It's slower than a Kiwi on his way to the jobs office around here.  So I'll take the opportunity of livening things up and break a previous pledge of no more Aussie Rules posts this season.

Trying to deliver the coup de grace to the MIAC list, Oz? ???  Will we see you before halftime of the game tomorrow? ;)

So.....here's a debate point. Given what's coming into the area (snowy, wet & sloppy), who does the weather favor in this week's matchups:

Carleton @ Concordia
Augsburg @ SJU
Bethel @ St. Thomas
Gustavus @ St. Olaf
Macalester @ Hamline

Thoughts?

I see all of these games being close like seems to be the norm this year.

They are sure yapping it up over on the UMAC board with the 7th ranked West Region team northwestern.  Way to go AO.   :D :o :-*

And I see you helped them to get to 18 total pages in 10 years  :o

With so many varying opinions and controversial subjects, how can one stay away?
I don't think this board would have as many posters if St. John's or Bethel were beating everyone by 30.  If you looked closely you'd notice that a Martin Luther offensive line came on the board (without identifying himself as such) in hope that the Knights would play the Eagles close as Martin Luther had run over a few teams of their own.  We promptly crushed them.  There are some NWC fans who post things on a facebook group, but they don't really talk about the opposition at all.  We have probably one of the only student sections in the world where they paint their faces and scream and yell without saying a bad word against the other team or the refs.  Of course there isn't much to complain about when you win by 30.

It's also still unclear as if beating St. Thomas will get us into the playoffs as there are a few other deserving one loss and undefeated teams in pool B.

I really think the weather has to favor the traditional powers this weekend (cord, sju, bethel) as the running game becomes more important.  The Tech tigers will also find this out the hard way as the Wayzata Trojans come to town saturday night.

I hope you still remember what it feels like to get beat by 30 so you don't go into shock when your season ends that way. :D

With Eden Prairie done for this season will coach Grant be on hand in collegville tomorrow?  Maybe show up for a great burger and some kool aid?

Yes, he in red and his wife in blaze orange.  Look for his first hire to be little brother and All-American TE Danny.

Ahhhhhhhhhrg...  A shot right through the brain pan.

My intent is to be there at game kick-off tomorrow.  It depends on my timely recovery from that vicious barb.  :D

Concordia has an advantage obviously. They just lost a home game last weekend, it's senior day, it's cold, it's wet. They played in crap conditions for Dickinson St and St Thomas. They'll be ready.

SJU already has the homefield adv. as it is.

Gustavus plays in crap quite often in St Peter but I like St. Olaf tomorrow.

Hamline is thirsty for a win.

BTW...currently 29* and basically in blizzard conditions. Otta be a fun day.

I would say that it's a little naive to rule out the Tommies in a bad weather game. They handled themselves fairly well at Concordia and are by all accounts a really good rushing team.

Blah Blah Tommies suck, USTD, etc.... Say what you want about St. Thomas Football but it's on the rise and with some help** the post season is still in reach.

From the the SID's weekly blog:

"--St. Thomas will get NCAA automatic berth if (drum roll, please...) it beats Bethel AND if St. John's loses to Augsburg, AND if Augsburg loses to Bethel, AND if Gustavus loses to St. Olaf, and if Carleton loses once more. If all that happens, UST would be in multiple tie, and with SJU knocked out due to 2007 NCAA trip, Tommies win three-way tie-breaker with Gustavus and Carleton.

--As for Augsburg and Bethel, they are alive to get a share of the championship with two wins, and a lot of help. But the Royals and Auggies appear to lose any tie-breakers to take an automatic NCAA berth.

If Augsburg beats St. John's and Bethel AND Gustavus loses last two, AND Concordia loses to Carleton and beats Gusties, AND St. John's beat Carleton, AND St. Thomas beats Bethel, There's a five-way tie at 5-3... SJU drops out and among last four it looks to me like UST would take that particular tie-breaker.

Bethel would be bounced from a multiple tie because it went to the NCAA playoffs in 2007."

I feel like the first scenario in particular is very possible up to the point where the Gusties have to fall to Olaf, I just don't see that happening.

Pat Coleman:  "I see Augsburg over St. John's."

Choo!  Choo!  Drive that Auggie train!  You've got the spirit of the MIAC bandwagon down!  We all knew you were a Johnnie fan at heart...

Celebrating a decade of Auggie Excellence:
1998:  St. John's 19, Augsburg 13
1999:  St. John's 55, Augsburg 0
2000:  St. John's 40, Augsburg 7
2001:  St. John's 48, Augsburg 14
2002:  St. John's 35, Augsburg 7
2003:  St. John's 63, Augsburg 9
2004:  St. John's 38, Augsburg 13
2005:  St. John's 56, Augsburg 16
2006:  St. John's 60, Augsburg 0
2007:  St. John's 62, Augsburg 7

Yes, that's right: over the past decade, the most points the Auggies have scored against St. John's is 16.  Over the same 10 games, the Johnnies have scored at least 19 in each game.  Augsburg's best scoring total wouldn't beat the Johnnies' worst.

I know, I know... Different year, different teams, Auggies Rool, Johnnies Drool, etc., etc.  Still, that is a huge chasm that Augsburg needs to overcome.

A quick aside: Augsburg has allowed 325 (!!!) and 354 (!!! x2!) rushing yards the past two weeks.  It's not like Augsburg was playing Mount Union or a vintage Springfield or Augustana team--they were playing the Tommies and the Gusties!  Against those two teams, St. John's allowed 144 and 60 rushing yards.

I was only half joking earlier this year when I jumped on the Augsburg bandwagon.  I wouldn't mind seeing them do well and Winford is a heck of a ballplayer.  Augsburg has represented the MIAC well the past couple of years when they knocked off Wartburg, much better than St. John's did against Central last season.  It would be f'ing WACKY to see Augsburg in the NCAA football playoffs.  Still, this is a deeply flawed football team.  Their 3 losses this year have come to the 3 first place MIAC teams they've played.

Maybe Pat's right.  Maybe the Auggies will come into Collegeville with a banged up Royce Winford (He's a little nicked up, right?  I mean, he's played every play of the season on both sides of the ball, right?) and beat a first place St. John's team that needs this win in their last home game of the year to keep alive their legitimate chances of a conference title and faint hopes of a playoff berth.  Oh yeah, and St. John's had a bye week to mend and prepare for this game.  Maybe that happens.  If it does, I promise you I will be on this board as soon as I get home from the game to man up.  But nothing about this season or past seasons gives me much of a reason to be worried.

So what you're sayin' here is that the Tommies still have a shot, right.....?   ???

At least they can keep the students interested. That's more than can be said for the past 10 years.  ;)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
