We should probably give Jimmy G (or whoever made the decision) some credit for not staying with one QB until they melted down completely.  (like most of us have been calling for).  My reaction yesterday was "here we go again, I'm getting sick of this crap".  But Hansel ran a very good offense and made the plays. 8)

And Drew Percival looked good too, eh?

I went to the Notre Dame/Purdue tilt yesterday to fill in the missing piece in the Austin Murphy Top 3. Although it started slow, it turned into a good game. One interesting note: As we parked at Holy Cross College, the Saints Hockey team was collecting the money ($20/car - and we complained about the URF boosting prices) We stopped to talk to the player we gave money to and he tells us that he played the last year (or two) at St John's. Then says that St John's is a much better football venue than UND. Unsolicited.

Another great game at Concordia...  Once again the defence keeps making big plays and allows us to stay in the game.  The only touchdown allowed was on a special teams kick-off (which we had to do 3 times because of offsides).  I thinking that CC could run the table this year, still early to say, but with Olaf losing yesterday we have sole possesssion of the MIAC.  Our offence needs to make some bigger plays and we can be unstopable.  Cory Johnson runs great usually in the first quarter until the Defence reads him.  This is where we need to get more of a pass game going.  The QB keep and the option only work for so long until we throw again.   Im sure we will be moved into the top 25 this week.  At the beginning of the year SJU was 4th and Bethel was 11th.... we have beaten them both.

The Cobbers are surely in the driver seat of the MIAC this year. Auggie Tech and their passing attack could be a bump in the road. Don't look past the Auggies as they have the best QB & best WR in the league.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

PRF07

Pretty early to be talking about the cobbers running the table.  Especially when one cobber fan says they need to get the running game going and the other says they need to get the passing game going.  Defense is clearly really tough for the cobbers, but it sounds like they are struggling on offense.  I see the cobbers losing 2 conference games this year.  (vs. the auggies and not sure where the other loss will come from)

I'd say that the Auggie QB-wr combo is the best in the conference.  Entirely due to the 3 step drop wide receiver screens they run to death.  Can't say that their downfield passing attack is very impressive only because we haven't really seen it yet, but when you're getting the production they are with what they are doing right now there is no need to throw the ball down the field.

I don't see a better qb in the conference than Augsburgs,  but as far as receivers go I think Frank and Arldt definitely give Winford a run for his money.

Side note.... Carleton won the knowledge bowl on Saturday.  Not much of a game, starters were out before the end of the third quarter.   We'll find out if Carleton is for real when they visit St. Olaf next week to try and avenge last years drubbing.

I second what sjusection105 says.  I think the cobbers will have their hands full with Augsburg.  They have the type of offense that can put points on the board quickly if they get into a rhythm.

Willy, where did you hear Linnemann? He's not on the Johnnie broadcasts anymore. Or was it on one of his other multimedia gigs? I know he's got a ton of them.

Crazy game on right now here. Jets scored 34 points in the second quarter against the Cardinals, as Kurt Warner had two picks and two fumbles. Now the Cardinals have scored 21 in the first 12 minutes of the third quarter so it's 34-21.

sfury - I was standing next to an SJU fan who was listening to the game on the radio. He was all too giddy to tell me about it (early 2nd quarter, FWIW). I might have just assumed it was Linneman, but it was definitely Johnnie radio. A drunk Frank Rickard chased him away before I could get any more details.

PRF07 - The Cobbers just beat the preseason favorites in games most (all?) assumed they would lose. I understand it's a long season..but I can't imagine getting off to a better start. If the rest of us can put up with Stagg Bowl talk from the Johnnie faithful at any time of the year, is it really so much to ask that you to accept some justified speculation from the Cobbers?
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

I slept (yes, I'm embarrassed) through the first half, so could someone help me out with the QB scuttlebutt?

* Boyle starts, apparently does poorly so Hansel is in and saves the day?

* Rumored that Hansel quit when he didn't get the job mid-week, and Jr lured him back?

* Crees has disappeared from sight, maybe a new injury?

So is Hansel the man now?

You're better off going back to sleep and just getting up Saturday to join the rest of us in seeing who's still standing.  Jimmy is probably the only one who knows what's going on with that position; all of us here are just guessing.

Are you really a writer for a newspaper or do I have you mixed up with someone else?  Linnemann has been off for years.  And listening to the broadcast on the internet, I heard no F bombs.  Check your sources, you are making TDT look creditable.

Section,

I agree, the cobbers better not look past Auggie Tech or any other MIAC opponent.  On any given saturday any team can win despite their record!  The cobbers need to find some consistency on offense soon.  They had some nice drives when they needed them the most.   Bethel has a good defense, but offense is limited especially when flannery is out of the game.  Flannery is close to a phil porta runner, extremely quick and a north/south runner.

All in all it's a good win for the cobbers, it's nice to see the Cobbers get back up to 250 yds rushing.

jelio,

The qb keep and option will be happening all year.  We run an option offense, not spread.  There were quite a few big plays on saturday.  You may be looking for 30+ yd plays, but that is not our style.  The big plays are 3 and 9 and we get a 15 yd completion that leads to a TD.  Also, CC is a running, grind it out on the ground team.  If bethel was reading C. Johnson after the first quarter, he wouldn't have rushed for 122 yds. on saturday.  It would have been 30 yds.

As usual, I was not impressed with the BU players over all demeanor.  At one point during the second half I wittnessed a BU starter relieve himself on the field!!  Thats right, he took a piss on the sideline in plain view of everyone.  I don't know if this player has some sort of medical issues or not, but taking a leak on the playing surface from the sideline is absolutely ridiculous!!! Especially when you are the visiting team.  Pissing on someone else's field is immature and pathetic.  I can't believe that a player would even think of doing something like that.  Way to go BU, once again you are the class of the MIAC!!!  WOW

"That patch of turf really tied the field together, did it not?"

Nice troll :P.  Good luck this week.

corn horn

400+ yards of offense against Bethel and people are concerned about the Cobbers getting away from the run (what?) or lack of a top shelf passing attack (what else is new?). Ye of little faith.

Here are some of the reasons Concordia will or will not run the MIAC table.

They WILL because...

1. The traditional upper eschelon of the conference have already been tucked unto their W pocket.
2. Defense is looking very, very good. Deep along the line and experienced in the secondary.
3. The slow to warm option threat is already heated up.
4. The loss to Willamette (wi-LAH-met) looks less aweful with them in the top 25 nationally.
5. Lots of confidence going into a bye-week, then Homecoming.
6. Schedule sets up nicely with remaining home and away games.
7. Their uniforms aren't ugly anymore.

They WON'T because...

1. They still drop the ball too much.
2. Augsburg has a freaky pass offense, and who knows?
3. SJU always finds some way to make us hurt in the end.
4. The 2-minute offense still takes 9 minutes.

I'll certainly welcome other ideas/commentary.
If the human brain were so simple that we could fully understand it...we would be so simple that we couldn't.
