Strong dollar = larger trade deficit. Always a trade off. Push the balloon in one place, it bulges in another.

Folks obsess about the trade deficit here in Australia as well, but I'm not sure why.  Australia carries a large and consistent trade deficit.  But a trade deficit merely means a nation imports more than it exports.  In other words, the country maintains a competitive advantage in broadly fueled wealth generation and is able to sustain the purchase of high value goods.  China maintains a huge trade surplus for two reasons: 1) they rip-off and mass produce better than the Japanese in their hey-day, and 2) the vast, vast, vast majority of the population is so poor they can hardly buy enough rice, much less high priced Western exports.  In other words, China is not good at the broad distribution and generation of wealth.  Saudi Arabia also carries a massive trade surplus.  Where would you rather live?

Australia also has this false economic meme running that tax cuts fuel inflation, or, in other words, that tax cuts create new cash in the economy.  I work double hard on this one because there is no such thing as a zero-sum game except in government redistribution.  Governments do not create money (unless they decide to turn on the printing presses).  They merely collect and redistribute and the only inflationary (or deflationary) impact a government can make with tax policy would be to tax and then burn the cash - removing it from circulation.  Anyone ever hear of a government doing that?

retagent.......nice birdie.  No offense intended but  the difference is, you wern't playing to win the freakin' U.S. Open.  I have played that course several times.  Despite the lack of length, that hole is no gimmie birdie, especially under U.S. Open conditions, i.e., the rough. The pressure and Rocco's lack of length might have had something to do with it.  He played within himself all week, no reason to change.  I guess he felt, make them beat me (and Tiger did).  I play to a 5 to 8 handicap and that is a really tough hole to birdie if you dont hit the fairway.  Tigers birdie on Sunday was, Tigeresq!

If you are in So. Cal and want to play, let me know.  I'll buy the beer ;)

Sabretooth Tiger

If you don't mind someone who shoots 8+ on every hole, considers it a victory to make contact between the club face and the ball, and who considers the beer cart the highlight of a golf outing . . .

I'm available to fill you your foursome . . .  8)

I am sorry I know Tiger is the man, but I was pulling for Rocco.  Everyone will talk about how Tiger pulled this off on swollen knee, but lets give some props to Rocco for taking the number 1 player in the world to the limit.

I saw on ESPN last night that Rocco was the 158th ranked player in the world and has made 13.1 million dollars playing golf.  I would assume with a thrifty portfolio manager, that Rocco is set for life.

Now think about the money that Tiger has made playing golf and his thrifty portfolio manager and how much money he has.  Is there ever a time when you have to much money?  I'd just like to have enough money to be able to get stupid with some and not feel it come bill pay time ;D

I was with ya Klop, I wanted Rocco to win. The media down here ate him up. He could run for Mayor of San Diego against Speedy Gonzalez and pull a respectable 40%. Anyone with the last name Gonzalez automatically has 50% of the vote down here assuming everyone showed up to vote.

Everyone talks about Tiger's knee, how about the fact that Rocco has 3 fused vertebrae in his low back! Want to know why his drives were consistently 40-50 yards shorter than Tigers? Watch his swing, he has about a 20 degree decrease in rotation in his lumbar spine.

Snoop,
Where in SoCal are you?
I'd love to go fishing/golfing/drinking beer. I doubt I'll have a whole helluva lot of free time in the coming year, but how does your schedule look for next July? :-\

Too much "money"?  Tiger, or any rich person for that matter, probably doesn't have much actual money.  Instead they have a huge portfolio of investments.  And, if you are guessing where my line of argument is going, the most successful investors continually get more investments (like Warren Buffett) because they are good at identifying money generating opportunities.  And of course, those opportunities make more opportunities - rising tides lifting all boats, etc.

So my answer to the question is that a person who has too much money is a person that doesn't know how to use their money to get more money - like these lottery winners that lose it all in a year or two - and that pretty much sorts itself out.  So, no, IMHO one can't have too much money.

True to a point, but any rich person who doesn't have a few 100K in "cash" is a fool.  I'm quite certain that Berkshire could go to zero tomorrow and Warren would still not be seeking foodstamps!  While Tiger no doubt has much of his money 'working hard', I'd be rather shocked if he also didn't have much of it safely 'sitting and working slowly'.

Unlike you and me, the truly rich may not carry around a bunch of paper, but they DO have plenty of 'cash'!  (Unless they are truly stupid!)

I heard yesterday that Tiger grossed $215 million in 2007.  Only 10 million of that was from winning golf tournaments.  Fricking Amazing!!

I always pull for someone to beat Tiger, (if for no other reason than to add a little suspense to Sunday afternoons,) and was hoping Rocco could pull it off but his shot was Sunday. Letting Tiger off the ropes with a chance for ice, rest and more pain meds was never going to work in Rocco's favor.
