Please consider this a "history" post, not politics.  But if you get a chance, watch "Bobby" on Showtime tomorrow night (it's been on the last two nights).  For those of us who are children of the 60s and in in Mr. Yipsi's longevity zip code, it will bring back a lot of memories - the music, LSD, etc.  It's good viewing.

Gene McCarthy was my guy in '68 (my earliest connection with SJU!) but I liked Bobby, too - even though I could not mention his name in my parents' home without provoking an argument.  I remember lying awake at home watching the CA returns come in, then Bobby's speech at the Ambassador, and then the shooting.  A week later I, too, was in California (reporting for duty on the USS Black (DD-666!)) and several years later got to walk through the Ambassador Hotel, which by then was long past its prime and close to its end.  Anyway, watch it if you can.  I'm pretty damn near a Republican by now but I do think RFK was special.

Happy birthday, Snoop.  I wish I was 55 again.
Happy Birthday Snoop and best wishes to everyone else out there with anything to celebrate.  And best wishes to everyone who celebrates every new day.

Those of us who were young and idealistic in 1968 can understand the anger with anyone who even mentions the word assassination during this election.  Each generation has it's defining moments and the experts say the defining moment for us baby boomers was the breakdown of law and order on top of the growing disilusion with the Vietnam War in 1968.  Those of you who come from later generations might want to read up on this pivotal year in our history.  The parallels 40 years later are awful strong and it's only June.  In the infinite world of "what if's", 1968 has an abundance of alternate permutations.

Whoa. You guys are getting a bit heavy and making me remember how old I am.

Whilst I am old enough to remember 1968, and did have a lottery number, and was afraid of seeing a white mustang while delivering the Mpls. Tribune every morning, being a later in life dad means I hang with guys in their 30's mostly.

So let me tell you this story.

Being a hockey dad, I spend countless hours with other hockey dads. We end up talking about everything under the sun. I've got them fooled pretty much. They all think I am about 43.  ;)

However, once in awhile I screw up and say something like "I remember when such and such happened..". Then they look at me and say "well Bob, I don't remember that. I was only 2." Or something like that.

Anyway, last year we were playing a game in 57's home town of Chippewa Falls. It was in between periods, and we were, like usual, standing around talking about not much.

The PA was cranking out classic rock. At this point, it was the Fab Four with "Paperback Writer."

One of the 30 something dads says " this is a good song, who is this band?"

I am sure the look on my face was contorted, as I disgustingly looked at this guy and said "who is this band? who is this band? Well, this would be the frickin' BEATLES for crissakes!"

That's all I got.  :)

Hmm, the Beatles... sounds familiar  .... is that the band Paul McCartney was with before Wings?

I am old enough that some of my first memories that have stuck with me are the daily news reports showing combat in Vietnam, body counts and the violent "Peace" protests.  I remember my Godmothers husband (my cousin in law) coming back from Vietnam and getting spit on by people.  I also remember RFK's assassination and watching the news reports from the hospital as they tried to save his life.  I also remember my oldest brother having a very low lottery number.  He enlisted in the Coast Guard the day he graduated from High School and arranged to leave in the end of August.  He went through boot camp and was then sent to St. Louis where he reported to a squadron that was training on the Swift Boats.  They were loaded into a Navy transport in New Orleans and were actually on the way to the Panama Canal to head for Vietnam when Nixon stopped sending troops.  They turned around and went back to New Orleans.

So far my family has been lucky in our nations wars.  They have fought in WWI, in China with the AEF, WWII, Korea and Vietnam and so far no one has gotten killed, several wounded but none dead.

("Pius picks" section).

John Baumgardner, QB/DB, 5-10, 165, from Milwaukee's Pius XI, the largest private high school in Wisconsin.  The Pius Popes finished the 2007 season 2-7 (according to MaxPreps the Popes were 9-3 in 2006 but were 1-8 in each of the two years before that, so it appears the winning season was the aberration).  One of their two wins in 07 was over the Bay View/Conservatory of Lifelong Learning.   I'll leave it to the more knowledgeable folks to provide the commentary. :-X :D

I can't wait for football to start.

More history...

Everyone mentions that JFK was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald.

They rarely mention that RFK was assassinated by a disaffected Palestinian, Sirhan Sirhan.  You Band of Brothers fans will remember that the lead prosecutor in the trial was Buck Compton.

Not trying to forecall the future, but any similarity to 1968 might arise in some "middle eastern crazy" assassinating an apostate Muslim, here and here.

Wasn't there a Doris Day song called Hey Sirhan Sirhan?   ::)

After reading some of what Ralph linked and also from other readings I am firmly convinced that there is no difference between radical fundamentalists in most belief systems.

Really?  Maybe it's my age, but Sirhan Sirhan is part and parcel of the RFK assasination story for me.  Perhaps it's because he's in prison here in CA and his periodic parole hearings always get major coverage.

Since I was in ROTC at SJU starting the fall after RFK's assaination, servred almost 5 years in the Army, but never made it out of the US since the Truce was signed before I got out of the Artillery Officers Course, my memories are also quite vivid.

I sometimes wonder what would happen in today's media circus atmosphere to someone like RFK, or even JFK. They were both flawed individuals, as are we all, but seemed to have an abiding love for country, and a desire to serve it to make it a better place. Now, someone like them would be raked over the coals, and might not even get out of the blocks. I don't condone personal foibles, but there has to be some perspective.

Or perhaps it was the spectacular manner in which Oswald left this planet.

IMHO you saw what would have happened to them.  You had 8 years to see that in the Clinton years.  The treatment of the president is directly related to what party he belongs to.
