Johnnie Red

My thanks to everyone who joined us at the Stiftungsfestivities yesterday, especially all the Cobber posters/fans and Smedindy. It might have been one of the best tailgates ever, especially given the way the game went. I, along with many Johnnies, was pleasantly surprised given the experiences of the past three years when playing the Cobbers.

So what do you think about taking the Stiftungsfestivities on the road this coming Saturday to Northfield and, as recommended, host it at Carleton and invite any Gusties who want to make an appearance? Let me know your thoughts.

Good game for the Badgers last night in Madison. My son, a recent grad, drove back with some of his buddies on Friday in the hope of getting some tickets for the game. No luck. :-\ They ended up watching the game at an establishment on State Street. Probably not the worst place to watch a college football game. ;)

All the best from Johnnie Red, the Alex Kofoed of Johnnie fans! ;)

M&G pretty much summed up what I would've said for a response to the CC/SJU game.

However, Stiffyfest was awesome!  A huge thanks to JR, Fins, Veek, TC, ROR and everyone else I am forgetting to mention in this post.. Wait 105, Dusty, Duff  good to have met you all.  Raiderguy very nice appetizers too.  The Koolaid was delicious as well as the burgers JR very, very tasty and thanks for the tickets.

It's up to the cobbers now on how they want to finish the season.  Playoff chances are .1% if they win out, but very unlikely.  If they play with intensity and pride they could go 7-3.  I am not sure if the secondary can hold up to STO, but that game is a few weeks away.

Lastly, congrats to SJU.  A great team that doesn't make many mistakes and took advantage of CC's 5 Turnovers.  When your QB has more completions to the opposing team than his own the game will not be good.

Keep on playing tough Cobbers!

After reading the SJU write up and the mention of the big running back, Kellen Blaser from Austin,
I am wondering if he is related to Jen Blaser, a basketball standout at CSB from a few years ago.

Can anyone answer that question?

Thanks!

Hang in there holbi. Somebody will answer you.

Long time listener, first time caller.   :P

As an SJU alum, I've been reading the postings here for a long time.  Happy to join Johnnie Nation on D3Football, which is probably slightly larger than all of Gopher Nation at this point.

My first impressions of the discussions and MIAC this year:
1.  Very predictable participation from non-SJU posters so far (which is great).  How many will still be posting in November? I seem to remember a certain Big Red Machine losing at home last November. None of the SJU posters left then, so why should the non-SJU posters if they happen to lose this fall?
2.  Keating won a national championship as a 27-year-old senior - enough said.
3.  The upper echelon (BU, Stolaf, CC, SJU) of the MIAC has more company than in the past, despite the SJU/CC game yesterday. I love how tons of posters still include an 0-2 CC team who just got smoked, but not an undefeated Gustie squad in their lists.
3(b).  St. Thomas is not close to be included in the group above, as evidenced by the fact that  I have never looked forward to the Hamline/UST game until this year. The Tommies are VERY bad...almost as bad as the Vikes.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Thanks to all the hospitable folks at the Stiftungsfest yesterday. Great food, great company, great setting...'nuff said. Now that I've had nearly 24 hours to digestthe day's events and had a chance to catch up on the previous posts, I'd like to reflect a bit.

First, I thought this was a game where SJU's execution was simply flawless (spare the opening series and after the first stringers were mercifully put to rest), and the Cobber attack both sides of the ball was as sharp as a wrestling mat. If the Johnnies are that mechanistic the rest of the way out...look out d3! Fortunately, the Cobbers have Augsburg at home next week to take their frustrations out on. Of course, that's what I thought last year when it took OT to get 'er done.

Second, somehow it was easier to be on the foot end of a monkey-stomp than to experience the evisceration of the heart that accompanied the outcome the past two years. I suspect the players feel differently. Certainly, I would have preferred a nailbiter as a sideline participant (no spectators!), but not if it's gonna land me in a coronary ICU.

Finally, as far as "non-SJU" posters falling off as the season goes on, as one previous post alluded, that should be somewhat expected. When a team is not in contention for the conference title or playoffs, either your game-related contributions get justifiably ignored, or you need to join in the musings about the remaining meaningful matchups. The latter will be fun for some but not all.

More finally...Vikes lose.

Maybe it was because that a certain Big Red Machine was still very much alive in the National Playoff Hunt?  I do like the Tommie excerpt though. ;D

Pat: Obviously, Mount Union is riding a huge winning streak...but where would GAC's current 7-gamer fit into the national picture? Is it even close to one of the best in D3 right now?

I didn't put much stock in the fact that Gustavus closed out 2006 with four straight wins, but the winning mentality seems to have carried over nicely. The Gusties have outscored opponents 234-97 during that stretch.

Now, seven games may not seem like much to you Johnnies...but coming from a program who's had trouble with the likes of Hamline in recent years (losing 2 of 3 before last week I believe) it seems like we're the Trojans all of a sudden ;D

Thanks Duffman! Very classy indeed and while I have time I'm gonna sprinkle everybody on the last 3 or 4 pages with good karma.

Someone mentioned he's a St. Thomas student now.  True?

I hear you on your Gustie mention.  But I have a hard time believing GAC beats CC.  Plus GAC has beaten two of the bottom-feeders of the MIAC, which they should.  When they beat BU, Olaf, CC, or SJU, then you can get back to me.  CC is 0-2 with the antithesis of the GAC schedule...It doesn't change reality.

WAHOO3

I'm excited for the Ole/Gac game this weekend. I honestly think it will be a good test for both teams. Willy, maybe you know, when was the last time the Gusties beat the Oles in Northfield? GAC beat up on the Oles in the early 2000's but the games were always either at the Dome or in St. Peter. It has to be back in 99 or 98, I'm assuming. Its Ole homecoming on Saturday, and I'm wishing for good weather.

That question made me wonder when the last time the Oles won in Arden Hills. We've won everywhere else in the past 5-6 years, but thats the one place that I can't remember the Oles coming away with a win.

Wahoo,

I looked on the Olaf site and before 2000 I could not find any win/loss records by game. But, by looking at the 2 school's records back then I'm just guessing that it may be even earlier that 1998.

SUMMIT!!!!!

a quick glance at the BU site shows Bethel beating Olaf at home in 2000 and 1998 and at Olaf in 2001, 1999 & 1997. thats as far back as they show. based on Olaf record in the MIAC, I'd say 1994 is the most recent possibility.

Outstanding again. There aren't words to describe how your efforts make the whole Saturday experience complete.

Smedindy,
Great meeting you and explaining the call sign. Hope you make it to a few more games this year and there is always the playoffs. Maybe there will be a Wabash/MUC sighting later this year and a trip to ALLIANCE! ;D

Cobbernation and all the other Cobber fans I met.....it was great and as you were able to see for yourself, the Johnnies are all about sportsmanship and friendship until your team hits the field. Then it is all business. Your guys did hit the field a couple of times...real hard. Good luck with the rest of your season.
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!
