Tons of reading...Yes TWS could take Willy Wonka on a first step, second or third step...thirdly and fourthly I can't wait for Saturday's game...Central wins ugly as has the Bethel team this season...It is my belief the eight best teams remain and the NCAA selection committee finally seeded the west region with its' due respect.

I have one question for you guys, and I dont mean any offense by it but does John G do anything? I.E. during games, after and such. He stood away from the action most of the game Saturday and after the game he was on our sideline walking alone, not with his team.

Just wondering what his official function was besides figurehead for the program.

Amazingly, you're the first person to ever raise this point.  You think it would be more common with old man stereotypes and all.

You hit the nail on the head, though.  Gagliardi Sr does nothing for the program.  Actually, the administration doesn't even pay him.  SJU has managed to have the success it has by diverting all his salary into bribes for rival teams who slavishly take the money and spent it on corn chips and Wii games.  Central, for some crazy reason, turned down the cash this year so the Johnnies spent it on an all night Al Pacino film fest.  That's why their play lacked luster.  They were spending too much time walking bleary-eyed on the sidelines trying to say, "You f*#$ing cock-a-roach!" in their meanest Cuban accent.

Im going to go out on a limb here and guess that was mainly sarcasm...haha. He made SJU what it is today, Im not questioning that. I too agree that when Im his age I hope I can stand and coach football...that would be amazing. Didnt want you to get all defensive with me!

The first two playoff games havent been ugly...as far as winning for the Dutch is concerned!

DutchHawk,

You should have seen him after the Cheese League officials in Round 1 ....

But others here can offer more detail. Can't imagine even standing that long when (if) I'm his age.

Ive heard the officials were quite questionable in that game. Thought the CCIW crew did a fair job on Saturday though.

Yeah, we understand what he means to the program but during the games is he doing much coaching? As Dutchhawk and I were noticing on Saturday, he seems to be away from the action a lot of the times. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I've had a chance to see his teams play the last two years. He truly is a legend and all of us Central fans know that but is his role coaching still the same?

Not sure what you guys are looking for. Most all teams have defensive and offensive coaches. They and the head coach game plan during the week and play on Sat. The head coach watches the game and bitches at the refs. At half time he gives a pep talk, and that's about it.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

Yes, his role has changed greatly in the past 55 years. John no longer has to wash the player's uniforms or chalk the field and yea, he is the only active coach in the College Football Hall of Fame. I think that pretty much sums it up.

As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Maybe it's because I'm a bitter Johnnie fan coming to grips with an earlier-than-expected offseason, but I'm rooting for both the Royals and Dutch to lose this week and if one of the teams has to go to Ohio I hope Mount Union hangs 100 on them.

Whew, glad I got that off my chest.  The game was no fun.  The weather sucked.  The trip down was bad, the trip back was worse.  All in all, it was a pretty good time.

The Dutch were nothing like I expected them to be.  I thought their secondary played a great game.  I thought ours left a lot to be desired, but the Central receivers also made some ridiculous plays.  I mentioned to a few people at the half that Alex Kofoed had an opportunity to come out and play a flawless second half, lead the team to a big comeback win, and cement his legacy.  None of those things happened.

I really don't want to make this sound like a shot at the players because they're kids that are trying their hardest, and we all enjoy watching them play, but it will be nice to get a breath of fresh air into the program.  Boyle, Hansel, Crees...  Who knows.  I just hope there's a QB somewhere in that mix.

The defensive lapses in the secondary this year were so uncharacteristic of the program--St. Olaf, St. Thomas, Central...  yuck.  I wonder what Augsburg and Gustavus would have done against the Johnnies'  pass defense at the end of the year after seeing the blueprint.

How's about some positives?  The Johnnie Faithful were out in force (even if it was the usual quiet crowd that we've come to expect), more than filling the stands on the visiting side.  No one can say we don't support our team.

Congrats to Alex Kofoed (100 career TD passes) and Brian Weber (1,000 receiving yards for the season) for passing some very impressive personal milestones.

This year's seniors--who started their SJU careers mostly watching a disappointing 7-3 season from the sidelines--finish with a 4-year record of 39-8 and 3 straight playoff appearances.  That may not open many eyes at St. John's but they are still carrying on the tradition.  Kofoed, Weber, Salvato and the rest will all be missed.  I'm sure the seniors didn't picture their last moments of football to be sucking hind tit in a 30-point blowout in Nowhere, IA, but at least they were all out there together.

Now it's time to find out who the next batch of stars is going to be.

Sorry Central fans.  Even I have to cheer for Bethel this weekend.  MIAC needs to stick together.  I sure wish we could have gotten another shot at them.   I reiterate that whichever team wins will probably not beat MUC.  In 2003, MUC did write off the Johnnies but the Johnnies had an oustanding team that year.  MUC had a great team too but I don't think they were as good as Linfield that year.  MUC was so used to pounding people 50 to 0 that they did not know what to do in a close game.  Bethel and Central are both good but I think the MUC team is unbeatable ..... again.  I hope I'm wrong and I hope someone takes them down but I tend to doubt it.

I was wondering if Bethel is a very religious school? Are they in the Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson vein? Or more like Jesus style?

Hey Bethel fans, what's your pick? I say you get 300 yards rushing, Dutch get 30 points and the win.

Stir the pot all you'd like, OD, but you've gotta understand that these players didn't come to St. John's to see their careers unceremoniously end in Pella, Iowa.

My Lutheran, overly nice upbringing prevents me from adequately answering this question ;) :D Someone else will have to enjoy doing so.
Nice day, huh?

Quick, let me ask the next question from gloating Dutchmen before they weary themselves typing with numbing predictability:

So, do you think Gagliardi will retire this year?  I mean he's old.  How much longer can he go on?  Sure the guy has a great record and all, but he's a figurehead on the sidelines.  Too old to think.  Heck, he's probably too old to chew his own Cornflakes in the morning.  I mean really, how much longer can he go on?

And I'll answer for us:  Forever.  Until he stops.  Odds are he'll retire before I die, but maybe not.

Well, actually, they let Bowden and Paterno in, so now John is one of 3 active coaches - but he was the first and is the one with the most wins.

Thanks, tmerts, for the k.  Triple digits.  Now, I wonder which low-life IIAC, WIAC, BU or STO supporter will knock me back down...
