Because it was interesting to see whether or not a rule was interpreted correctly by the officials the first time or after they changed their minds upon talking to John? Given the ambiguity of the situation, the fact that the officials actually made a change after talking to a coach, and the fact that days later we still can't figure out for sure if they did it right, it's a pretty damn interesting discussion, IMO.

Then again, it doesn't directly address the greatness of BU (or SJU, for that matter), so I can see why it might be a boring topic at this point. ::)
Nice day, huh?

Quote from: VOJ on November 12, 2007, 01:00:03 PMVeek, the officials blew the blocked FG call...J's should have had the ball on the 4

I would have to agree. The rule book is here. The field goal section in its entirety looks like this:
QuoteSECTION 4. Field Goal
Next Play—ARTICLE 2
Approved Ruling 8-4-2

VI. Fourth and eight on Team B's 40-yard line. Team A's field goal attempt is blocked or touched at the line of scrimmage and goes out of bounds, untouched beyond the neutral zone, at Team B's 25-yard line. RULING: Team B's ball at Team B's 40-yard line.

Why doesn't this apply?  The Johnnie coaches, I believe, were arguing that the ball was touched at the line of scrimmage, then downed beyond the neutral zone.  The Johnnie defender did not advance the ball (see the box score), so it should be brought back as is the same as the example.  Had BU recovered the blocked field goal it wasn't going to be their ball first and ten, for example.  And why do you penalize a team for blocking a field goal, then having to deal with the consequences as to where the ball ends up?

The mistake, then, was that the ball should have been reset to the 12, which was the line of scrimmage before the kick, and not the 4; nor to the 20.

having read all the comments, i have to agree with johnnie_esq that the ball should have been reset to the 12 yard line....

But what about Pat Coleman?  What is your take?????  thanks,

Johnnie

Appreciate you thinking of me but I'd have to see the play before commenting.

No worries...I agree it was interesting.  I was shocked when they changed their ruling.

Tmert-you going to be at SJU this weekend? And this is the weekend for the double win, unlike last weekend.

I hate to miss any of the games, but I'm not sure if we're gonna be out again this year - maybe if we host a regional final.  Anyway, I'm gonna have to let the folks from the south handle representing the state this week.  Gotta save up for next season when #2 is healthy again.

Feeble excuse. And you give me crap for hunting?

MIAC AWARDS - could be another Bethel sweep!!

MVP - Wetzel (perhaps Penz?)
Stamm - Tommy Davis - leader of a dominating Bethel O-line
COTY - Johnson (Meidt didn't earn too much respect this year, but perhaps Horan with the nice job he did up at Concordia)

Back at work today and none of my co-workers here in Sioux Falls, SD can believe there were 10k at a D3 game in St. Paul on Saturday - great game and atmosphere.

Also, great looking waitresses at Old Chicago after the game!!

I will give you Wetzel for the MVP...they won the conference and he is a big reason why...
Can the Stamm go to a D lineman?  IF so...Gunderson is twice the guy Davis is...you have to game plan for the All-American, no one game plans for an O lineman who holds alot

Coach of the year should go to Johnson, he had to replace alot...although Horan did a great job after a tough start...Bethel fans should be happy they are playing Concordia Wi...they might lose to Concordia Mn

VOJ

By the way to clear up the blocked FG...it was Jerry Haugen who was making the argument about where the ball should be placed...not John, so all you Bethel fans who think that John intimidated the officials or used some jedi mind-trick can just move on...

What?  Offensive Lineman hold?  Never? ;)

The Stam went to a D-lineman last year...so, I don't see why Gunderson couldn't win it.  He is definitely a great player.  If I had a vote, I would vote for Tommy Davis.  He is a Stud!!

This begs the question as to whether or not either Concordia or Bethel would have gotten in had Cord beaten Bethel in the 3OT game earlier this year.

Either way - somewhat disapointing year for the Cobbs, so close to 9-1 and another playoff shot.  Its nice to see after the year they had last year, but still disapointing to lose 2 games by 3 points.

Good luck Johnnies and Royals - it would be nice to see a rematch
To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.

I know.  But by extension, what is the difference if it goes out of bounds or if BU recovers it?  Then, what if SJU just falls on it?  Seems to me they all are the same situation. So I think this controls.

But even then, they screwed up since the ball should have been on the 12 by that ruling...unless I am missing something else here.
This should tie up the remaining loose ends.

Spot Where Kick Ends
ARTICLE 9. A scrimmage kick that crosses the neutral zone ends at the spot
where possession is gained or regained or the ball is declared dead by rule.
Exceptions:
1. When a kick ends in Team B's end zone, the postscrimmage kick spot
is Team B's 20-yard line.
2. On an unsuccessful field goal attempt that has crossed the neutral
zone and is untouched by Team B after crossing the neutral zone and
declared dead beyond the neutral zone, the postscrimmage kick spot
is the previous spot. If the previous spot is between Team B's 20-yard
line and the goal line, and the unsuccessful field goal attempt that has
crossed the neutral zone and is untouched by Team B after crossing
the neutral zone, and is declared dead beyond the neutral zone, the
spot where the kick ends is the 20-yard line
(A.R. 10-2-2-XXV).
3. When Rule 6-3-11 is in effect, the postscrimmage kick spot is the
20-yard line.

Keeping in mind that the neutral zone on a kick extends past the line of scrimmage (3 yards past I beleive) and also the play can be determined to be dead before there is any touch or possesion.
