczyk.

Dusty: You're right about Crowley. And he didn't do much the first two or three games that year, otherewise he might have broken that single-season record. His last five or six games, he had some incredible numbers. And that was with  Elliott setting records at receiver. How'd Duff and the Johnnies lose that year in the semis   ???
