TDT- Delmon is hitting .285 right now. If my math is correct, he'll have to hit, what? .336 the rest of the way to finish above .300. ? Might as well go out and buy the Hamm's now. All you other baseball geniuses on here that agreed with TDT should buy me some, too.

So, who watched the Vikes play?  The Packers were on yesterday for me.  I fell asleep.

On the Vikes, did they get pumped as bad as the box reads?  Fumbles killed the Norsemen, but Seattle seemed to rack up the yards anyway.

Officially retired as of today, +K to the regulars, -K for TDT (winner of the delmon young .300 contest).  As the Dead said what a long strange trip it's been,  Thanks to KR for picking up the military service, though i was no doctor.  (the difference between a doctor and a mechanic is a mechanic washes his hands before taking a piss),  Hopefully back in time for some Johnnie games this fall.

Congrats on the retirement Stanbob!

BTW, I wash my hands before I piss, especially since I'm on OBGyn right now.

Kilted - Still think El Caballo couldn't help us? He's only been the best player in the bigs this month. Here's his season breakdown.

.314 (Morneau .311)
28 bombs (18)
100 RBI (89)
61 runs (69)
4 stolen bases (0)
12.5 mill (8.5)

I'd love to see him hitting third, between Mauer and Morneau. That has the potential to be a better combo than Papi/Manny over the next few years, IMO. And we could easily hide him at DH when he finally gets too fat to play OF.

I was the one thinking he would be a good addition.

TC was the one opposed.

Though now that he's on the DL for 6-8 weeks I'm seeing TC's side of things!

I just got home, feels good since I haven't been here since 0400 yesterday with no sleep in the interim. Wayyyyyy too many pregnant women in this part of the world and they all have issues and questions. As a younger man, I never thought I'd say this, but there definitely is such a thing as seeing way too much vagina.

+K all around for not having to be back at the hospital for a full 14 hours!

For the record, you heard it here first: Mike Lamb will be World Series MVP.

Are we trading him? :)

Taking my oldest to the game tonight. Cheap seats. Can't afford the jacked-up prices for a Yankee series but still attending to further indoctrinate the family's Yankee hatred.

Make a handmade sign that says "Yuck the Fankees" or "Gay-rod" and he'll be well on his way.

Speaking of former Yankees, interesting to see Gary Sheffield placed on waivers today.  Deep down in my gut I know it would be a bad move, but can someone with more baseball savvy explain to me why the Twins shouldn't think about getting a Right handed power bat for the stretch run? Especially with Cuddyer down for another 6-8 weeks.

I can see him being a very angry man with a lot of pent-up rage that could be unleashed on opposing pitching. I think he would force more teams to pitch to Morneau hitting out of the 5 spot, however I guess I don't see a defensive location for him, meaning he would DH which is what p*ssed him aoff about Detroit. What other reasons not to get him am I missing?

I guess the $14mil he's owed next year would be an issue as well.

Mr. Ypsi

WOW - I hadn't seen the Sheffield news yet!  That was quick: just yesterday he griped to the media about DHing (which he knew was his role when he signed) and 'platooning' (he's played 80% of the games he wasn't on the DL).  Guess Dombrowski and Leyland don't take no sh*t! :o

Not sure whether this is a sign the Tigers have thrown in the towel or a desparate attempt to wake them up for the stretch run.  While I'm no longer optimistic, I'm still hopin'! ;)

While his average sucks, Sheff can still occasionally single-handedly win a game.  And consistent word is that he has NOT been the lockerroom cancer that some feared during his Tigers stint.  He might well be worth picking up.

Mr. Ypsi

Just went looking and still can't find the Sheffield news - where did you see that?

wow, just read the lone "reader's reaction" to Frank's piece on Kofoed/SJU QB situation.... someone certainly has a chip up his a$s about SJU (and this is coming from a damn proud UST alum)-- my advice to TheOmegaMan: enjoy using your SCSU diploma to help you draw straight lines on your unemployment applications. That and being emergency TP are about all it's good for!

Is this an honest question or are you just baiting me?

The reasons you give for not acquiring him--the money and likely lack of playing time--are great ones.  He's not a $14MM per year player and hasn't been for at least 3 seasons.

But beyond the fact that he isn't great defensively and would have to fight for at bats is the fact that he doesn't really, you know... "deserve" many at bats anymore.  He's had 321 plate appearances this year and has hit .219/.321/.371 in them.  (Point of reference:  Nick Punto, .256/.318/.375)  He's 39, so the chances his statistical collapse are more permanant than injury-related are pretty high.  Even if he bounces back to his 2006-07 level, that's still a far cry from Gary Sheffield, circa 2000--his last two Slugging %'s are his lowest in the last decade.

---

Also, LOL @ Ypsi:

Quote[W]ord is that he has NOT been the lockerroom cancer that some feared during his Tigers stint.

QuoteThat was quick: just yesterday he griped to the media about DHing (which he knew was his role when he signed) and 'platooning' (he's played 80% of the games he wasn't on the DL).

---

If this was New York and we had the Yankees' Monopoly money to throw around, this might not be a franchise-crippling move to make.  Since this isn't New York and the Twins need to make do with what they have, I'll present these numbers:

Bobby Kielty, Career:
Vs. LHP:  .296/.379/.503
Vs. RHP:  .228/.329/.348

If Kielty has anything left (and I'm not sure he does, but it was only 10 months ago that he hit a HR in the World Series), it would be as an effective bat off the bench against LHP.  Which, coincidentally, pretty much sums up Randy Ruiz's lot in life.  Plus, they're (virtually) free!

---

Also, this is a complete and total non-story because the waivers that the Tigers asked on Gary Sheffield were revokable waivers--though I wouldn't be surprised if the Tigers let a claiming team have him and his $14MM salary for next season.  These are the same waivers that allowed the Twins to not pay Livan as he continues his quest to give up 300 hits this season.

If the Twins had decided that what the Rockies offered in return for Livan after claiming him off waivers (which was, of course, nothing) was not sufficient return for him (it was), the Twins could have pulled him off waivers and kept him on the roster.  Had the Twins waived him again this season, the waivers would have been binding.

If Sheffield passes through waivers, the Tigers could then trade him to any team between now and the end of the season.  I'd imagine if Sheffield passes through waivers and really heats up and some team gets desperate enough for a righthanded bat, the Tigers might eat enough of his salary to get him and his paycheck out of town.  The chances of all those things happening are slim, the chances of the Twins being the lucky recipient are non-existent.

What's the world coming to?  I agree with a Tommie!

Mr. Ypsi

To OB and TC: right up to the last few days, Sheff (amazingly) HAS been a model citizen.  The boos came when he was having four consecutive pathetic at-bats, which apparently led to the media complaints, which led to the waivers.  While many of us were extremely dubious about his acquisition, he was not previously 'hated' in Detroit.

I'll stick with my previous statement: his average is pathetic, but he can still occasionally win games single-handedly.  Whether or not that fits any teams needs is up to them.  (And can you blame me if I seek to raise his trade value? :D)

Mr. Ypsi

I still have yet to see that Sheff was put on waivers.  He is playing against the Jays currently, and has two home runs ???

KR, are you settin' me up? ;)

TC,
I figured there were many more reasons not to go after him, I just couldn't think of them at the time.

I love Delmon Young. I'm not in love with him, but I love him. Especially when he launches a 3 run bomb off the closer for the evil empire!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

KR, OK, I guess you're not just toyin' with my mind! ;D

Revocable waivers are not what I envisioned from your first post.  Sounds like just a ploy to guage trading interest.  Not quite the same as 'they fired the guy'! :D
