Thanks Pat...

Guess I hve one more question...SJU wins out and is 10-0 with 10 regional wins, UWW wins out and has 9 regional wins, who is the top seed in the west?

Pat Coleman

Well, it'd be dependent on the strength of schedule, which as we know, has changed this year to measure opponents' winning percentage and opponents' opponents' winning percentage. It would also be dependent on results against regionally ranked teams.

A UWW team that runs the table would have a win against Mary Hardin-Baylor, which would help both of those facets. In this hypothetical, UWW is likely to have strong numbers.

How far will SJU fall even if we win? After the discussion on the WIAC board this past week-SJU may fall to 6 or 7.

I expect to fall out of the top 10.  The way we played today that's where we should be
ranked.

Ha Chris you are so dramatic.  We'll be fine.  The Johnnies own the 3rd qtr.

Looks like it must have been a long term lease.  Tom Stock forgot to make the monthly payment.

Another false start-- two in a row for Carleton.  Perhaps they are just doing false start penalties as they wind the clock?

Don't know what the boys said on the radio, but that is exactly what they were attempting to do.

Wow-can we brorrow the phrase winning ugly??

Ugly is not strong enough.  Hideously ugly is more appropriate.

A win is a win.  It's baffling to me how the Johnnies could look like such a finely tuned
offensive machine last week and look like they did today.  Yes, the conditions had something to do with it.  But that's not the whole story.  Carlton played in the same conditions and they are not close to the talent level of the Johnnies.

I think (hope) today's game will serve as a wake up call.  The focus and determination
needs to be there every Saturday; not just the "big" games like Concordia, Bethel and St. Olaf.

On the Koefed topic.  I think one thing Alex has not had for most of his career at SJU is
someone to teach him how to think like a quarterback.  There has not been a quarterback coach on staff since Charlie Welsh in 2004.  He's been the starting QB since the first game of his freshman year.  Linnemann and Keating both had experienced quarterbacks around early in their careers to teach them.  Keating also had Kurt Ramler for a year.

Bottom line:  Alex wins games.  I'd say he does pretty well in big games, in playoff games.  He didn't have a great game at UWW in 2005.  He didn't get a lot of help and UWW had a great defense.  In 2006 he played well, again against a great defense.

The offense is built around Alex.  The Johnnies will go as far as Alex take us this year.

What's with the preoccupation with ratings anyway? Those things always seem to work themselves out ...

Instead, how about Meidt hyping his wideouts as "two of the best receivers in the country" in the Sunday Strib?

Here's guessing that Reusse checks in this week, possibly on game day .... especially since it's bye week for the Vikes.

Hopefully they will have enough time to reinforce the support structure for the press box at Clemens Stadium.

What constitutes a bye week for the Vikes?

I think SJU will stay in the top 10.  They won and have a reputation for being a good team.  I think Carleton is an underrated team.  I have met Coach Ramler at lacrosse games, and I think he brings a lot to the table.  He seems to be pushing the strong academics and overall quality of life at Carleton to athletes.  I also talked with a few students from Carleton who told me that he is constantly asking guys that played in high school to come play at Carleton.  I am very impressed with him.  Carleton does have a few good players, and you have respect them.

St. Olaf needs to stop giving teams a short field.  Special teams were horrible for the Oles.  A kick off return to your 25 is really bad.  A blocked punt deep in your zone is also bad.  Keeping GAC to under 12 points in the first half was key.  The defense rose to the challenge.  Mitch Anderson for GAC played well.  He had the huge return, and some long runs.  I think St. Olaf adjusted well to his running the ball.  I question Stolp's abilities some.  His stance under center looks gives me the impression that he wants to get out of there too quickly.  I also question the audibles coming from the bench.  It seemed like Olaf was picking up on those signals.  Also it further leads me to question the confidence in Stolp.  Stolp threw for 213 at a 50% completion percentage with 2 TDs and 2 picks which are bad numbers for him, so you know he has some skills.

I do agree with Meidt's comment about having 2 of the best receivers in the country.  Gant and Schmeising are great players with a lot of speed and good size.  That presents a lot of problems for teams.

I am unable to make it to the game at SJU due to lacrosse games.  I might end up being the ref for one of the SJU lacrosse games.  The Carleton players will tell you that I always wear my St. Olaf shirts, but they know I am fair during the game.  This is a different St. Olaf team than last year.   It should be a very good team, and I think the Olaf D will keep the game closer than in years past.  I really think St. Olaf has to put more points on the board this year.  They can't keep scoring 20+ points less than their average against SJU and hope to win.

There's a fall lax season?  I know the D-1 programs have a fall season and some exhibition games but I didn't realize club teams have a fall season as well.

I'm hoping that St. Johns puts it to the Oles big like they did a few years ago when the Oles went up there cocky and undefeated.  While I'm not a fan of the Johnnies, my hatred for the Oles is much, much greater.

CC Knight: Is it the words to the Um Ya Ya song or is it Chris Meidt? We take a poll every year. So far this year, it's a tie ;)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Johnnie Red

Frankrickard and Willy Wonka, thanks for bringing the culinary delights to the Stiftungsfestivities yesterday. Much appreciated. The brats from the famous meat market in Nicollet were excellent.

I had an Ole stop by yesterday wondering if they could join us for the tailgate this coming Saturday. Oles are more than welcome to join us for the party.

Tough game to watch yesterday. Given all the upsets around the country, a win by the Knights would have made the day very special for those who enjoy the favorites losing. Just remember that Carleton beat Bethel last season, who in turn beat the Johnnies. Hopefully we can bring our "A" game back to Collegeville next Saturday when the Oles come to town. Given the fact that it is the Johnnie homecoming and the game is between two unbeaten teams, I would imagine we should be close to ten or eleven thousand fans at Clemens Stadium. Hope the weather cooperates.

TC

The 7-Day forecast for Collegeville:  High of 67, scattered thunderstorms, 40% chance of precipitation, 100% change of Johnnies win.
St. John's Football: Ordinary people doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.

I listened to the SJU/CC game yesterday and couldn't help but think about some similarities with the SJU @ UST game from 2003.  In fact, Lewandowski even mentioned it as well on the radio.

Even though the conditions were not perfect (and we cannot ever expect them to be), the boys need to use this as a wake-up call to focus for the SO game this week.  When Kofoed drops back to pass, every play could be a TD or an awful interception.  It doesn't feel as if there is much middle-ground.

Johnnie Fans:
The sky is not falling!
Those of us that have watched SJU teams over the years have seen a number of these hiccup type games.  Remember 2003 versus UST in St. Paul?
Yesterday had a number of factors going in Carleton's favor.  The Knights were clearly focused and motivated to win for their coach.  Another huge advantage is that Ramler knows about everything the Johnnies want to do.
Without the SJU turnovers, that were self-imposed, the Johnnies would have won comfortably.
I also think that St. John's teams often have trouble getting up for certain games.  That won't be an issue on Saturday.  Should be a great game.  Probably a closer contest than recent years.

Do the J's drop in the polls for this performance?

It really doesn't matter.  They win them all and they're in the tournament.

The rankings are going to be very interesting given the fact that three teams in the Top 10 lost, along with #12 Linfield.  http://www.d3football.com/schedule.html
