Cant help but wonder what things would look like now if SJU had been able to recruit Henfling from their own backyard.

EV-W folks aren't welcome at SJU  ;)

Thanks - this is the closest thing I've found.

I saw on the ESPN crawl that Neshek is expected to miss the entire 2009 season. I hope this isn't breaking news for the Minnesota contingent, although it breaks my heart.

Don't they offer English courses at NW?

But the awards on based on a season of play, not one week.

This are classic!

Is Henfling really being considered the favorite to win the MIAC MVP?!?!  I just assumed it was going to Royce Winford.  He has 88 catches for 1,110 yards and 16 TDs AND leads his team with 4 interceptions (which is also 4th in the MIAC).  By comparison, Matt Frank has 79/892/11.

Henfling is 236 of 351 (67.2%) for 2,814 yards with a 29/9 TD/INT ratio.
Compare to:  201 of 301 (66.8%) for 2,424 yards with a 27/10 TD/INT ratio.

And to think, people were calling for Kofoed's head last season...

I didn't realize how transcendent Henfling's season has been until I compared him to the rest of the MIAC this season (here).  He's had a fine year, but it looks like a down season for MIAC QBs.  I'd still vote Winford, but Henfling wouldn't be an embarrassing choice at all.

Tough comparison here.  Frank played only the first half against MAC.  Missed  another 2 games with a separated shoulder.  (last quarter against Olaf, entire game against augsburg, first 3 quarters against Gustavus).  Those stats look even more impressive when you consider they are really over a total of 6 1/2 games.

Winford still gets my vote for MVP as of today if I had one.  Playing both sides of the ball like he does is ridiculous.  That kid is a beast.   Still wish we would have seen a Frank/Winford matchup.  That would have been fun to watch.

The point is, it doesn't matter, Northwestern's schedule is statistically tougher than the two other pool B hopefuls for the third bid.

Again, no-- according to the NCAA's Strength of Schedule, sure-- but nobody has ever held the NCAA as being the definitive answer with regard to math. For what it is worth, Massey says otherwise.  Northwestern's Massey schedule strength comes in at a pudgy 202, with LaGrange, Huntingdon and Wesley at worst coming in at 196. By way of contrast, Hamline's 34th ranked SOS in Massey brings up the rear in the MIAC.  Overall, Massey gives Northwestern a rank of 106, while CWRU comes in at 52, LaGrange at 70, and Huntingdon at 82.  For more perspective on what this means, that ranking would put Northwestern a step above Hamline (119) but way below Bethel (50) in the MIAC.

While Massey isn't a part of the NCAA's selection materials, do you really think they don't take such evidence into account?

I didn't see that in the we win with no brochure, but after 30 years of wondering maybe the answer was out in the open the whole time.

I knew Frank had missed some time, I just didn't know it was that much time.  The obvious flipside to that argument is, how valuable could he be if he missed that much time?  Not only has Winford played virtually every offensive down for the Auggies, he also played a substantial amount on defense, too.

As far as the Carleton turnaround being a factor in the MVP race, it's the same semantic argument that MVP voters deal with in baseball every year.  I personally don't think that team performance should have much bearing on individual awards.  Others may disagree.  Also, Augsburg has had an impressive turnaround since 2006, too, if you're into that.

Really, this has given me a chance to take a closer look at the numbers Carleton's pass offense has put up, and I was pleasantly surprised.  Statistically, they're ahead of Augsburg (which I would not have guessed) and Augsburg's offense really impressed me on Saturday.  It should be a fun game this weekend.

Had the opportunity to chat with some of the boys yesterday - Kotsmith, Haik, Vanderhayden and Saladin.  Everyone is psyched and ready to get down to Northfield and play the game.

The Carls have played the J's close the past two seasons.... could it happen again?

Isn't there a UMAC board? ???

Tmert, that board is in theory only, one cannot even go on there and stir things up, it has been idle since my attempt to do so almost a month ago.  If Pat still needs space he may want to consider taking it down.  Most conference in-game boards have more action on them.
Everyday is payday in paradise.

Don't believe there is a back room at Grundy's.... news to me.

However I was there before the Gustavus game... Bar tender gave us crap for ordering a pitcher at 11:15 AM.  Look forward to seeing some of you there!

Cant help but wonder what things would look like now if SJU had been able to recruit Henfling from their own backyard. Add an opportune injury in his FY and he'd be back next year, too.

He is hands down the MVP this season. Ramler is COY (even AO could get those 2 right). Stam will go to some big lineman that nobody but his teammates and family has heard of. IF there was a Defensive POY, I'd say it would go to Ziller at Carleton.

Should be an interesting game at Laird...Carleton's passing game is much better than Auggie's or at least not as vulnerable to weather conditions. Henfling isnt afraid to run, and they have a couple of modest backs who can and do get the job done. Frank/Gardner is a more potent 1-2 punch than Winford/Al-Hameed. Winford is the top WR in the league (although Arlt and Frank are nearly his equal) but Gardner gives Carleton TWO explosive potential game-breaking WRs.

(Oh, and UST should mop the field with NW, crushing AO's delusion about the Eagles being capable of contending in the MIAC...46-17)

Maniac...I see you are rounding into form of disdain for SJU with hoops on the horizon... first of all, I think Ryan Wimmer would also be a solid choice  for defensive player of the year oh and the Stam award last year should have went to Nick Gunderson, he will be back to win it next year.

Your praise of Arlt reminds me of praise for Ryan Hoag...yea nice receiver, but when faced with playing the best team in the conference he didn't do much.  I am surprised that you left Fritz W. out...that guy scares me more than Arlt, or Hameed.  Carleton has great WR's and running QB's have given SJU fits...

As for your Tommie victory...we will see, Northwestern might be better than you think, course losing to a middle of the road IIAC team does not impress anyone.

I cannot believe the Johns have snuk back into playoff contention...Good luck Johnnies!
Don't forget your booties cause it's cold out there!

I feel terrible. I just found out yesterday was "snow plow appreciation day" here in Wisconsin. I did nothing.....so....today I'm going to celebrate it hard to make up for it. I'll be starting in about a half hour, but if you guys stop for one after work, remember to toast one for the snow plows, I'll still be toasting at that time.
