How close was that last play to being a touchdown? I was at the opposite endzone.

A couple of yards.  Stupid throw.  You gotta hit the endzone.  No point in catching it short of the endzone.
So much better to have quickly thrown it away if no-one was wide open in the end zone or on the sideline...or even spiked the ball.  Then you have one play left, you can huddle up, you can run something tricky...anything but a desperation pitch to a guy with lots of traffic between him and the endzone.

Would have expected that their Freshman QB would have made bad plays instead of our Junior QB.   Anyone out there that would not trade all three of our QB's for Aakre.  Has a lot to learn and I'm not sure how strong his arm is because he never threw long once that I can remember, but seems to have good legs and a good head on his shoulders?

Yeah I was impressed with Aakre.  He should develop into a good QB.

Hindsight is a wonderful gift to have, but here is something that is bugging me.  If you have as much confidence in your defense as we should have...considering how the first four games went for us and Bethel, wouldn't your overall strategy for yesterday have been to play it conservative whenever you got within FG range and not take any chances that would result in TO's or missed opportunities.  This approach executed properly should have given us a couple more fieldgoals to go with the TD and the one we had?  I mean, I was hoping for a monkeystomp to get some revenge, but would have been more than happy with a 2 point win.

I was hoping for the Monkeystomp too and am more than happy with a 5 point win.

Johnson has already been quoted that Aakre has "Witzel like qualities". Johnson has a proven track record of using QB or RB for 4 years. The first year may be rocky, but then he has the horses to hitch the wagon to for 3 more years.

It'll be interesting to see which direction the coaching staff goes regarding a starting quarterback the rest of the season.  Now that any potential for a Johnnie playoff game has been all but eliminated will Joe Boyle or Michael Crees or even another backup receive some playing time?

This question just doesn't want to answer itself...

Actually, and Keith and I discuss this in the podcast for tomorrow, SJU isn't eliminated yet necessarily. They still play Augsburg and Carleton. But they need Concordia to pick up two losses and end up in a crazy multiple way tie, or three losses to finish completely behind.

Pat,
Your kind words are appreciated but if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck then it usually turns out to be a duck  ;)

Maybe not mathematically eliminated, but this team is not playoff caliber.

ETBU may have uncovered that in the first weekend.  ETBU goes to HSU this week.

Not to put too fine a point on freebird's response to FightingCoBB, but let me ask if you had Vanderbilt and Penn State in your Top 15 in DI? Also, I bet you're not at all surprised by the play of the Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots. This discussion has been had many times, but suffice it to say, when you establish a reputation over many years, it usually sticks until you prove otherwise. If you can think of a better way, let me know. As they say, "Round up the usual suspects."

It's not as if there is a lot of information out there about new recruits and back-ups moving into starting positions.  Have not run into any D3 scouting service out there.

Carleton beat Olaf.....  I quit.

on a side note... the hot carls forgot to point the eagle towards carleton after turning it.  its still pointing at St. Olaf.  You're killin me Carleton.

I'm pretty sure I saw the Eagle get turned to point directly at Carleton after the game and it looked like someone from the D3football crew (Pat?) was there to witness this as well http://www.pictureprints.net/albums.php?gallery=2265&page=9.  Always with the inferiority complex, you guys kill me.

I saw the eagle pointed appropriately as well. On a side note, after the end of the current losing streak the knights only trail by 4 in the all time series.
