Wow.  What happened to Carleton?  Way to go Cobbs setting records (Swingdorf, Johnson-big offense! Strother in sacks ect.) on a forgotten season by everyone in the MIAC.  The Fargo Forum even calling Jesse Nelson "Shumacher-esque".. best of luck SJU, STO, and Bethel in getting bids in the NCAA this year.  See you in 2008..

Oops, I better talk football before Duff's head explodes...how about the Purple Jesus, huh? WOW. I'm starting to think that nickname is insufficient. How about "Jesus Himself"?

The Raiders were up 50 - 0. Michaeli (sp?) was still in the game slinging until the end of the third quarter. Kmic, however, was not playing.

I think part of this is the fact that it is late in the season and Kehres is struggling to get his starters game time experience.  Seriously, when you're outscoring opponents like MUC is, your starters are only playing half games.  Once it gets later in the season, you have to get your players used to playing a full game or they'll be totally untested in the 4th quarter when you get into a real game.

A tradition unrivaled...

Of course the Vikings won yesterday.  LaDanian Tomlinson is just one man, while Adrian Peterson is like a mix between LaDanian Tomlinson, Barry Sanders, and Blake Elliott.  You just can't stop that.

I am not sure about the forum calling nelson "shumacher esq" only because I don't know if we will ever see anyone win 2 MIAC MVP awards again.  Although the last half of the season nelson looked great and I am excited to see how the cobbers will do next season.  The only spot they will have to revamp is O-Line as it was anchored by 4 seniors.

Janesvilleflash, thanks for the picture of Paris. Good way to start off the week. ;)

Well, where should we host the Stiftungsfestivities this Saturday at Royaland? By the stadium entrance parking lot or the lot off of Snelling Avenue? Freebird and others, advice is needed.

Sounds like I should have gone over to Carleton Saturday for the game. I was at St. Olaf for the state high school cross-country meet. Always great to see your old high school coach from 37 years ago who is still coaching. Johnnie coach Tim Miles, my former teammate, was also there. The regional and national meets for Division III are being hosted by St. Olaf this fall.

The best way to prevent a blow out is to stop the other team from scoring.  Why do we always blame the team that scores, why not blame the team giving up all the points?  Perhaps they gave up and stopped caring etc?   Are substitutes that come in for  starters not supposed to try to score?  That's against human nature, especially if you don't get that many opportunities to play.  If you get beat you get beat.  If you get beat by a lot perhaps the best way to prevent it from happening again is to point fingers at yourself and your program.  What did we do wrong, how can we improve? If getting beat by a lot hurts so much that you just can't move on from it, then maybe athletic completion really isn't for you.   Try the library.

I have no problem with backups playing hard and trying to score and the score being run up that way, but Meidt is just an arrogant classless asshole.  He has been that way in multiple venues and interactions I've personally had with him as well as other first hand accounts I've heard of (even a couple from former oles).  Not going to get into specifics on here but he has proven it on every occasion so far so I was not suprised in the least at him running up the score, in fact I expected it and left the game at the end of the 3rd when it was already a forgone conclusion.  Leadership is reflected in teams and there is a reason all the former players on here talk about Bethel's cheapness during his tenure there, and there is a reason his current team seams to be extraordinarily cheap as can be seen in their infatuation with person fouls towards the ends of games.  It is what it is, the Carleton players just have to store it away for motivation in the offseason and try to do something about it next year, and the Meidter is still a d-bag, life moves on.

A few pages back, skunks sidekick posted about the classy Larry Kehres, and how he handles blowouts at Mt Union. I happened to catch some of the Mt Union/James Carroll game from yesterday. The Raiders were up 50 - 0. Michaeli (sp?) was still in the game slinging until the end of the third quarter. Kmic, however, was not playing. Then in the fourth, they bring in the backup, who, to me at least, looked as good as the starter. I don't know about the other positions or the "D" as the announcers weren't all that helpful in identifying players other than the skill positions. The final, I believe was 53 - 0, so there didn't appear to be an effort to run up the score, but I did find it curious that the starting QB was left in so late with that big of a lead. I don't know what others will make of this, and I've always heard that Kehres doesn't try to run it up.............

TC - I saw the Gophers today, and also marveled at the fact that losing your top three defensemen can have such a profound effect on your ability to score. They just seem to be out of sync this year. Let's hope they can get it together. They appear to have the talent.

Mea Culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. JOHN Carroll, JOHN Carroll, I will do penance for a month after making such an egregious error!

I wasn't AT the game, I saw part of the third, and all of the fourth quarter on TV, I wasn't even casting aspersions, just adding to the fodder of discussion here on how to handle blowouts. Thy skin is rather thin my man!

Quick question for some of the Vets...

Does St. Olaf have an outside chance of getting a bid to the Tourney?? What has to happen if so?
Um YA YA!

Lots of other teams would have to lose, and some MIAC team other than SJU or BU need to be ranked in the region (because Luther is at best 6-4 after this week, and are not anywhere near being regionally ranked).  As it stands right now, if BU loses to SJU yet holds on to the regional rankings, STO is still 0-2 against regionally ranked teams-- which won't win them any tiebreakers.  At best they'd be 0-1 against regional ranked opponents.  Still not enough to push them over the hump of other 2-loss teams.

Short answer?  It's mathematically possible, but so darn unlikely that it's not even on the radar.
SJU Champions 2003 NCAA D3, 1976 NCAA D3, 1965 NAIA, 1963 NAIA; SJU 2nd Place 2000 NCAA D3; SJU MIAC Champions 2018, 2014, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1999, 1998, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993, 1991, 1989, 1985, 1982, 1979, 1977, 1976, 1975, 1974, 1971, 1965, 1963, 1962, 1953, 1938, 1936, 1935, 1932

Well Retagent.....I had to check and see if your observation was a dig (Johnnie fans and non-Mount fans in general seem to do that on occasion) or the truth.

I went to the bible of MUC football (Ric's website), and it seems that Micheli DID throw two (2) passes with about 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, and Mount up 50-0.  However......all the skilled position players OTHER than Micheli were out of the game.  Not sure why he was still in, but they soon remedied that by putting in the #2 QB, who then threw two (2) passes himself in the 4th quarter.

I will state for the record that it seems there is no love lost between John Carrol's head coach and LK.  So who knows if it was just some "extra practice" for Micheli......or a little zap by LK.

Either way.....keep up the season SJU.......the dream is still alive!   ;)

If Bethel beats SJU, I can't see any way for Olaf to get in. Both BU and SJU will be 9-1 overall and should both get playoff bids. The odds of the NCAA giving the MIAC three bids are off the charts.

If SJU beats Bethel, that leaves both BU and STO at 8-2 (assuming an STO win against UST). At that point, considering the strength of the West Region, the NCAA is going to have a hard time putting a two-loss team in the playoffs. Bethel's loss against BV would keep them out and STO's losses to both the MIAC schools ahead of them would likely keep them out.

I don't see it happening unless all sorts of crazy s*** goes on this Saturday—crazy s*** I admittedly haven't researched one bit.
Nice day, huh?
