As an extension to the Free Kick discussion - At the UWW/UMHB game, the initial kickoff went over the heads/between the two receivers,. They watched it and walked away. The ball barely dribbled out of the endzone, but I believe that was a live ball that could have been recovered by UWW for a TD, had they gotten to it before it went out the back. I posted this on the WIAC board, but nobody there touched it. They're too busy looking forward to a rematch with MUC in Salem, I guess.

I believe the college rule is: if the ball is not touched and goes into the endzone on the fly, it is a dead ball and automatic touch-back.  Unlike the NFL, the ball is not immediately live in the endzone - if it hits the endzone on the fly, it is immediately dead.  It is somewhat unclear if this ball bounced in play and then into the endzone, or if it went directly into the endzone without touching elsewhere in the field of play.
Out of order, I'll show you out of order! You don't know what out of order is, Mr Task! I'd show you but I'm too old, I'm too tired, and I'm too f----n blind. If I were the man I was 5 years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to this place. Out of order, who the hell do you think you're talking to?

I thought if you called a fair catch on even a kick-off, the defenders could not hit the receiver. For example, if an on-side attempt is a kick very short, but high in the air, the receiving team can all a fair catch. So, I thought John had a valid argument. But, I did not realize it was a live ball-never seen that before, a terrible punt after a saftey, and kick team recovering.
The receiving team can call for a fair catch but it is a live ball if he doesn't make the catch. As a matter of fact, if a receiver makes the fair catch, the receiving team can elect to try a field goal from a free kick position w/o allowing the opposing team trying to block the kick. It is very seldom used and almost always at the end of the half or game. The last time I know of it happening, Paul Hornung kicked a FG for the Packers so it was a long time ago. The call is usually made on a punt. I could be wrong but I think the rule applies to a free kick after a safety.

On second thought, maybe you can't make a fair catch on a free kick as it is a live ball.

A freekick after a safety is a live ball just like a kick-off is.  The fair catch can be called for by the receiving team and a fair opportunity must be given by the covering team.  A common example of this is an on-side kick that doesn't bounce first.  Many teams a few years back tried to take advantage of a very short kick just behind the front line of 5 blockers.  However, ST coaches of the receiving teams soon realized/discovered that all they needed to do was to have the TE/LB type that is usually closest to this area call for a fair catch and this type of on-side kick is defeated.  That is why kickers have now gone to the "one giant bounce" kick where the ball is immediately kicked into the ground with a great deal of force causing it to take one huge bounce up into the air.  Because the ball has already contacted the ground, no fair-catch can be called for.

Further, the free kick after a fair catch is truly a free kick.  The defense must remain 10 yards back at the time of the kick.  There is no snap and the ball is placed right at the spot that the fair catch was made.  This allows the kicker to get a full run-up - no rush, therefore, no hurried kick- and so much longer kicks are feasible.  No snap is even required.  The kicking team can either use this method or a drop kick (thank you Doug Flutie!)

So true KR. Makes baseball playoffs a lot less fun to watch.  Does anyone think MLB will ever wise up and get a salary cap?

Not until the BoSox or Spankees win 4-5 in a row in dominant fashion.

So long as they keep alternating with guest spots by other $100million+ teams as World Series champs, Selig will claim parity and nothing will change.
If MLB did have a salary cap, whoever signs A-rod wouldn't have room under the cap to have anyone else on the team!

KR: Ran into Mr. Super Bowl commercial at the La Playette.  He is doing well and just recently moved back to the Twin Cities.  Which reminds me, Mark Zimmer has really upgraded the La.  Really seems much cleaner with big HDTVs and he finally hired plenty of attractive Bennies.

Outstanding, hope to catch up to him soon over a bud light and a fist bump :)
The La has always had attractive ladies, they just used to be attractive in terms of their gravitational pull  ;D

Duff and anyone else who ever took physics should appreciate that cerebral joke!

Fins,
I am so proud of you, times like this I wonder if you and I aren't somehow related. From this point forward, I will refer to you as my 2nd cousin.

I am a little shocked at the number of players for Millsaps that just gave up on the play.  They stopped pursuing the football.  If I was Mike DuBose I would make every player on the field during that play apologize to their team and earn their spot back.  That is of course if I let them return to the team.  I hate players who give up on the field.

Could you tell from the You Tube video if this guy gave up?

What he wasn't kind enough to do was help polish off the pitcher at the La.

You went drinking at the La after Brother Willie's?  Holy sh!te! :o  You are a character, TC.  TDT was your ride home and you're complaining that he didn't help you polish off a pitcher just before jumping in the car for the final lap?  No wonder you're interested in what people do with their free time - you're trying to figure out what you'll do when you wind up in the hospital (best case scenario)! ::)

Olefan,

If your team didn't consistantly lead the MIAC in late hits (post whistle sh1t) your comments about quitting on a play might hold more weight......

What amazes me after watching the play again is that the officiating crew didn't blow the whistle, call any of the laterals forward passes or declare ineligible players down field/touching.

Redtooth:  I don't play on or coach the team.  I have consistently complained about the penalties committed by Olaf, but that doesn't change the fact that they are my team.  It is one thing to hustle and have the oops penalty, but it seems like the Oles are getting more flags for stuff on dead balls between plays.  That is unacceptable, and it needs to stop.

ROR: What is with your obsession about mascots?  It is starting to get a little old.

I am here to discuss football with some intelligent people.  Can we move back to the football discussion?

Some questions for this week:
Can Augsburg beat Bethel?  I know most people will say no, but the Metrodome seems to be an equalizer on some levels.  Augsburg has a passing attack that can put points on the board.
How will St. Olaf do against Carleton?  I think Ramler is a very good coach, and I would not be shocked to see him come up with a good game plan for this game.  I have met him a few times, and I always leave with a good impression.  I think most of the Johnnies that know him would agree with me.  Most of my fellow Oles don't want to think about losing the Cereal Bowl, but I know it is a strong possibility.
Does anyone have a desire to see the pillow fight at St. Thomas this week?

Spelling corrected.

Olefan,

If that is how you feel, I commend you for agreeing with 95% of the people here that point out the fact that St. Olaf has either chosen to either ignore the whistle or recruited a bunch of deaf kids ;D  Kudos to you

On the ineligible players down field question, didn't the initial forward pass completion eliminate that penalty so they were free to lateral to their hearts' content?  After that completion the linemen are eligible to run anywhere they like, no?
