Quote from: justadad on November 10, 2008, 07:36:54 AMThe real performer in Saturdays game was Russell Gliadon.  Play back the Augsburg punts into the wind and then Russells.  Without looking up the stats the Johnnie punting game was marvelous.  When you force Air Auggie to make lenghty drives on almost every series the Johnnie defense will get the stop.

Except for his 8 yard punt on 4th-and-5 from the Augsburg 43 in the second quarter, right?  I mean, that kick wasn't THAT sweet.

How do you know Jimmy & Co. have no faith in Boyle?  They didn't go for it on that 4th down.  When has that situation ever NOT been 4 down territory for the Johnnies?

To answer your earlier question, LAB, I don't think Berg's picks were the difference in the game.  While the first half was certainly even, it felt like the Johnnies were about to assert their dominance a couple of times in the second half.  But every time they went up by a couple of scores and had momentum the Auggies (well, Berg and especially Winford) would answer with a big play.  The flip side to being aggressive and taking chances, especially against a good defense like St. John's, is there are going to be some mistakes and turnovers.  The Auggies were good enough to keep the game reasonably close, but they never seriously threatened in the second half.

Jimmy & company should have faith in the QB's when they earn it.  Even Boyle has no faith with his passing.  On his rushing TD he had a reciever wide open but was afraid to throw the ball while going to his left.  To his credit he did take some hits and always came back for more.  He was not afraid of the pitch even after turning it over.  I agree the Auggies never seemed a threat in the second half.

Whew.  I cannot believe the Johnnies are in a position to win the MIAC this year.  This season has been a crazy ride, for sure.

I am terrified of the Knights.  They's given us fits the past few years, and that was when they were a below average team.  I think the Johnnies will get a tough game.  Should be a doozy.  Pretty neat when it all comes down to the last game, though!

Do you think we'll stay with the 3-4 next week?

You guys are on par with the perenial power Wartburg.  Buena Vista had the deal locked and then Beaver Nation folded.  It would be interesting to see you and the Wartburg Knights square off in the first round of the playoffs.

I have not seen the Knights in quite a while.  I've been camping the past few years when we've played them, so I have no idea what to expect.  I'll do a bit a research and have a preview posted on JF.com in a few days.

Just 1 thing tonite.  The hit by #13 where he bulldozed the "blocking/chipping" RB on Auggie Tech's 1st drive was one of the sickest hits I've ever seen in Collegeville.  Man that was a thing of beauty.  Love the energy and tenacity we saw from him all day long.  Clark Jr. (TC preferred moniker) is here to stay and had a helluva game Saturday...

TDT,

How about during the return of Stifter's pick when #13 launched Winford two rows into the SJU sideline  ;D

They didn't mention that on the radio broadcast but he did when we talked to him that night.  He's as proud of his blocking as anything else.

If they insist on calling Stanton a defensive end in their new scheme, wouldn't it technically be a 4-3 that they primarily ran on Saturday?  It looked like #13 spent about an equal amount of time in coverage and in the backfield--it was almost a 3-3-5 stack with an extra strong safety in the game.  I guess the name doesn't matter so much as the results and I think they'll have a hard time getting Stanton off the field at this point.

Hey Duff, you think you can just saunter back on the bandwagon or what?

It was more of a 3-4...I could see Stanton getting more playing time this week, especially with the injury situation on the D-Line...plus Bohlman or Sharpe rushing from end can be pretty tough for a D to deal with...Schumacher was an unsung hero in the win over the Auggies...he totally abused the right tackle,  it was similiar to the way McNamara totally ran circles around the Monmouth tackle...

Should be an interesting game at Carleton...anyone know what the field is like?

looks like the Johnnies and Carlies aren't the only ones playing for a championship on Saturday according to the St. Thomas S.I.D.  The Ramsey County Title is up for grabs at Reynolds field on Saturday after the Tommies eliminated Bethel from contention.  This and a terrific potshot at the johnnies can be found at  http://www.tommiesports.com/ftbl/news/Blog21_11-9.html

For those of you who are afraid you would come away with herpes or worse if you visit the USTD website here is the quote:

"Speaking of records (sarcasm coming), with Morse throwing two TD passes, St. Thomas set an NCAA single-game record for TD passes thrown by two or more guys wearing unconventional jersey numbers. (The old record was set at home in 1990 by St. John's when its 11th-string and 12th-string quarterbacks, wearing jerseys 24.5 and 21.3, threw late-game TD passes. Johnnie fans fondly recall that game when the running-up-the-score tradition was born)."

Don't think I would judge this a "potshot" and certainly not a "terrific" potshot.  More of a reminder of what we consider a good day. :D

Well, the Tommies are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their last outright Minnesota championship, and 18 years since they shared a title in Minnesota, but hey, it has been only four years since the Tommies won the Ramsey County crown, so celebrate what you can get-- and even then, I would imagine the coaching staff at Concordia-St. Paul may have something to say about the mythical title.  Has Northwestern ever won a Ramsey County crown?  I can only imagine the buzz on Lydia and Snelling about the possibility of winning a non-UMAC or non-NCCAA honor!

And while I appreciate Gene's humor, he is dead wrong on two counts:  1.)  the Tommies beat the Johnnies in 1990 25-14 at UST, so his stat is off (but given that it has been so long since the Toms did end up in the winner's column against the Johnnies, the mistake, I am sure, is inadvertent); and 2.) the Johnnies have been running up the score since way before 1990.  You would have thought we had all the tradition and success of Bethel if we've only been running it up since 1990!  ;D
