but unbeaten is unbeaten and that's gotta count for something, no matter who you play.

Perhaps the single dumbest statement I've read on the board this year.  I can't wait for Northwestern (D3) to go undefeated ...

Regardless of the reason, UH's schedule was at the weakest (or within 1 or 2 places) in D1 this year.

June Jones is also perhaps the most classless coach I've seen this year.  After escaping from San Jose State with a last minute win (and lucky to get it), he blamed it on the rain and the field conditions and said Hawaii should rightfully have won by 60 points.  Uh, coach, both teams played in the same rain on the same field.  Hawaii has some nice talent and a great system - and I wouldn't want to play them in HI - but develop just a little modesty coach.  It might become you.  (In contrast, Dick Tomey, the SJS coach - who also happens to be a former UH coach - is one of the good guys in D1 [and there aren't many of them].)

Thanks to all for the kind words and prayers.I am doing OK considering it has only been a week.

I can not believe I am relegated to a casual observer for this game. With all my MIAC friends and Johnnie backers specifically I hope the Raiders can give a little "Alliance HOSPITALITY' to the Bethel faithful '93style. Let the water begin.LOL! I have my scouting report filed from the ST JOHNS GAME and I am sure the Raiders will give a good accounting of themselves.

Priceless!  Welcome Back.

All the ideas on a D1 playoff have merit, although I can't see anything approaching what is done in the other divisions because of logistics.

These are big time events with thousands of fans, students, players, the band, cheerleaders and bigwigs making the trip.  The Fiesta Bowl a few years between Ohio State and Miami is a good example.  OSU has a huge following and Miami much smaller and that year not as fired up.  About 80% of the crowd was OSU.  Much more than allocated tickets.  They had weeks to find tickets, arrange travel and find lodging.  We got our tickets from a Miami alum who didn't want to make the trip and sold for face value.  Took over a week to work out the purchase and transfer.

Now what happens in the scenario where Hawaii plays Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, with the winner moving on to the semi finals one week later and then on to a championship game one or two weeks later.  If OSU wins out 40,000+ people have to work all these logistics out twice in a two - three week period.  What if Hawaii wins.  Will they have more than 10,000 fans travelling, less than 5,000.  How do the airlines, restaurants, car rentals, hotels and police deal with this large a discrepency between potential visitor numbers with such short notice?

I'm sure where there's a will there's a way, but on the other hand, with so little time between games there's also a good chance these games could end up like most of the early bowls, made for TV with thousands of empty seats in the stadium.

Also, the big difference between March Madness is that the first round games are mostly lightly attended by team fans but usually fill up because of local interest and the fact there are eight teams involved.  More travel to the regionals because they're a bigger deal, but still heavily attended by locals.  The final four has an allure well beyond the teams, so someone who bought tickets and made travel arrangements weeks ago and had their team get beat are still likely to attend.

Wish something could be worked out, but the less teams involved and the less extra games the most likely, I think.

This is why at least the first round should be home games for the higher seeds.  It eliminates the travel logistic and rewards teams that play in tougher conferences with an extra home game.

That would help but still some logistic problems, weather issues etc.  Suspect would have half full stadiums at some sites.  Look at the fall off in attendance for the first round in D3.

An approach that might work would be to let four of the earliest bowls bid each year to host the first round in a field of eight.  These would have to be played late second and early third week in December.  Then the four winners would go to two of the BCS bowls Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta on a rotating basis. Then the winners would play in a mega national championship game the weekend before the Superbowl.  Still think the BCS bowls would not be very happy not knowing their teams until two weeks before their games.

Four teams would play one more game than normal and two would play two extra games.  You can also work any undefeated teams into this mix.  Plus this approach does not add a single additional game to the holiday mix.  It just pushes the championship game back two weeks.

And one other side benefit would be that it would knock eight of these 6-5 teams out of the bowl picture because there would no longer be as many early bowls for them.

Steve Johnson on PA & Dubay today.  Dubay and Justin Gaard are breaking down SJU/MUC 2003 as I type this.

Gaard:  "I don't know why I was cheering for St. John's but I was really sweating them."

Dubay:  "I'm not a great Division III football mind, but Bethel better really pack a lunch if they're playing Mount Union."

Um, have you paid attention to the news any time in the past, oh, 24 months or so?

Multitasking, for me at least, requires listening to the radio and relaying its reports to the internet.
