I will try not to ruin everyone's fun with Johnnie/Tommie week jokes, but where have all the STO supporters gone??

How does that chant go?

Makes sense, Bye week follows your team saying Bye to their slim hopes of winning the MIAC or making the playoffs.

Bye Week.

No, no, no KR...  "Bye Week" is the week they say bye to these boards .  I hear Bethel's Bye Week is coming up in about 15 days and will last all offseason.

Shoes- I wish I could give you some karma for that!  I am in full support of getting paid to do PP homework, and to color code it too that almost makes the 3-peat Stomping of my Gusties less painful.

Actually it doesn't help the pain but that is impressive :-\

Thanks, 'bake. Digging up those scores made me wish there was a searchable database of this stuff. Hm, maybe Pat should add a gigantohugeamungus searchable DB of scores to D3F. That'd be sweet.

We'll get there. Inputting scores from previous years is definitely on the list.

Ok...maybe I am way off base, but it seems to me that John Gagliardi is reaching another huge milestone....but I've seen no mention of it..here it is.....

By my count,  Eddie Robinson is (currently) the "most-games-coached" football coach in college football with 588 games coached.  [I added his wins, losses, & ties].

The next closest is John Gagliardi with 582 games coached [451 wins, 120 losses, and 11 ties].....If the Johnnies win out the regular season, and go deep into the playoffs, it seems to me that John will set that major milestone...

My question is this...Should I tell people how about this impending milestone, or would a surprise celebration after that game score point for me,  help my lovelife, and impress the ladies later that evening? ::)

Johnnie

Another question,

Does Coach Gagliardi hang stand around for game #600, sometime in 2008 or 2009?

OK, so I've been following some of this chatter about the SJU-UST mutual slam-fest lacking originality, and it occurred to me that perhaps the problem was inherent to the lack of originality of the team names.

Before you start chipping away at my so-far stellar karma-to-post ratio, I'll be the first to admit that the "Cobbers" while perhaps in the plus column for originality is completely nonsensical. If only "cob" were a verb...but I digress.

Anyhow, I took occasion to ponder the saints behind (over?) these schools to see if there could be any creative inspiration. Problem is, I found 29 "St. Johns" and 6 "St. Thomases" and I don't know to whom to attribute the name.

St. Thomas, I assume is from St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of schools/colleges. Wouldn't it be more fitting going into this weekend if it were the disciple Thomas? I mean, we have the Running Rebels and the Fighting Irish...how apt to have the DOUBTING TOMMIES!

On the Johnnie side it's more confusing. The man behind the burgers at Stiftungsfest would probably appreciate the team/school to be of St. John (San Juan) of Capistrano, the patron saint of judges.

Cobber fans (and add CC faithful this year) probably believe the Johnnies are named after St. John of God, the patron saint of heart patients and the sick >:(  This same saint is also for printers and booksellers, which could be a fitting nod to the team that introduced the MIAC to the $2.00 game program (yes, I'm cheap).

UST fans...here's your chance. Perhaps the Johnnies are named after St. John Berchmans, the patron saint of altar servers, or better yet, St. John Bosco, the patron saint of boys/youth. (Goodbye, Karma...nice knowing ya!)

What we need is a St. Sebastian University, for the patron saint of athletes. I can think of a fairly creative moniker.

Incidentally, St. Ben (Benedict) is the patron saint of poisoning ???

If his heart is still beating, whether on it's own or via artificial means, he will!
The only thing that will ever stop him from coaching is if The Almighty calls him home. Let's just hope heaven doesn't need a College Football coach/comedian just yet!

Good post! +k!

Actually, St. John's is named after St. John the Baptist, who was the patron saint of converts, among other things.

The irony is that St. John is the patron saint of hailstorms; St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint against storms.  Is there any other reason why we have such a rivalry?

By the way, monastics at St. John's are of the Order of St. Benedict, and are thus Benedictines. We're well aware of how Ben's monks tried to poison him...

By the way, congrats to UST for receiving the $60 million dollar donation, and congrats to Lee and Penny Anderson for donating it.  Neither Lee nor Penny are alumni of UST...

What I found interesting is this line:

The gift by Lee and Penny Anderson will be used for a new student center and improvements to athletic and recreational facilities.

Quaere whether they need more improvements to the athletic facilities at UST.

This is as a good a time as any to mention that, while good seats still remain, the Johnnie bandwagon is filling fast!

Cobber faithful, dejected Oles, the occasional rogue Auggie, Gustie, and Carlie--the time to pledge your temporary allegience is now!  Who isn't looking for another reason to root against St. Thomas and Bethel?  And face it, as much as you love your school, none of you have any chance of beating UW-Whitewater or Mount Union any time soon.

Added bonus:  As SJU's namesake, St. John the Baptist, welcomed converts with baptism by holy water, we welcome converts with the next best thing--Hamm's!
