Think this MIAC-OAC matchup is potentially the greatest national litmus test for DIII football.  Two powerhouse conferences, both with the potential for multiple representatives in the postseason, pitting an understudy of the of the juggernaut against a perpetual candidate to ring the championship bell in Salem.

While Marietta is most probably not the favorite to win the OAC, and in many opinions not the most likely candidate to receive a Pool C, this is a program holding great potential, and one of the Cinderellas to be followed, moreso now with a high profile non-conference matchup.

I don't know if Marietta can match last years record of 6-4, thus I don't know how much of a litmus test this will be.  They are also starting a new QB with little game experience.  Will be a tough opener to play StJU as a first start.

Kirasdad,

Forever a new animal baby.  Met one of my distant nieces today at the family holiday festivites.  Told her she should watch Bill and Chelsea's favorite movie, either Pitch Black or the Chronicles of Riddick (always get them confused), as she has the same name as the female protagonist.

Think the best aspect of this matchup for Marietta has to be the fact such a test comes before the hamburglar drill of the OAC.  But you are right, experience counts for something, but fresh legs count for something as well.  Ask any backup to Ladainian Tomlinson, they always seem to reel off multiple two hundred yard games per season.  We also know 6-4 in the OAC is not the same as 6-4 in any other conference, except maybe the WIAC or most recently the CCIW.

Happy Easter and +kandy to all within reasonable reach.

MacLeod, thanks for the column. Nice to get a football tome in the midst of the off-season dregs.
As for Marietta, I hope it's a contest. Unlike Big 10 teams around here, non-conference games are sometimes the toughest games.

Pep, by the looks of that mapquest info, I'd say your best bet is to fly in here. We're looking forward to entertaining you, but as for the meat....well, let's just say, we've got that covered. Feel free to bring the jalapenos though. I'll make sure there's some koolaid available to put out the fire. And what's this Dr. Pepper? Is that good mixed with vodka?

Feel free to circulate the sheet music in advance and we'll get a combo together to jam with you.

Sorry, but the band itself won't be making the trip.....just yours truly, AUPepBand, will be there. After re-reading my post, I can see how I made it sound like I was bringing a tailgating party, but fact is, those are plans for pre-game festivities at Merrill Field in beautiful Alfred, New York. When in Rome, do as the Romans do......when in Collegeville, I'll do Stiftungsfestivities. The PepBandBurgers will be grilled at Alfred's home games.

P.S. Dr. Pepper is the official soft drink of AU Pep Band. Because of underage band members and University policy, members of AU Pep Band will not be seen consuming alcohol at football games. The band is rowdy enough without intoxicating influences.
On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

AUPepBand, I'm actually sitting at my desk drinking a diet Dr. Pepper this morning listening to ColdPlay. Good warmup for the Stiftungsfestivities. If you should need a ride up to Collegeville on September 1, let me know. Savage is not that far from where I live. It will be great to have you as our esteemed guest.

Moving to another subject, any thoughts about a proposal from the Minnesota wrestling coaches association to move the number of weight classes back from 14 to 12? If that does happen, Minnesota would be the only state in the nation with 12 weight classes.

What are they looking at getting rid of?  I think they could easily do away with 103 and 112.

A tradition unrivaled...

I am looking for double digit runs out of the Twins tonight.

Pavano's +8 ERA ain't going down tonight as the boyz warm up and light it up.

Now if Ponson can trust his defense....

Hopefully, Sidney has realized how fortunate he is to land in this bed of roses and get his pitching career back on track. Defense should be good enough if Bartlett can settle down. Our man Carlos deserved a better fate on Saturday, but for Cuddy's bone-headed base running. Take that play away, and the Twinks could be the only undefeated team in baseball right now.

fins, I agree that Hi Yo Silva, Away! deserved better.

Cuddy not knowing that there was only 1 out is a joke.

How much responsibilty goes on the 3rd base coach on that one?  ???

I was thinking the same thing when I was watching the game. Scotty Ullger has been less than impressive so far--sending Morneau when he should've stayed, holding Mauer when he should've gone, and you'd think the fact that there was only one out would've come up when they're standing 3 feet apart at 3rd base. WTF do they talk about out there? ("Hey check out that chick in the front row. Doesn't she look cute in her parka and mittens?")
I wonder if Newmie's still available. ???

Fins, Here's to #700 on the karma meter!
I fly any cargo that you can pay to run
The bush league pilots, they just can't get the job done
You've got to fly down the canyon, don't never see the sun
There's no such thing as an easy run
