Pat Coleman

My ESPN sources tell me they've been wanting to hit a small-college game for a while but it had to be on a weekend where there were no games in D-I where there were national-level implications for both teams.

I've also been told they'd be willing to do it again, hit a non-Division I game.

Freebird's sources may vary but remember that we had quotes from Chris Fowler on the subject.

I was under the impression from listening to talk radio that ESPN got a lot of flak for that Gameday-Pat-do you know whether they received more positive than negative responses?

Mr. Coleman,

What in your opinion is the best team you've seen in all of your travels over the years?  I would assume its a team from Mount Union?  Their squad this year I would certainly think has the potential to be the best?

Pat Coleman

It'd be hard to separate the two or three best Mount Union teams from each other ... maybe some other day?

I hear they got a lot of flak from D-I fans but I'm not sure that means a whole lot. The rating was in line with other Game Day broadcasts and that's gotta mean a lot there, I'd think.

Pat,

Your sources are pretty consistent with what I was told.

I would love to see another D3 game on but I personally think it will be a while.

Perhaps inaccurate and only rumor but someone mentioned to me Gameday requested the Johnnie campus but were turned down.

Pat you know best about this I am sure.  The little I know though is its all about the ratings as they translate into $ so if there is no hit on the ratings I am sure that they would be up for it again.  Do you know if the ratings differ that much from place to place.  The shows content is all national anyway so does where it comes from have that huge of an difference on the ratings?

On the GameDay issue; we (SJU) approached them prior to and during the 2003 season to do the game from Collegeville vs Bethel.....all the marbles+John breaking Eddie Robinson's record with a win.  At the time they had yet to do a game away from DI and most schools were paying big bucks to be considered.  To say they were less than interested might be too strong.  Home Depot also plays a role in this decision that should not be underestimated.

If I were to guess; the chances of another DIII school getting a shot prior to DIAA/FCS or DII is slim.  Lots of those schools burned the ESPN lines from what I heard.

Last time a MIAC school not named SJU played for the region championship was 1997- Augsburg.....got stomped by Simpson.  Prior to that UST (when they were CST) lost to Central in 1990.

Congratulations to Central on the win Saturday.....one caution however; on the issue of IIAC dominance I hardly think TWO West Region championships in the last 18 years makes you the beast in the region.....one of those by Simpson ;)

West Region Champions 1989-2006
89- SJU beat Central
90- Central beat CST
91- SJU beat UWLX
92- UWLX beat Central
93- SJU beat UWLX
94- SJU beat Wartburg
95- UWLX beat Simpson
96- UWLX beat SJU
97- Simpson beat Augsburg
98- UWEC beat SJU
99- PLU beat SJU
00- SJU beat Central
01- SJU beat PLU
02- SJU beat Linfield
03- SJU beat Linfield
04- Linfield beat Oxy
05- UWWW beat Linfield
06- UWWW beat SJU

SJU- has played for the title 12 times in the last 18 years, winning 8 times.  Next closest UWLX with 3 titles, the last one being in 1996.

TDT,

Can you please give all of us the scoop on when John Jr. will start moving his stuff into his old man's office for the impending take over?  Looking forward to the Gagliardi "Version 2.0" era of Johnnie football.

John Jr has never been a football coach. He was a solid QB in his day. His kid brother (Jim I think is his name) was a decent WR in his day too. :)

Maybe we can shoot for five years from now when John will be gunning for his 500th win.  Course with all the advances in technology by then he will probably be coaching from his living room and we won't know for sure if it's him of some computer program that's running. ;)

I believe 2000 would be the correct answer.  For us SJU beat us that year to win the region.  SJU has kind of had a hold on the region over the last 15 years anyway.

ROR,

Those were some great pictures you posted from the game on Saturday. I enjoyed looking at them.  Central's new field looks good, too.

I have a question for you SJU guys. There was a photo of a fan wearing a nice cardinal and blue jacket and I know that those are your colors, but do you use the blue anymore? It seems that your unis are always red and white.

Two words:  THE STREAK

Redtooth

DutchFan,

See above for the correct answer to the regional question.

The football team doesn't use the blue, but the rest of the sports teams do.
Nice day, huh?
