Fantastic.  Some of the other stuff wasn't too bad.  Victoria Bitter, Toohey's New and Carleton Cold were decent, but paled in comparison to Crown, but we could only afford so much of that stuff.  It's funny though how you can only get Foster's in tourist type bars.

I also went to Australia, back in 2001, and fell in love with Victoria Bitter. A friend of mine went their for his honeymoon and was kind enough to bring me back a bottle of VB.  I've searched liquor stores and online, but havent found anywhere that I can get it from.
I'm pretty sure I gained 25 pounds of "beer muscle" on my trip--a coach of mine straight up called me fat when I got back.  Put it was worth it for those delicious VBs.
I'd post a lot more if I had a real job

Interesting happenings in Menomonie last night in HS football.

MHS lost their first conference game after running 47 wins in a row in the Big Rivers Conference. (Hudson, River Falls, Eau Claire teams, Chippewa Falls, Rice Lake.)

First loss in the home stadium that opened in 2001.

Have won the past 16 of 19 conference championships, and probably lost it this year to ChipFalls when the home squad missed a tying extra point with seconds to go on the clock.

Those are absurd numbers for any football program and the second smallest school in the conference.

Well, it's a bit after 2am so goodnight all.  Hopefully, I go to bed early tomorrow night so I can get up at 4am to listen to the game.

Go the J's!  I think both the O and D will be sharp this game.  Look for Concordia, round 2.  47 - 17 Johnnies with 14 points coming after the first team leaves 5 minutes into the second half.

And as a final comment on Aussie beer (thanks all for indulging me) my favorites are Boag's Premium and Cascade Premium.  Both Tasmanian.  Crownies are pretty good, but taste best out of a glass and some days you just need to drink from a bottle.

You were an offensive lineman.  You were supposed to be pleasantly plump :D

SamWill47-- Your buddy Ritz can give you more clues if these don't help....Two weeks ago I blew up Ritz on his claim that in 93 he paved the way for the 700 pt offense...I reminded him that he was on the 2nd team (although they did play alot).  His response was that I needed loosen the sleeves on my arms and the neck roll.  He also said I lost alot of blood flow to my brain long-snapping so much.  I hope that helps ;D

A review of the film will confirm my claim.  I scared the return man into having the ball bounce off his shoulder pads...it rolled into the end zone....we both dove for it....and I gave it to you at the bottom of the pile.....Olineman are not supposed to score TDs.  I did proceed to let the St. Thomas bench and fans know what I thought of them...watch the film and you will see what I'm talking about.
Read my post Tooth... Never claimed to have been a starter, never!  You need to relax a little son!   ;D  What did you use to "blow me up"??  Wow you have a great memory of the guys who played..., you REALLY put me in my place!!!  ???

I will take Mariucci or Mariucci West any day over the National Concrete Center, and I'd take the DECC twice on Saturdays-- I may even think of going to the Kohl hole instead.  My personal favorite is how SCSU fans (also known around the WCHA as "Jan Brady State U." after their complaints about big sister Minnesota "Marsha-Marsha-Marsha!") have a habit of making a "Golden Chokers" chant.  This from a university that has a Zero point zero winning percentage in the NCAA playoffs.

Just like everything on the SCSU campus, the National Hockey Center isn't fancy, but I do enjoy watching games there.  The place would be looking at an upgrade if law makers would have approved the equivalent of about 8% of the money they approved for the new Gopher football stadium for an addition to the NHC.  I can't say anything to refute the "Jan Brady State U." comment.  I really think the MNSCU mission will always prevent SCSU from becoming the school that I would like to see it become.  I have some ideas about how changes could be made, but hockey is already far enough off topic...

Forgive me, but asking for a handout from the legislature to improve an arena that was a gift by the legislature to begin with is absolutely ludicrous-- especially because St. Cloud residents voted down a sales tax increase to improve the civic center-- so the state reps go to the legislature to fund an addition to the concrete center to function as the civic center instead.  Umm....why?   That it was even considered by the legislature more than ticked me off.  Meanwhile, Duluth, who actually passed a sales tax raise to pay for their share of the improvements to a 40 year old arena, doesn't get their share from the legislature to fund their arena, in part because they have to wait for St. Cloud to finish their spiel on why they shouldn't have to pay for the addition on their own  dime to the less than 20 year old arena the state built for them in the first place and gave them rent free, not to mention get all the receipts from.  Go to the back of the line!  Bemidji has more pressing needs than St. Cloud!
[/rant]

It's wonderful to talk about the two greatest sports in the world-- WCHA hockey and MIAC football.

