Do you really want to win on a "safety first" penalty?   Little accidents that don't affect the actual play shouldn't decide games.

Do I WANT to win on that penalty?  Quite simply - NO.  However, what is the ref to do?  If STO goes down and gets a winning score, what is to be said then?  I hated the way the game ended, but why is nobody talking about the fact that the Ole defender put the ref in the position to make such a call?

The refs huddled to discuss the penalty for some time.  My guess is that the fact that this happened to the QB was not immaterial to the discussion.  It wasn't as if Kofoed was scrambling.

VOJ: thanks for the post. As Red pointed out, I am listening to the game and I do get a lot of my information from the radio guys, who are quite good. Other information from the guys at the game.

Did SJU win on that penalty?  SJU won because:
Hutchins injury
Inability of STO to make Gant (arguably the best offensive athlete on the field) a bigger part of their offense.
Inability of the STO long snapper to twice get the ball back to the (arguably) best kicker in the league.
Inability of the STO defenders to intercept any passes on a day when Kofed was often off the mark and often unable to throw a clean spiral (what was that all about - hand injury?)
STO coaches going for a field goal instead of go ahead TD when they knew they were severely wounded and tired defensively.
Bottom line SJU pulled it out through determination, some luck, some desperation and probably a lot of prayers while the oles were celebrating after taking their 9 point lead, forgetting where they were.  Tis a magical place indead.

I would say the freebird hit it on the nail a couple days before the game when he said that the Johnnies would win with better execution.  I'm hoping Gustavus will execute a bit better at home next week, and the Johnnies might get another nail-biter.

Both the Johnnies and Olaf need to shore up their special teams.  According to the paper the Ole snaps have not been a problem.  The Oles fair caught one punt that surely should have been returned.  The Johniies need to work on stopping both kickoff and punt returns.  No fumbles allowed on any special, ever.  Yesterday was the first game I saw the Johnnies this season.  They win early and the students hit the beach if they execute on special teams.   A lot of hard hits during this one, not to be gruesome but how many helmets came off?

An exciting game yesterday with the Oles, that kept us all guessing until the end.

A game story is up on www.JohnnieFootball.com

It was nice to see everyone at the Stiftungfestivities. A rare sighting of OAS.

Good luck to OAS today in the TC Marathon.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Well, you're hoping for a lot then.  In the last two games against St. Olaf and Bethel, we haven't come close to functioning well enough to beat them.  Putting yourself in a 21-0 hole against Bethel just doesn't cut it.  Penalties and turnovers are killing this team against the better competition.  When they don't do those things, they can move the ball on anyone.  Hopefully they pull it all together this week for homecoming against the Johnnies.

I will contact Patrick's early this week and set up an appropriate meeting time before the game.  I highly suggest any Johnnie and any other fans to come down to the game and check out our new stadium and what I hope to be a good game.

After reading the Star Trib article, it appears that the MVP of the game yesterday was somebody named "Johnnie Magic."  I don't seem to be able to find him on the roster.  Was that a late substitution?  Does anyone know how many years of elgibility he has left?  It seems that none of the regulars (if you read the Strib article and Meidt's quotes) had anything to do with the victory.   ;)

I'll take our 6-0 record to Gustavus next week, though... ;D

This Johnnie fan was very impressed with Ole's squad.  Could definitely be a factor in the playoffs if they make it.  To be honest, I hope they do.

Personally, I thought Koefed struggled much of the day even though his stats turned out pretty nice.  In the end, however, he didn't throw any pics or turn the ball over and that was a big key for SJU.

My take is the game came down to execution and the Jays did so just well enough to win.

On another note, here is what I saw of the facemask.  Of course, everyone can draw their own conclusion...

If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

A mere 180-degree "touch," eh?

Put the QB in Ole threads and have Gunderson grabbing ... and if it hadn't been called the Oles would have been crying for years.

I really don't understand all the flap about that call. Any ref who let that go should be banned from ever doing another game.

Very nice Brice...Good to be able to see what everyone is talking about...I don't understand the reasong for the debate on whether it should have been called or not...very clear.
