Dear Bennie,  If you would rather talk about hockey, I'm sure there are many options available to you.  This is D3 football in 2008 where St. Thomas has beaten Concordia on the road and the Cobbs have beaten your team at home.

Dear AO,

Last time I checked, Northwestern was not in the MIAC. It really is too bad that you couldn't get admitted to Bethel, St. Olaf or now St. Thomas so that you could be something other that a bandwagon jumping wanna be... Let me know when Northwestern beats the Johnnies at home! 8)
I believe the Johnnies would have to make the playoffs for that to happen in the next decade, and with the way things are going in Collegeville, I don't see that happening.

I really not that familiar with Northwestern. What is their history/record in the playoffs?

Old time fan, thanks for the reminder to voters. Much appreciated. :)

Well, one more day until the trip to the Republic of Boulder. Probably won't see any John McCain signs there. ;)

AO

This is the first year Northwestern is eligible for the NCAA playoffs, and we do have a reasonable shot to get a bid.

This is also the MIAC board. I'm sure theres lively conversation to be had on the UMAC board.  ;)

Let us again keep Br. Dietrich in our prayers.
Amen.

Thanks to all who pass along the updates and provided the caring bridge link. I met Br. Dietrich when he was a fresh-faced novice, stopping by Fr. Job Dittberner's U.S. history class in the fall of '72. His love for SJU has been constant and his steady hand as president served so many students and alums so well.

With respect to schools, one can not go wrong with any school in the MIAC.  I just don't know how students relate too well to each other or get to know each other well when everyone leaves on the weekends like they do at UST.  It's a good school but it seems quite impersonal and antiseptic to me; I am sure some people like that though.

As an Auggie, I think that there is a bit of this with all of the city schools - especially, the closer you get to one of the two downtowns (possibly 3, I'll explain in a bit!) Speaking as an Auggie, many of the students come from the metro area. For most, that means, especially late on Friday night, or right at 2-3 when classes are getting out on Friday, that the drive home will probably be only 15 to 20 minutes (obviously, depending on traffic!) I think that the UST(d) student base also follows this model. So, a student "running" home for the weekend is not a terribly difficult task.  The further out you go, often the further it is for students to make it a quick trip home for the weekends. Growing up in NFLD, with a dad at Olaf, I think there was a lot better weekend population on campus, as the drive from NFLD to the cities is a bit longer. I would wager life is similar at St. Ben's & St. John's.  The schools that I would be interested in are GAC (as, from what I understand, a lot of their student base comes from SW MN, and Concordia.  I would wager that the two mini-downtowns (Mankato and Fargo-Moorehead) provide an effect similar to those of Augsburg, St. Thomas, Hamline, Bethel, Macalester, etc. However, probably without as dramatic an effect. Now, I'm not suggesting that all of the "city" schools are equally vacant on the weekends. Rather, I would guess that their "suitcase" rates are, on average, slightly higher than the Olafs, Carletons, Johns and Bens of the MIAC.

I am interested in feedback on this issue.  I can only speak for the Auggie and somewhat Olaf perspective. I have NO idea on the other schools. local experts greatly appreciated!

Out of order, I'll show you out of order! You don't know what out of order is, Mr Task! I'd show you but I'm too old, I'm too tired, and I'm too f----n blind. If I were the man I was 5 years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to this place. Out of order, who the hell do you think you're talking to?

Best wishes to Br. Dietrich.

As a non-catholic, can one of you give me a Reader's Digest explanation of how a Br.  (I am assuming Brother) and a Fr. (again, an assumption of Friar?) differentiate, and how a Father, Priest, Monk, Etc. fit into this hierarchy or if some are the same things?  Again, I don't need massive paragraphs (I reserve the right to take up an entire page with my posts!) but just want to know the basics (tired of ignorance!)

Thanks!

Watch me get this wrong, but in my defense I was a Methodist when I attended SJU and only became a Catholic three years ago.  And if I get it wrong, it's the surest way to get someone to say what is right (so in that respect I'm still doing a good service).

A 'Father' (Fr) is a priest, ordained to hold mass and lead the flock.

A 'Brother' (Br) is a monk, qualified to do lots of other important monk stuff (for instance scholarship) that doesn't include holding mass.

Can I keep my membership card?

A couple pages back Duffman noticed a non-commented on reference to OAS being in an eligible bachelor benefit with Hoag.  Missing from this conversation was the obvious; OAS used to reference a Mrs. OAS that was a CC star at Mac.  Unless this is one of those new "eligible bachelor" deals where married guys can participate....something has happened to our friend OAS and his marriage.  I hope that is not the case.  If it is I hope that OAS's commitment to those of us clowns on this board did not cause the split.

AO- Go away.  If NW makes the playoffs (due to playing a weaker schedule than Melrose) you will get a chance to see how far away from any level of D3 success your club truly is.

Just because Mrs. 105 is a Dutchman doesn't mean you have to defend them  :D  I would never defend the BBE Jaguars because they are horrible :o

That is very sad about Br. Dietrich.  He's an awfully nice man.  A Brother "BR." is someone who is not authorized to perform an of the sacraments -- Baptism, Marriage, Extreme Unction, etc.  -- unlike a Priest (FR.) who is.  Nonetheless, a brother is someone who has made permanent vows to serve Christ and be a member of a particular order -- Benedictine, Norbertine, Dominican, Franciscan, Jesuit.  They go through the novitiate and all of the discerning steps that a priest member goes through but they have no priest-like authority.  Even a Deacon can administer some sacraments.  Brothers are simply people like me who commit their lives to the church, Christ and a particular order.  They use their lay skills -- lawyer, administrator, doctor, etc. -- to serve Christ, the Church and the order.  Nuns or "sisters" are similar.  Brothers are highly educated, usually, but they may not wish to go through another 4-8 years of study to be a priest.  Many times, brothers, have lived "regular" lay-person lives for awhile prior to becoming a brother.  All brothers, priests and Deacons that reside in a monastery are called "monks."  Hope it helps.