I was going to mention Duluth because I agree that they should get an upgrade.  I am frustrated in general with how stadiums and arenas are funded.  I share your frustration with what goes on in St. Cloud (the city) in general, but I don't blame them for voting down the civic center tax increase.  Apparently the St. Cloud Times doesn't cover alll the angles to the NHC upgrade, which doesn't surprise me in the slightest, or I missed an article or two.  I actually don't see a good argument to upgrade the civic center right now, but I do see an argument to add seats to the NHC.  I won't pretend to know the best way to make that happen, but I do know that the narrow, overly simplistic view of the rural hicks that I live around and am one of is that we see a huge out pour of cash for a gopher staduim and based on how politics seem to work, we wonder if our local officials shouldn't be able to pull off something on a much smaller scale.  It would probably be an easier sell if SCSU would find a sponsor, like TCF for the Gophers, who would foot a big part of the bill, and then the request could be smaller.

Alright, I'm sick of all this hockey talk.

How good is Arlt?  He's got twice as many receptions as the other recievers.  Is he that good, or are the others bad?

And what's the deal with the Gustie d-line?  3 sacks all season?  Doesn't inspire a lot of fear in yoru apss rush.

Aw, Duff - trying to get some football discussion going over all the hockey talk?  Good luck.

Simply, and well stated j_esq. Whatever you have to dish out for the souvenir plastic cup tonight will be money well spent.  8)

On October 25 the Blue Jackets are having Hanson Brother (Slapshot) glasses night! That would be a fun souvenir! If Ohio were closer, I would so be there!! ;D

The biggest problem is that SCSU seems to expect the handouts happen without understanding the issues.  SCSU got a handout in the early 1990s to build the NHC, which was turned over to them for their own use and revenue generation (SJU pays rent to play there, I believe).  They got an additional $5M in the early 2000s to build a football stadium.  While the U of M has undoubtedly received more funds from the state for its operation, how much for sports?  Since about 1929, the state had given the main U pretty close to zero for athletic facilities.  The legislature wouldn't help fund a renovation of Memorial Stadium in the late 1970s.  The legislature did not build Mariucci or renovate Williams.  Those were funded by the U itself-- and we pay for it through ticket prices.  So the Gopher football stadium was about time it received a handout-- for 70 years it got nothing for its athletic facilities-- and will likely be used as much if not more than Husky Stadium is for community events such as Prep Bowl and High School playoffs.

Meanwhile, SCSU gets a handout after handout yet refuses to put up even the 50% funding that both the U of M and UMD are putting forth for their athletic facility needs-- instead, they will take on only about 15% of the $13M that the renovation would cost-- this on an arena that is the same age as the Target Center!  I look at it this way-- if SCSU wants to improve its profitability, they should be able to bond it themselves and cash flow it-- much like how the U of M built Mariucci and renovated Williams.  I don't have a problem building facilities in outstate areas, but I do when the same groups come back to the well every five years for another "need" without trying it alone first.

Ok, hockey over until the puck drops!

Arlt's the real deal big and fast with Elliot-like ability to go up and get it, not nearly as quick and shifty as Elliot was tho.  I would say the problem with the d-line is not being able to Shake and Bake ;D.  Seriously, tho there is some talent there (#80 has all the physical skills just doesn't trust his skills enough) but I think as a whole they may be too worried about the run and don't "pin their ears back" enough on passing downs.  Plus there are two first year starters in the middle one of whom has moved from LB to DE to DT this year and lacks some of the technique to get loose.

p.s. Take that political funding talk somewhere else, as I am quite sure  this is D3football.com.

Also, there are only bathrooms under the GAC stands and not that many urinals, so expect a back up if nature calls.  I'm hoping they put some port-o-johns near by.

Are there any large plants close by?

Yeah there is a whole arboreteum across the road, but for some reason Safety and Security does not approve any individual watering plans ???

Last night on the Thursday night SJU Football radio show something was muttered about Tom Stock trying to add lights in Collegeville.  Has anyone heard anything about this?  I guess I would prefer to keep things as they are.  Maybe more HS playoff games could be played there and that might help recruiting, and the Prep school could play night games, but I would like to keep all afternoon games for SJU.  Does anyone else have an opinion on this matter?

It was tossed around a while back, I believe, and the idea was nixed.  Maybe Redtooth has some info.  He used to be involved with that stuff.

Yeah, I would vote to keep day games, for sure!  They're much better and warmer ;D
