OZ-I don't know about letting you back in the J's fan club-falling back to sleep-isn't that what you say to the boss when you take a holiday?

In my defense, it was 3:50am on a Sunday morning...

Can I play a little snoopdawg?  At the ballet concert this morning I was waiting in the coffee line behind an incredibly hot mom.  I was doing my best not to be noticeably distracted when up walked Shane Warne, the Sandy Koufax of cricket without the arthritis.  Warne is the best spinner ever to play cricket, and arguably the best bowler (pitcher) to ever play the game.

But undoubtedly, his prime accomplishment is getting married to the definition of wow (he's now separated.  A sports star can't keep the women away, I guess).

ARF isn't enough; now it's cricket.  Okay, picking up the Continental perspective, here's something for Oz and those who like ARF and/or cricket. ;)

I am nervous about this week...

I think I can get through the week, but I am nervous about whether it's going to rain on the Stiftungfestivities on Saturday.

The lab tests coming back?  Penicillin usually fixes that right up.

It's official!  Red Hot Bennie has now seen more Johnnie Football this season than Duffman.

So does this mean that RHB is over Blake OR does this mean that Duffman can't witness a Johnnie game without Blake? (closed circuit to Duffman, Blake was there on Saturday)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I'm OK with that.  Especially since a boat now sits in my garage :)

Does that mean you'll be rowing to Collegeville next Saturday?

So for the benefit of those of us in the WIAC Pick 'ems, (Blue Devil Bob, Flash, myself, etc,) what is everyone's take on River Falls.  Better than last year, worse, what is your overall impression?  Just trying to get a read on them for what to expect this season and any help would be appreciated.

Hey 413, the rain made it pretty tough to get a good read on either team yesterday.  I'm sure neither team was able to execute their gameplan as they wanted.  Still, River Falls didn't impress me in any way.  Outside of the one scoring drive, they didn't move the ball at all.  Zweifel was a total non-factor (which very well could have been due to the quarterback and the conditions).

Their defense didn't do much to stop the Johnnies early (when they passed at ease) or late (when the offensive line opened gaping holes on the last drive).  Their special teams hit the trifecta: they allowed a long return, botched an extra point, and had a couple horrible punts.  Their coaching staff seemed like they were just happy to be there; a coach literally flipped out and tackled a player after he recovered a fumble.  As esq mentioned below, they didn't do much to take advantage of what should have been an exploitable run defense on first and second down.

So, yeah... I didn't see much I liked about UW-RF on Saturday, and I'd imagine they're in for another also-ran effort in the WIAC.  Still, it would have been interesting to see them on a dry field.  With a talent like Zweifel, I'm sure they would have put some points on the board.  I just don't think they are a complete enough team to compete with the Johnnies (or most of the WIAC) under any conditions.

Thank, TC.  Even without the sloppy conditions, sounds like River Falls can be counted on for more of the same this season.  +karma

faunch

As part of next Saturday's Stiftungfestivities in Collegeville......there will be a collection for SJU football and basketball alum Todd Fultz.  Todd was seriously injured this past June in an auto accident.  Also, plans are underway for the La Playette to host a cookout after the game with proceeds going to the Fultz family.  Additional information will be forthcoming.

Oles win 17-0 yesterday.  Defense is strong this year, they've kept opponents off the scoreboard 7/8 quarters this year.  Offense looks good as well.  They are running the ball well.

True, but I have to question how good either of their opponents were. Luther has a new HC and new offense playing their first game . PLU was also playing their first game of the season, new quarterback, and a lot of underclassmen starting.
The Ole running game is certainly strong statistically, but as the Vikings found out today you also have to be able to throw the ball to win against good teams.  :-[

d3football.com's Top 25 Rakings are out.  Johnnies up to number 4.

Bethel falls to 13.

St Olaf continues to represent and pick up 24 votes.

And Augsburg, everyones favorite little engine that could, gets back in the votes with 10.

Good result all around for the MIAC.

Not bad at all.  Go, Johnnies, Go!

Also, I see where Hardin Simmons (St. John's opponent, 2000)  has now cracked the top 25.

First - Congrats to Augie Tech. If nothing else, they are adding to the evidence that the MIAC is a better conference than the d3 hierarchy seem  to believe.

Second - I can understand somewhat why some people wouldn't be hockey fans, but to dislike/hate hockey seems a little much. It has speed, requires more skills than other sports, and maybe, except for basketball, is the best at sustained action without stoppage of the major sports. If either WW or sfury would expound on what exactly it is that they HATE about hockey, I would be ever so grateful.

Lastly -  For Oz,    In my younger days we had a different definition for a "spinner" that had nothing to do with cricket, nudge, nudge,... wink, wink,.......... know what I mean, know what I mean?

I didn't say I hate it - I think WW used the H word - just that I don't like it, but it's not an active dislike of the sport or anything, just that I have no desire to follow it. Part of it is just what i was exposed to growing up. In southern Minnesota, hockey wasn't a big deal, certainly not like it is in the Cities and up north. For us it was hoops, football, baseball, track, etc. Hockey was something you played on Sega. In the 80s, I did love watching the NHL, particularly Gretzky's Oilers, and I was a hardcore bandwagon jumper with the North Stars during their 1991 run. And if I happen to be back home when the state tourney's going on, I'll try to tune in for a bit of the title game at least. But today the action of the sport just doesn't appeal to me, the soccer-like scores that littered the NHL for years were a big turnoff, and great skating, stick-handling and netminding just don't wow me, though I do appreciate the skill-set that's required.

I spend eight months a year arguing with people about how great the NBA is and always have to listen to people talk about how much they dislike the league. I don't really understand their arguments, so I understand if you think I'm a confused soul and don't know what I'm missing.

All that said, I'll throw in a shameless plug for one of the few hockey books I've ever read, and it's a good one. It's also written by a fellow Johnnie. John Rosengren's Blades of Glory (not starring Will Ferrell) came out about four years ago, and follows Bloomington Jefferson for a season. I'm sure all the puckheads on here would enjoy it.
