Just added the sports pack on DirecTV -- thanks for the heads-up.
Hmm, though will your new job you'd be on FIOS ... don't suppose I could put a Slingbox on your feed :)

Austin Murphy's got a new book out. It's probably the second-best book he's ever written about college football:

AO - Seeing as how Auggie Tech started 11 freshmen last season and you beat them by 7 (31-24) in the first game of the season, I don't think it's a stretch to expect some major improvement from the Doggies of '07. But maybe that's just me and the rest of the MIAC faithful losing our grip on reality ::)

fins - That story was better the first time it was posted ;)

Was anyone else nervous when Addai went down on the FIRST PLAY OF THE SEASON? Good thing he's come back strong or my fantasy season would be over already...
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

This Colts fan sitting in Hopkins, MN was a bit scared - however I trust anyone that Polian picks up as a backup.

I hope Augie does well - the person who hired me into development work is now the prez, and one of my favorite colleagues is the Advancement Services director there.

Pat, Good to hear that you got the DirecTV Sports Package. I've had it for over a year now, and though I get frustrated at times when some games are "not shown in your area" for reasons that I'm not familiar with (I know contractual limitations are involved, but some things just don't make sense to me) it is a great addition. Last Sunday, I watched part of the Wooster/John Carroll game, and was amazed that not only didn't they give any SJU/ Marietta updates, there was no mention, at least while I was watching, of the MUC massacre.

For those of you that want to see the biggest hit of Ritz 72's career go back and review his response to Pat C on page 2003....ouch!!! :o  Too bad to hear about Gar, truly a class act.

Congrats to Ole, Nick Rydberg for being on D3football week 1's Team of the week.

LB Nick Rydberg, Sr., St. Olaf
Rydberg tallied 14 tackles (eight solo), 4.5 tackles for a loss, and one sack in the Oles 26-19 win over Luther.

And goodluck to all MIAC teams this weekend, hopefully the conference overall will have a better showing than the couple non-conference losses we had week 1. I'm heading up North to Deer River to see the well traveled Coach Paul Miller tear it up against the always popular Crosby-Ironton. This will be my first experience watching small school high school ball, still 11 man though -- it can't be too different.

FreeBird-
Your post asking for Johnson to be fired is so laughable I'm not sure if it was meant in jest, but for discussion sake I'll assume that you're serious.  Is Coach Johnson himself an alumnus of the program?  Yes.  Has be brought a sustained level of success unlike anything else Bethel football has had in its history?  Yes.  Does he fit in with the kind of leadership and mentorship that Bethel wants from its coaches?  Yes.  In light of these facts, I'd say the man has earned the right to stay a while longer ;).  Let's say you get your wish and Johnson gets canned; do you have somebody in mind that could take the program to that "next level"?  Or would you just pull a Red McCombs and fire a coach without an obviously better replacement option?

Carl,

All of those are valid points, but let me ask you this.  Do you think Coach J is capable of winning on the national level? Do you think Coach J can put together a good string of seasons with out major let down game like against Carlton?

Marty Schottenheimer went 14-2 last season with the Chargers, lost right away in the playoffs, and was fire.  Did he earn the right to stay a little longer?  Obviously coaching changes in the NFL happen much more often and a school like Bethel values more than wins and loses in their coaches.  I think that is what you were getting at when saying he has earned the right to stay around a little longer.

I just think if we want to be an elite team we need an elite coach which in my opinion Coach J is not.

So the biggest question remains...after you've gotten rid of Coach J, who is this "elite coach" you're going to get to replace him?  I hear Bill Cowher isn't coaching right now, but I'm not sure how he'd feel about the pay cut ;).

There was much more to the Schottenheimer firing than the playoff loss, and they replaced him with a guy whose track record as a head coach is far from stellar.  Interesting to see how that one works out for the Bolts.

Even the almighty SJU has a let-down game every once in a while.  They'd tell you that happens any time they lose to Bethel.  Am I right, Johnnies? :D

Do I think Coach Johnson can win at the national level?  Three wins in the last 6+ years against a National Championship winning program would indicate that he can.  I don't know why the playoff struggles persist the way they do, but I don't think a coaching change is the answer.

Duff, are you all set to watch your Alma Matter on FSN tonight?

Geesh.  Tech looked good.  Sartell did not.  Special teams were horrendous.  Tough to win when you give them the ball with ridiculously good field position nearly every change of position.  Tech didn't have to move the ball much to score.  I thought Tech's line and linebackers really controlled the game.

A tradition unrivaled...

So Duff, are you telling me there's a chance that my Alma Mater could finally beat yours this year?
