Is anyone besides me, at least a little surprised that ETBU didn't get at least one vote in the d3.com rankings. Surely the Johnnies should have enough of a rep that it would have opened some eyes to that possibility. I know the Johnnies did not play a real tight game, but with the number of returning players, and transfers for ETBU that played well, one might think that they are better than we realized.

Yet Mississippi College lost 42 - 6 to #24 Millsaps and still got 18 votes (points?)

I've seen a lot of rivalry games that had odd results. You wouldn't think a 2-8 St. Thomas team would be competitive on St. John's home field last year either on paper. Until MC and ETBU play each other, or at least a common opponent, I don't think there's a clear reason for ETBU to be ahead of MC, not when they were a distant fourth in the ASC coaches poll and 5-5 overall last year.

ETBU could be better than realized. St. John's could be worse. It'll take some more games being played to know that for sure.

Just ran across this article in the Strib and thought it was kind of interesting. I seems like whether you love the Tommies or hate them (I'll assume most on this board with go with the latter option...) there's always some sort of story to tell with this years team.

Other observations that I feel that I should comment on since I've been away for so long.

I saw Touchdown Tommy's review of the UST scrimmage at Johnniefootball.com and there was one thing the utterly confused me and made me question the mans sanity...

"I was impressed by blue chip recruit Greg Morse (QB, St. Paul Como Park) who clearly was the most athletic player on the entire field.  I'm not sure if he will start the season as the Tommies starting quarterback, but he should be"

What exactly did you see there that I missed. My friends and I all saw the same QB as you (I think) and we were surprisingly sober so I'm not sure were that comment exactly comes from. Can he throw a nice ball? Absolutely. Will he contend to start next season? Without a doubt...but I think even Mr. Morse himself would admit that he isn't the BEST athlete... I assumed that when he was in high school he did a ton of running and made plays with his feet but in actuality he's more of a tradional drop back passer from what I've seen and heard from others. And for the record I believe he was the 3rd QB to see time in UST's first game...

Another thought that I have regards the Johnnies...I feel like they'll be worse this year than they have been in many years...But I think people need to realize that the team they just played was from TEXAS and had a ton of transfers....I understand that ETBU was a middle of a pack team last year...but if all those players played in this league...They would for sure be contenders...I honestly feel that the Johnnies could fall out of the Top 3 in the coference though.

Last notes:

I like what Caruso is doing at UST....He's changing the culture around here and it's really cool to see people getting excited. If he keeps winning (and stays for the long haul) I think that UST will be one of the premire college football settings in the MIAC.....

Fritz Waldvogel is a stud and when other recievers begin to step up your going start seeing some really big numbers put up by the Tommie offense...

The defense is improved obviously, but look for it to be stellar when Tommy Becker finally gets play and two year starter LB Ross Petterson gets back in the line up.

Oh and I'm calling it now, Tommies make the playoffs.

They're off to a good rebuilding start, but will not have enough depth to win late in the season, after the inevitable injuries pile up.  Let him get a couple more good recruiting classes on campus and then you can starting talking playoffs.

You had me up to here, Generic Dude.  I'm looking forward to Johnnie/Tommie week.  The natives are getting restless with their new coach and we may actually see a little support for the USTD Carriers around here.

When did the MIAC start a playoff system?

Jeez, it's been quieter around here than a Kalgoorlie brothel the week before payday.  Here's a little something for your viewing pleasure.  It's Lance "Buddy" Franklin kicking his 100th for the season along with the crazy fans pitch invasion.

The Hawks get a week off to rest up and heal some injuries before the semi-finals weekend after next.  So, next weekend all I got are the Johnnies.

Tommies are garbage.  I'm calling it now, Tommies finish the season 5-5 and even lose to SJU in the process.  Travis Jackson
