Amen! That is a terrible nasty mess. From here it looks like the bridge caved in in THREE places.

The TV here in Colorado makes the Mpls mess look like the Oakland earthquake - bummer.

Looks like things aren't going to get any better with a line of storms on their way into the cities

This is definitely going to put a damper on the groundbreaking of the new twins stadium tomorrow

They've already canceled it.

If you've never been to Minneapolis, that bridge feeds the entire North and Northeast portion of the metro into downtown Minneapolis as well as a major river crossing to get anywhere on the West side of the river, and is the main drag for the U of Minnesota.  I just hope the death toll stays so low, as this happened at rush hour and right before a Twins game.

God bless the victims, god bless the rescuers.  If anyone knows of any way to help, let us all know.

They didn't cancel tonight's Twins game in order to keep the people at the Dome of the highway.  Tomorrow's game and festivities are postponed.

Sounds like a lot of heroics from regular people who were the first people on the scene.

Prayers go out to victims and families.

Early break to the posting hiatus then I'm back to it.

Thoughts and prayers to all those on the bridge tonight especially those who lost their lives and their families.

My brother-in-law lived literally a block from the bridge while going to dental school up until about a month ago. I've walked across that bridge... scary stuff.

As Esq said, hopefully the death toll stays low and the injured recover quickly and fully. :'(

Times like these we realize how unimportant sports really are in the grand scheme of things.

I'm out, back in 30 days.
Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.

Bastard!

For what it's worth, I have a couple uncles and cousins working on the construction crew that is doing the repair job on the bridge. I would be beyond amazed if this work had anything to do with the bridge collapse.

All of the work was being done to the bridge deck and should have no impact on the structural integrity of the bridge itself. Depending on the specs for this type of work, they mill off from 3 to 6 inches of existing concrete and pour a new slab of reinforced concrete on top of that. The weight of the material pales in comparison to the traffic that constantly travels over the bridge.

I spoke with an uncle this evening--he's in a supervisory position on the job and their company trailer was located on the road right below the bridge. He may be full of it, but apparently his exact quote yesterday when looking at the bridge from beneath it was "Why the f--- are we wasting our time repairing this piece of s---? It should just be torn down."

I'd imagine it was probably a confluence of a few different factors--somewhat warm temperatures, added weight/movement of the construction crews, traffic being rerouted to unusualy parts of the bridge--that conspired to bring it down.  Should be interesting to hear what the experts have to say.

Family is safe, by the way.  All but one member of the construction crew were accounted for, last I heard.  Hopefully the final toll isn't as bad as it appears.

I thought of the Bay Bridge, too. On the news tonight, it looked as if an earthquake had hit.

My condolences to Minnesota.
