Hubert Humphrey's campaign general was a guy named Fred Gates. (They used to say to win an election you needed Fred Gates and plant gates).
Fred's line on how to win a  state-wide election in Minnesota was that you must carry the 3 major areas in MN that began with "D" -  you needed "Duloot, Darange, and Dacities."

Stanbob,
I don't post until later on in the morning because I have class in the early morning, and that takes priority over Post Patterns.

Dear Ole faithful,

All I have heard you folks talk about is how much faster your team is, especially the wide outs.  I don't understand why these rollie oles will be faster than last years rollie oles.

This game will come down to execution and SJU will win

They will be faster this year for the same reason that the Johnnies will be faster.  They will be playing on sprintturf, not grass.

So by the transitive properties of geometry, knowing that SJU is faster than St. Olaf, and that both teams will be playing on Sprintturf, and running on Sprintturf is faster than running in mud; SJU will still be faster than St. Olaf despite St. Olaf on Sprintturf being faster than St. Olaf in mud.

I don't think that any speed differential between the two teams will be a significant factor on Saturday.  Both teams have good speed.  Some other Ole backers have said that the Oles will be running all over the Johnnies b/c the are playing on an artificial surface.  My point was that the Johnnies are too, and that talking about the field conditions is a moot point because it's going to be the same for both teams.

That question was legit ...

When did they start speaking English on Da Range???

Very true! My dad is from Hibbing! :D I use to tease him that I was going to print up a t-shirt that said "When I die I know I will go to heaven, I've already been to Hibbing!" ;D

Northern Minnesota accent+Texas accent...he may as well have been speaking Finnish! ;)

Not being a MIAC geography major... How far away is STO from SJU and how well do their fans travel. I doubt any of that will matter but I was just curious.

Its about 2 to 2 1/2 hours from Northfield to Collegeville.  The school is ordering buses for students who don't want to drive themselves to the game. Last game at SJU the buses had a decent turnout. We will have to see who gets on the bus and who drives themselves. I wouldn't expect a monster turnout from Ole students but I also wouldn't expect the visitor stands to be anything less than full.

hell has frozen over

Hell is frozen over in Milton's Paradise Lost.

If memory serves me correctly, the 9th circle (lowest / worst part) of hell in The Inferno by Dante was frozen as well.

Dang Carleton students.  I got Paradise Lost and Dante's Inferno mixed up since they are often taught together.  The scary part is that I am an English major, but my focus was generally on Writing and American literature.  I think this quote from Animal House pretty much sums my feelings towards Milton.

[None of his literature students are paying attention]
Jennings: Don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible.
[Bell rings, students rise to leave]
Jennings: But that doesn't relieve you of your responsibility for this material. Now I'm waiting for reports from some of you... Listen, I'm not joking. This is my job!

This really goes against my grain Olefan, but I am compelled to give you +k for the Milton reference plus the tie-in to the Animal House quote.

You Oles are smart!  ;)

bennie - don't dispair, this is only the second game I've seen in two years that has been the French broadcast. As I alluded to before though, it was probably easier to watch than a Coyotes or Sabres originated broadcast. sacre blue!
