You can fair catch a kickoff, so I don't think the live ball clause would impact anything.

That said, I didn't realize a free kick was live either. I guess the Tommies having a horses*** punter worked to their advantage. Who knew?
Nice day, huh?

Pat, assuming Bethel beats the Auggies at the dome Friday, and the Johnnies at home Nov 10th, any ideas on if they would have to travel with one loss, or if their is a Johnnie loss, does this automatically elimate them from the playoff picture?

As an extension to the Free Kick discussion - At the UWW/UMHB game, the initial kickoff went over the heads/between the two receivers,. They watched it and walked away. The ball barely dribbled out of the endzone, but I believe that was a live ball that could have been recovered by UWW for a TD, had they gotten to it before it went out the back. I posted this on the WIAC board, but nobody there touched it. They're too busy looking forward to a rematch with MUC in Salem, I guess.

That was my thought, too :D

In fact, I thought it was a genius move by Roney. :o

Maybe the powers that be at USTD were impressed enough with the game that they will decide to keep Roney.  ;D

It is for sure a live ball and would have been a WW touchdown if recovered in the endzone. I saw that also, and thought MHB played it pretty casually.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

So the World Series is over!  That's all folks.  It was kind of a lame series no 9th inning or any inning dramatics except for the sox scoring in every innning.  Oh well.

I agree. Last night's game was an OK game, but you knew it was going to be over for the Rox. I was watching, while sort of wishing there was a hockey game on or something. :o

BDB

We've got ourselves a MIAC vs WIAC hockey showdown here in Menomonie tomorrow night.

The Blue Devils will fear the ear against the Cobbers on the ice.

Cobbernation, come on over!  ::)

I thought that in college, a ball just has to enter the end zone and it's a touchback.

Edit: that's only on punts. Stupid Shoes.

Maybe in the NFL, not so in high school or college.

It is a live ball in the end zone only in the NFL. In college, the ball should be blown dead for a touchback once it is in the end zone as long as it hasn't been touched.

Good to see everyone this weekend.  The Calif entourage enjoyed the scense immensely - for the second visit in a row (the folks who flew in for the Ole game are thinking of coming back for a game next year!).

As for the football game, I really didn't see any of it.  I was too busy flipping through my program to see if I won a free pizza.  I mean, is it possible to squeeze any more gdamn ads into a game. :P :-[ >:( :P  I wonder if Keith has ever heard more elsewhere. ???  What an embarrassment. :-[

Talk about "star power" - Fins shows up to a completely packed parking lot and has no place to park so the SJU alumni director moves his car so Fins can park!  (Of course, I would have been really impressed if the development director had moved his car for Fins).  Gotta wonder what Fins has on the guy. ;D ::)

I thought if you called a fair catch on even a kick-off, the defenders could not hit the receiver. For example, if an on-side attempt is a kick very short, but high in the air, the receiving team can all a fair catch. So, I thought John had a valid argument. But, I did not realize it was a live ball-never seen that before, a terrible punt after a saftey, and kick team recovering.
The receiving team can call for a fair catch but it is a live ball if he doesn't make the catch. As a matter of fact, if a receiver makes the fair catch, the receiving team can elect to try a field goal from a free kick position w/o allowing the opposing team trying to block the kick. It is very seldom used and almost always at the end of the half or game. The last time I know of it happening, Paul Hornung kicked a FG for the Packers so it was a long time ago. The call is usually made on a punt. I could be wrong but I think the rule applies to a free kick after a safety.

On second thought, maybe you can't make a fair catch on a free kick as it is a live ball.

A free kick actually happened in a Minny high school game this season -- and determined the outcome. In fact, the opposing coach called timeout just before the kicker missed. They gave him the TO and the kid made it on his 2nd try -- as time ran out to win the game.
