As far as the QB goes, I say start putting in Sam Verschaetse, Kevin Abbas, Ron Gabrielseon or Brock Welch.  Sam V played last year some and seemed to do pretty well.

Really? SJU is out of title contention and this board suddenly wants to ignore the rest of the teams in the league and turn to baseball? I can only imagine the space this "debate" would be getting if the Johnnies were still monkey stomping people...but I'm certainly not surprised by the antics.

That said, I'm disappointed more Hot Carl and Auggie Tech posters haven't come out of the woodworks to pimp their teams before the showdown that could very well decide the conference title. I'd love to be at this game...but I'll be up north with some Cobber alums instead.

CC to Ritz - Preach on, brotha! Send all the foreigners back to Russia to play with their frozen sticks where I don't ever have to see them again!
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

That was tiring, and I only had to read it.  The monotonous drivel you venomously spout is laughingly dreadful.

* SJU is out of contention and it falls to Johnnies to maintain the board's energy and discuss the other teams?  I can see that your unhealthy hatred for all things Johnnie poisons your life, but this post of yours borders on derangement.

* Johnnie supporters find the well-worn topics of poor offense and lack-luster offensive coaching to be, uh... well worn, so they turn to other topics and you spy "antics?"  Antics to what end?  To distract from the previous 200 Johnnie posts concerning poor offense and lack-luster coaching?  Those dastardly Johnnies are hiding in plain sight, the deviants!

* You're "disappointed" with the CAR and AUG posters, but they can be forgiven it seems since it is really SJU supporters that should be discussing that game.  Where's your insight on the corn-cobbing GAC will receive this weekend, courtesy of PacLu and without the benefit of Vaseline?  Nothing from you but spite and bitterness.

WW, TDT has the CA routine down pretty well (he has to do something well, I guess), but you really take the "class" out of "classless a$$hole."  Your small, bitter mind and anti-Johnnie bigotry undermines your ability to even be classless.  Maybe TDT is available for lessons.

Looking forward to a good game between Carly and Auggy this weekend.

Should be a close game if Carleton is able to keep Winford and the other receivers in check.  Carleton definitely has one of the better secondarys in the conference which should help.  It will get quite frustrating for them if they are not able slow down auggy's wide receiver screen attack.

Offensively look for carleton to run the ball this week.  They need to control the time of possession which for once I think they are able to do this year.  Last week their best drive of the day was to start the second half when they went 15 plays and took a lot of time off the clock.  They didn't score on the drive, but it was fun to see them move the ball up the field without any plays longer than 15 yards.

Prediction:  Carleton rushes for 150+ yards.  I see a little trickery that was so common in Ramlers first few years but hasn't been needed yet this year.

Winford tears it up like usual, but the D will dig in and hold him to 1 touchdown.  And yes I consider a good day defensively against winford is holding him to 8 catches for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Final Score:

Carleton 24  Augsburg 17

Congrats to the Johnnie golf team on winning the MIAC title Monday. Always nice to finish 28 strokes ahead of the Gusties. Hopefully the Johnnies will win their third straight national title this spring.

Two new judges named in the First District yesterday. One is a Tommie, the other an Ole.

Piper fans making the trip to Collegeville this Saturday, please join us for the Stiftungsfestivities before the game. We are located in the parking lot above the scoreboard end of the field. The grills are going by 11:00 a.m.. Bring a culinary delight to share if you like.

Here is one. Have been reading for a couple of years...
Played CB at Carleton from 2003-2006, I now work full time/grad student in Michigan.

This will be the only game I attend this year and potentially for years to come, very glad that my Knights are having their best season in over a decade (made plane reservations before the season started)!

Carleton's offense is dangerous because of Frank and Gardner's 1-2 punch, arguably the best receiving pair in the conference. Frank has the size and hands to be a match up problem for every team. Gardner had the best break away speed on the team my senior year, but his hands weren't quite as good (don't know how he has progressed). Since you have to respect the pass at all times, this obviously opens up room for the ground game, and Carleton has a solid pair of TBs. Henfling wasn't a stud when I was there, but he always had the essential QB poise and calmness (plus he has the weapons).

3 three year, and 1 second year starter in the secondary. Ziller should be all conference if not more. Hanks at DE is a mad man, goes 100% all the time, never played with anyone like that.

But Carleton's biggest weapon is Ramler. An incredible coach and motivator and just a great guy in general. He is personable to every player on his team and has as much fun as anyone playing. And he can recruit better than Brann (and that is all Brann could do well) If Carleton is able to hold on to him they will be a fixture at the top of the MIAC. But something tells me the Johnnies might make a play at him once the old man finally hangs up his whistle.

