What happened to the days when it cost two chickens and three dozen eggs to have a baby delivered?  Throw in a couple of jars of strawberry preserves for the circumcision.

But could you clarify how Navy medicine is not more "Socialist ... er socialized medicine" than any single-payer proposal currently in the pipeline?

Might be the bullets, although that's not a certainty.  And it might be that in enlisting in the military a person forfeits some Rights (like the First Amendment, Goldman v Weinberger, 1986).  And it might be that it's voluntary.

So, if you're arguing that current proposals entail the forfeiture of Rights, then one may agree there is no difference.  On the voluntary nature of these proposals, I think the military has one up.

I fault Obama's and Clinton's proposals for being far too timid.

Then they are obviously flawed.

The current system has American healthcare by far the most expensive in the world, despite below average longevity and infant mortality rates, and insurance company execs raking in obscene 'earnings' - am I missing something about how great things are now?

I think you make an effort to focus on what sounds bad, rather than what is good, and the result is an unrealistically negative view of the US health care system.  For instance, according to Datamonitor:

* 95% of US breast cancer cases are detected early in stages I or II.  20% of European cases are detected in late stages.

* The US survival rate for leukemia is 50%.  Europe? 35%.

Sure the US is expensive.  My father-in-law's hip replacement in the "free" Australian public system happened after a 13 month wait with two separate two-month delays on the day of the surgery.  In the US, under 5% of patients wait longer than 4 months for elective surgery.  I wonder if he would have minded the premiums to be rid of his hip pain 7 months sooner.

So in answer to your question, yes, I think you are missing how great things are.

I now look for retagent to chastise me for posting this, but like a moth to a flame I couldn't resist.  Weakness.  It's what separates us from JC.

In 1999 I had a whole 10 day wait to get my first screening colonoscopy. 4 days later I had colon resection to remove cancer. It got caught in time so I needed no chemo or/and radiation. I'm told the average wait for colonoscopy screening in countries with socialized medicine is 12 - 18 months. Nobody can tell me I'd have had a better prognosis even if my wait would have been 6 months.
KR is better qualified to weigh in on that.

57, God bless you that it got caught in time.

Here is my question though on these claims of long waits in other countries.  A colonoscopy is a proceedure that is routinely recommended at a certain age.  If one had to schedule your first routine test 12-18 months ahead of time it would certainly be inconvenient but not necessarily life threatening; since you would still get the routine proceedure as recommended in terms of timing.

Now on the other hand if your doctor notices something suspect while examining you and suggests you get a colonoscopy and you had to wait 12-18 months, that would be criminal.

So what really is happening in these other countries?  Are people having to wait the same amount of time in both types of situations?  In the critical situation do they have to wait longer than we would have to in this country, under the same diagnosis?

A much smaller scale similarity.  If my car is broken down on the highway and I have to wait two days to get a tow truck out and another five days to get it fixed, I would have a big problem.  If I called the same service place to get my 60,000 mile scheduled service at 59,500 miles and was told I had to wait a week for an appointment, I'd say fine, no problem.

BTW, I'm not a advocate of socialized medicine per se, but always curious about generalized statistical statments in general.

so .......not to beat a dead walleye but.....I found a market nearby that had walleye!  Bought some, BBQ'd it and made some taco's.  Very good!  Washed it down with a Corona and a Modelo.

As to Carl Eller......ever hear of PCP?

I  took Tiger against the entire field.  C'mon Eldrick.  Hope to see a lot of this over the weekend.

+k to everyone for the recommendations

Putting walleye in a taco is like putting a $50 a shot tequila in a margarita. A waste of good stuff.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

What do you have to pay for walleye out there?

One of the new managers at the bank stopped into my office to have a little chat today.  He noticed my picture of Brian Weber laying out for a catch against St. Olaf on my computer's desktop (Zip, shocked that it isn't a picture of Kofoed?) and mentioned that he played a little college football himself.  Apparently he was the long snapper at UW-La Crosse from 1992 to 1995 and was a little surprised when I asked him why he wasn't wearing his National Championship rings--it took him about 30 seconds to retrieve an old photo album from his desk full of pictures of him at the Stagg Bowl.  He also quickly rattled off the 3 losses and one tie of his college career.  I just as quickly pointed out that St. John's was the only team he played and never beat.

So I'm headed to Kansas City tomorrow to take in a couple of Twins games and enjoy a beautiful spring weekend in the midwest.  Forecast for tomorrow: 46, rain, wind up to 22 MPH.  Saturday?  44 with a rain/snow mix.  Sweet.

It's always cheaper per pound to buy it, than to catch it yourself.

There are countless reasons why America lags behind other countries in many "healthcare quality categories." Not the least of which is the fact that we are the fattest country on the planet, we walk/bike less than any other country, we have more fast food restaurants than anyone else, we smoked more over the past 75 years than anyone else, etc. The list can go on and on the only variable is how much time you have to read the list and how much I can type before I get carpal tunnel syndrome.
I saw the Michael Moore movie.  This was visually observable when he went to the various countries, but he never mentioned it (for obvious reasons). :D
