If you can believe it I'm sitting at my computer  watching video clips that I shot from a 2002, 9-man state quarterfinal game at Nicollet vs. Chokio-Alberta Herman Norcoss.  My older brother is the coach at Nicollet.
Picture a pasture cleared for a football field, no stadium, just bleachers and most of the fans are standing on the sidelines.  It's got cowbells and screems from the fans as if their very lives depended on winning or losing this game!
IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON!

One of our starting Safeties, Jamie Wagner, played on that Nicollet team (I believe he would have been a senior)

I know who Jamie is....he was a monster as far a 9-man football.  I actually have partially disowned my brother for wanting Bethel to win last year.  My brother graduated from SJU.
Nicollet had a couple kids on that team that played in the MIAC.

He didn't want Bethel to win in the head-to-head, did he?  Surely you're referring to him pulling for Bethel indirectly by pulling for Wags - and in all contests besides the Royal/Johnny matchup?

Wow! Lots of responses to the Mac facilities, with lots of people pointing out the mistakes that seem to have been made. Which reminds me of a quote Papa Wonka loves to reference from the old Cobber basketball coach, Sonny Gulsvig:

"They could screw up a wet dream."
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Wonka - I know you weren't taking offense to the pointing out of mistakes, but it brings up a good point: that the type of person who posts in a chat room is typically the type of person to point out errors.  Don't know why that seems to be the case, but I know that to be true for myself.

Also, was Coach Gulsvig speaking of the Scotts, or was that a pet saying of his?

It was just a pet saying of his. I'm guessing he was usually talking about his own team, with a closed environment like a film session being the likely setting.

It's clearly too good to hide though :)

Wonka - does anybody ever tell you that you look a lot like Emilio Estevez?

He was pulling for Bethel for Jaime's sake...he felt that SJU would get into the playoffs and get a share of the conference.

I personally wouldn't ever anyone else, especially Bethel to beat SJU even if I had a flesh and blood relative, including my own child, on the team.  I figure they get what they deserve by playing for anyone other than SJU!

Your own child?  Now that's loyalty... I guess.   ;)

First...I only have daughters....If I did have a son and he was a football player he would know long before attending college where my alligiance is.

Any help from the Johnnie faithful???

Oldbethel, remember that at SJU we've been disowning brothers, sisters and children for attending St. Thomas for over 100 years.  We're pretty used to it by now.   ::)

C'mon, I know of plenty Bethel grads who would rather give their left eye than their sons to St. John's.  You'd do the same!  ;D

Wet dreams references? Just what kind of films were they watching in these closed sessions! ;D ;)

johnnie_esq - I don't doubt that for a split-second, and it would be more than difficult (more like impossible) for me to cheer for St. John's to beat Bethel IF my son were playing for the Johnnies... but let's admit we're talking about a VERY LARGE "IF" here.  I can think of one scenario for each side:

1) Bethel grad, son attends SJU - The Bethel Grad probably didn't attend Bethel for the evangelical Christian atmosphere, in which case he probably doesn't have a deep loyalty to Bethel (I'm not broadly defining Loyalty as based on the existence of an evangelical Christian atmosphere.  I'm defining loyalty to Bethel as generally so).
2) SJU grad, son attends BU - SJU grad becomes an evangelical Christian subsequent to graduating from SJU (again, not implying in the least that attending SJU precludes one from being an evangelical Christian), in which case he probably has a new loyalty to Bethel based on his newfound evangelical Christian values.

I'm not trying to imply anything good or bad in either situation, just stating what I believe to be the most likely cause for each case.

Bipolar disorder would be a more likely explanation. ;D
