GREAT game in Northfield.  Oles win in 2OTs.  D-line was outstanding today.  Nick Tolen is a scary man.  He manhandled GAC's guards and centers.  I was incredibly frustrated with the officiating today.  A DB for gac pushes a st olaf receiver out of the way and turns around for the interception, no call.  The officials called st olaf for defensive pass interference while the defender is holding his arms out to the side with open arms, their legs were about to tangle, and they fell over.  Clearly unintentional.  St. Olaf outplayed GAC in my opinion, and came away with a great win.  Haberman is much improved at this point in the season.

I wasn't at the game, but this seems a little much. The Gusties controlled the clock (31:30-28:30), were outgained just 342-334 and had identical first downs.

What's that leave? Turnovers. Gustavus had 3 to Olaf's 2...but two of GAC's came on picks in the end zone. Those are killers.

Were the Oles a better team? Perhaps...but the numbers would seem to suggest an even game across the board. And it would be easy to argue that GAC mistakes at crucial times were the difference, though the Oles obviously played a part in that, I'm sure.

I'm not so much upset we lost...I'm upset that Schoeny's last game is now meaningless because both the Cobbers and Gusties choked. It could have been a spectacular finish.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

RE: retagent -  Carleton has NEVER beaten st. Johns.  I would think that SJU would be the favorite.  Going by that statistic I think it's easy to see who the favorite would be.  Are you trying to put the Johnnies in the underdog role?  When's the last time that was ever the case?

Gagliardi did say he would retire if he ever lost to Carleton a few years back.

Seems like the Johnnie's qb is coming around.... Just looking at stats he seems to be pretty mobile being that he had a good rushing game against the Auggies.

A couple of observations and a question from yesterday's game.

I thought we did a real good job on Winford, even though he had 3 TD passes.  He was on a pace to catch over 100 balls this year and was already over 1,000 yards receiving.  Yet we held him to 6 catches.  Al-Hameed also came in with 63 receptions for 678 yards and we held him to only 3 catches for 27 yards.

My question.  As good a passer as Jordan Berg is, in their offense, wouldn't you want a QB that could run a bit so there are two running threats out of the backfield?  Berg seems very immobile.  I would think that the way they spread out a defense there must be some good gaps at times.  Berg only has a gross running yardage of 70 yards in 9 games, to go with his losses of 126 yards (presumably most through sacks) for a net loss of 56 yards.  He is the only starting QB in the MIAC with a net loss on the ground.

I promise you I will answer this question after next week's Bethel game!
Out of order, I'll show you out of order! You don't know what out of order is, Mr Task! I'd show you but I'm too old, I'm too tired, and I'm too f----n blind. If I were the man I was 5 years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to this place. Out of order, who the hell do you think you're talking to?

LAB, I was surprised and disappointed to not see you in Collegeville for such a big Augsburg game.  Is everything OK?

I was unable to take in yesterday's tilt due to work conflicts. However, looking at the stats I am wondering if some of you that were there can answer a question for me.  I see that Jordan threw 2 pics while Boyle threw one.  Was that the difference in the game? I know it was knotted at 7s going into half, so it seems, just by that, that it was a fairly even day yesterday. However, being -1 in the turnover category can often spell disaster when playing a solid team like St. Johns.  Was that the case yesterday?  It also sounds like the weather/wind caused some havoc on some of the passes (judging by the great story on the Johnniefootball page.)  Being that the Auggies like to throw it more than most, was that a hindrance more for the Auggies than for the Johnnies?

I'm in no way suggesting the Johnnies did not deserve to win. Again, I wasn't there. I am just trying to gauge how the Auggies played, if the score was as close (in reality, not just in numbers) as the final outcome indicated, and if the weather compromised the Auggie game plan going in.  Any info would be appreciated!  Congrats to the Johnnies. Next Saturday should be quite the event! Good luck to both, stay safe, stay healthy!

TC-
Everything's fine. Disappointed to be out in the real world these days where Saturdays are not always a given to be a free day! I really wanted to make this game, as I love the atmosphere at Clemens, and meeting all of you EVIL St. Johns fans! (HA!)  I was just stuck in a work conflict that I could do nothing about!

Congrats to your squad yesterday. Sounds like an exciting match-up next weekend!

LAB,

All 3 picks were converted into points, so yes the -1 did hurt the Auggies. The wind was a factor, but I really think the new look Johnnie defense had more of a factor than the wind IMHO

We look like an underdog to me.  On paper this will be the best offense we've faced?  Henflig completing 2/3 of his passes with a 3/1 TD/Int ratio.  3 wideouts with almost 2,000 receiving yards between them and 700 receiving yards out of the backfield.  That's five people that figure into the receiving attack.  Not a ton of rushing yards but pretty good yards per carry.  While the defense has given up a lot of points in the last five games, they should be able to hold the Johnnies to 2-3 TD's.  There are 8 seniors in the starting 11 on defense so they should be sky high to beat us for the first time in their four years.  Has a bit of foreshadowing of last year's Central game.

The only two things that look a bit opportunistic is the o'line looks pretty small on paper, if those are true weights and the QB does not appear to scramble much.  So far the scrambling/running QB's have given the Johnnies the most trouble.

So unless I'm way off base we should be the underdog.  At least to me on paper Carleton looks like a lot better team.  But you never know.  John may pull out all the stops to teach the young pup a lesson.  We've shown about 0% creativity so far this year.  Pulling out the SOL play yesterday may be a sign that he's been holding his big guns in his holster.

Never thought I would see Carleton v St. John's in the last week for all the marbles.

I am guessing it will probably be a very good game. However, I believe Carleton has to be the slight favorite playing at home with the best offense and QB in the conference. Not that it matters, but Carleton is only 2 plays away from being undfeated (still cringe thinking of the GAC loss)

But I expect to see St. John's best effort, plus they have been in this position many times before, and sometimes experience is the most important element in a game of this magnitude (though they did lose to Bethel in 06 in the same situation).

I don't think history will have much of a role in the game, Carleton has proven the last 2 seasons that they can play with St. Johns.

The O-Line is pretty small, but they are quick, athletic, and strong which fits the spread system.

The D has given up a lot of points but they are pretty good at creating turnovers. And watch out for Ziller at SS - All-American - 80 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 picks, 5 forced fumbles, 8 pass break ups, 1 blocked punt returned for TD, D3 team of the week 3 time this season.

If St. Johns can stop the Carleton O they win. But I like Carleton's chances in a higher scoring game.

I'm watching the Vikings as I head out the door to work and I stay just long enough to see yet another Ferotte interception, this one returned for 60 yards and a TD.  Safe to that Tavaris Jackson was perfect storm for Ferotte?

EDIT: And then I stop to resolve a dispute between the girls and I get to see a punt returned for a TD.  About 3 minutes and the Vikings blow it.  Vikings Suck! Vikings Suck!