When I was there, though we were never deep as other schools, we always had solid talent, but we just could not win the close games. It seems that Ramler is finally getting these guys to finish and not make deathly mistakes.

I expect this to be Carleton's largest home crowd in a very long time. I believe the largest home crowd I played in front of was about 3,000 senior year HC against Hamline.

Go Knights.

None of the Carleton fans are really talking about Matt Frank's injury. (I believe most of you have said you weren't there.) Wonder if he can even suit up this weekend.

At any rate, I posted my feature story from Saturday's Carleton-St. Olaf game.

The MIAC has the privilege of seeing the biggest game that doesn't include SJU in maybe 10 or 20 years this weekend. It's #21 vs. #32 in the nation and both are MAJOR surprises. But instead of looking at the big picture, the Johnnie faithful come out of the woodwork to discuss moves (the cynical part of Wonka would argue divert attention) the Twins should make when they don't play again for, what, 5 months?

I'm a Gustie fan who is more interested in this game than what will take place out west on Saturday. It could be a historic day with national tournament implications between two cellar-dwellers. And I'm shocked to say I actually like one of Pat's projects. It's a HUGE game. What's so hard to understand here, Oz?

Thanks for the insight, KnightRyder! Can I ask you to post again after the game, since I can't be there to check it out? Then you can go back to lurking :)

I'd check in with my Auggie source for info...but Frank and I have to dominates the lanes again tonight.

If Frank can play, he will. A quiet man by nature, but was arguably the most competitive player on the team when I was there. I loved going against him 1 v 1 in practice because I knew I was always going to get his best no matter what. Besides, he isn't that fast to begin with, so I am sure Carleton can still utilize his size and hands.

But your article highlighted some of what I said.

And the team believes that. Just ask McDonald: "It's a belief and trust, trust in each other. We really trust each other now and believe we're going to win every game."

That trust was not there when I played, people tried to overcompensate because there wasn't that assurance in every player on the field. My senior year we were on the brink of setting the program off, but too much of the old regime was still there, we were still used to losing, I think we lost 5 of our 7 in single digits and were leading in each of those games at some point.

Ramler is what this program needed and his success should be highly emphasized. He is able to motivate and recruit at an institution that prides itself on academics.  Carleton's academics are on par with the Ivy's, and school is very very intense.

He made practice fun; it is hard to believe that I looked forward to practice even after pulling an all nighter for school.  If you weren't one of 'Brann's Boys,' which I wasn't, he made you feel worthless. That is why he was never successful and left as soon as he could, and has done nothing at Beloit (if he is still there) he was a pitiful motivator and coach. Ramler makes every one feel like they are a part of the team and they play a role.

Not really saying anything related to the injury as I don't really know much if anything about it and I'm trying to be guardedly optomistic.  I was at the St. Olaf game and saw the play where he first injured it (a great leaping sideline catch) and saw him go off the field not moving that arm.  He did come back to play again, but then seemed to reaggrivate it later (the play he stayed down on).  At the time my thoughts were that if absolutely needed he probably could have stayed in and they were just being cautious, but I don't have any way of knowing for sure.  After the game at the eagle I saw him keeping his arm somewhat immobilized, but he didn't have a sling or any wraps/bandages or anything on it, which makes me think it's not too terrilbly serious.  With no medical experience besides having too many injuries myself I'd guess that it's a shoulder sprain of some sort, and depending on the degree of it, can probably be played with albiet with a fair amount of pain.  Because of the magnitude of the game, etc. I'd wager to bet that he plays (he did come back and play at the end of last year after a spleen injury in camp).

The knights still have weapons without him in Gardner, some solid young recievers, Ramey (TE/FB) up the seams, and their running game, but without Frank they do lose a great go-to option, and some potentially huge plays.  It will be interesting to see what happens on Saturday, especially with word of some possible injuries for the Auggies as well.  I think when healthy the knights are good enough to beat anyone in the MIAC this year, but I'm still worried about consitancy a little, although they've been pretty solid so far this year.  I'm really excited to see the game saturday.

Pat, great story, are any of you guys going to be around for the tilt this Sat?

Go knights!

I am glad that Ramler is finding success at Carleton.  He coached at SJU my senior season, and he is a great guy.  He had a rough go at Heidelberg, so it is great to see him turning things around now that he's a head coach!
