Why do you think I moved to Chicago!   :o

You got tired of having 20 flies land in your beer every time you put it down? :D

My wife is from Nebraska, so I have to stand up for the state (home of Arbor Day - for good reason).

Flies in my beer in Iowa?  No that would be my yearly vacation to Longville, MN.  The flies are the size of bald eagles.  My family has been on the lake up there for the same two weeks for the past 65 years, and we still can not get over the horse flies.  Love the land, lake, and senery, could do with out the insects.

I figured NE might be neutral, but I guess not ;D

Ah, Longville.  We would pass through there once in a great while on our way to my grandparent's farm in Pine River, where my dad grew up, on our way from Grand Rapids.  Although a bit longer, we usually went through Emily as the Longville road is too curvy.

And once in a while we would go north through Hackensack and Walker.  I remember when I was a youngin' that there was a black bear at the general store in Hackensack (but it may have been Backus - foggy memory and they are pretty close together) that you could buy a soda for.  The bear would lie on his back and hold the bottle with all four paws as he drank.  My dad made me choose between getting a pop for myself or buying one for the bear.  I believe that bear only got one orange pop off of me.

Although my grandparents died a number of years ago and the farm has since be sold (to the Torklesons, I think) it's amazing how Google Maps can bring back memories.

Here's a funny video for those that haven't seen it yet.  Kid's Rock.

Ret,

Your Caps have caused a lot of wingless chickens tonight ... six goals in the 1st. Somewhere Gerry Cheever, Bobby Orr and Eddy Shore are crying.

In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, 'Mrs Jones, do you know me?' She responded, 'Why, yes, I do know you, Mr Williams. I have known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you have been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you are a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you will never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.'

The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, 'Mrs Jones, do you know the defense attorney?'

She again replied, 'Why yes, I do. I have known Mr Bradley since he was a
Youngster, too. He is lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.'

The defense attorney nearly died.

The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said,
'If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I will send you both to the electric chair.'
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

That place is called Kellogs Northwoods in Longville.  They used to have the bear inside the store as you recall.  I am to young to remeber it, but recall hearing my grandfather and father speak of it regularly.  Today all they have a stuff black bear that stands inside the store.  With all the new regulations, a live black bear wasnt cutting the mustard anymore.

Longville is still known as the Turtle Race Captiol of the World.  Every Wedneday thousands pack the small streets to race their turtles.  Its something like I have never seen before.  As a kid you always looked forward to Wednesday and the chance to win it all.

The whole area has changed a lot in my tenure, and I would not say for the best.  The goofiest thing I ever saw was a place called A Dong Chinnese on 371 as you pulled into Brainard.  Now Brainard is like a suburb of the city with all the stores and attractions.  Its grown quite busy.  We have thought about heading further north to get away from all carnival type atmosphere.

Klopenhimer and OzJohnnie, I also have Longville connections. My dad purchased some land and a cabin on Kego Lake the year I was born. In the early 60's he added a bunk house since there were eight kids in the family. Many fond memories. Now there are two additional cabins on the property courtesy of my siblings. I was up there a few weekends ago for the EelPout Festival in Walker.

OzJohnnie, my "little girl" was in Sydney for the weekend. She loved the city. She sent me a postcard with a picture of Wollongong on it. Looks like a wonderful place.

Anyone going to the Big Ten Wrestling Championships at Williams Arena this weekend?

The Caps looked invincible last night. Hope they can keep it up. I just wish someone would look at Olie's stats and figure out that his better days are behind him. I know he's a good guy and all that, but Johnson has looked so much better than Olie, I just don't understand why they feel there is any question about who should be #1 goalie, and that Johnson should be Huet's backup.

Speaking of ice, is anyone going to start to question AlGore and his rapidly melting credibility regarding "global warming?"

When it is 10 degrees out and colder I don't believe in it.  When it is 60 degrees three days later I do.

Not me. Global warming is real:(

It is not, or shouldn't be, at least, a politically divisive issue.

Out of order, I'll show you out of order! You don't know what out of order is, Mr Task! I'd show you but I'm too old, I'm too tired, and I'm too f----n blind. If I were the man I was 5 years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to this place. Out of order, who the hell do you think you're talking to?
