What's football talk?  Does that have to do with Hamm's?

Well Stiffyfest does have something to do with Hamm's and Stiffyfest has to do with football so I think yes it does.

Hmmm...for some reason the term "Stiffyfest" brings to mind something entirely different than barbequing at a football game.  :o ;)

It's probably a little early to be talking about this for some but what's everyone's opinion of the MIAC this year?
You're right, it's too early.  Maybe after teams start practice next month.

Any teams on the rise?
Some are probably higher than others right now but they'll need to get over that before practice starts.

Is the UST hype something to actually take note of?
Ha.  This suggests you really haven't been reading the board.  Only seeing is believing as far as UST goes.

Anyway, welcome to the Board.  Just don't expect any football talk here for a month or more.  Baseball (the Twins) and even hockey maybe, but not football.  Also, you'll need to declare your school allegiance and your favorite beer so everyone will know when to pick on you. 8)

Happy Independence Day to all.  Get your flags out and keep the troops in mind. :)

AO

I remember the football talk starting a little earlier after the Johnnies had won the championship the year before......odd. ;D

but in all seriousness it sounded from Wonka's summary as if Hoag had a legitimate point.  What's the point of a show where a pretty girl picks out a date?  The girl should have a reason to have to go on national tv to get a date.  I'm sure there are hundreds of bennies who were at a natural disadvantage when it came to choosing a mate, and who would be deserving of a little better selection.  :D

Happy Independence Day, America, the last best hope of earth (the last paragraph of which being the most moving call to action, in my opinion, ever delivered - even surpassing the second paragraph of the Declaration).

I know many will largely think me a wanker, but I'll take the chance because if we can't revel in civic pride on this day, then when can we?

I just read an excerpted paragraph from Calvin Coolidge's 1926 Independence Day Address which struck me as being very worthy of this day:

"About the Declaration there is a finality that is exceedingly restful. It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for something more modern. But that reasoning can not be applied to this great charter. If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers."

Happy 4th of July!!!

Drink a Hamm's or six for me, I get to spend the next 30 hours taking care of those who have defended us, those who currently defend us and their families.

Could be my most patriotic 4th ever and I won't even see fireworks or have a BBQ. I am starting to realize how lucky I am that on a daily basis I get to meet some of the bravest and most courageous men and women in this great country of ours. Yesterday I met a 20 year old marine who lost his right leg from just below the knee to an IED 2 weeks ago. He will soon be starting rehab and learning how to use a prosthesis with the goal of "getting back over there with my battalion where I belong."

Oz,
Great work on the quotes! Keep 'em coming!

I for the following in an e-mail forward from my mom. No clue on it's accuracy, source, or anything like that, but here it is:

       LOVING AMERICA

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by
The Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example
Of 'empire building' by George Bush.

He answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many
Of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom
Beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in
Return was enough to bury those that did not return."

            You could have heard a pin drop.

                        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then there was a conference in France where a number of international
Engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a
Break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have
You heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft
Carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended
To do, bomb
Them?"
A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly, "Our carriers have three
Hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are
Nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore
Facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000
People three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of
Fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen
Helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from
Their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France
Have?"
            You could have heard a pin drop.
                        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~

            A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that
Included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and
French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a
Large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those
Countries.
Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a
French admiral suddenly complained that, "whereas Europeans learn many
Languages, Americans learn only English." He then asked, "Why is it
That
We always have to speak English in these conferences rather than
Speaking French?"

            Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, "Maybe
it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so
You wouldn't have to speak German."

                        You could have heard a pin drop.

            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            One more..
            A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to
France
On a tour.
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane.
At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his
Carry on.
"You have been to France before, monsieur? " the customs officer
Asked
Sarcastically.
            Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
            "Then you should know enough to have your passport
Ready."
            The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't
Have
To
Show it."
            "Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on
Arrival in France !"
            The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look.
            Then he quietly explained, "Well, when I came ashore at
Omaha Beach on D-Day in '44 to help liberate this country, I couldn't
Find any Frenchmen to show it to."
                        You could have heard a pin drop.
            What Is a Veteran?
            A "Veteran"
-- whether active duty, discharged, retired,Or Reserve --
Is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check
Made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of
"up to,And including ---his life."
     That is honor,
And there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact.
                          God bless America and our Military...
Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.
Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.
Gray Fox
 I was walking past the mental hospital the other day,and all the  patients were shouting ,'13....13....13'
The fence was too high to see over,but I saw a little gap in the planks and looked through to see what was going on.  Some bastard poked me in the eye with a stick.
Then they all started shouting '14....14....14'...  :-[
It seems that there's nothing Americans like to do more than to bash the French and call them ungrateful cowards.
According to the National Park Service:
QuoteThe Statue of Liberty National Monument officially celebrated her 100th birthday on October 28, 1986. The people of France gave the Statue to the people of the United States over one hundred years ago in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution. Over the years, the Statue of Liberty has grown to include freedom and democracy as well as this international friendship.
...
The Statue was a joint effort between America and France and it was agreed upon that the American people were to build the pedestal, and the French people were responsible for the Statue and its assembly here in the United States. However, lack of funds was a problem on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In France, public fees, various forms of entertainment, and a lottery were among the methods used to raise funds.
...
The Statue was completed in France in July, 1884 and arrived in New York Harbor in June of 1885 on board the French frigate "Isere" which transported the Statue of Liberty from France to the United States. In transit, the Statue was reduced to 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 crates. The Statue was re-assembled on her new pedestal in four months time.
"We will not forget that liberty here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected." -- President Grover Cleveland, accepting the Statue of Liberty on behalf of the United States, October 28, 1886
While it is usually fun to make jokes about the French.  On Independence Day it is good to remember we may not be celebrating our Freedoms today if it was not for the help of the French against the British.
So for today let us be thankful for our French Allies who came to our aid when we called.  Just as we have gone to their aid when they called.
When you talk to a WWII vet who landed in France they will tell you it was worth every drop of American, British, Canadian, French and other allied blood when they liberated the towns and villages.
Happy 4th of July.
On NPR this morning they read the entire Declaration of Independence.  Quite moving.
KR, I remember the last time I spend the 4th of July on duty.  My ship (the Midway - now a floating museum in San Diego - make sure to visit) was in Alameda and I went up on the flight deck in the evening where I was able to watch the fireworks all over the Bay.  Quite a view.
I was also on duty the day in 1969 that man first walked on the moon.  We had a television on the quarterdeck and watched Neil Armstrong take those first steps.  (Where were we?  San Diego, of course!)  Funny how one remembers those things - I suspect you'll remember this day spent on duty for a long time as well.
