St. Norb's knocks off Oshkosh tonight 60-52.

We should get our first idea of how tough Lawrence will be this season as they host Oshkosh Thursday.  If they can play as well as SNC did against them, then I think they will have no troubles being in the top 4 this season, however, if they struggle against UW-0, then it might be a long season for the Vikings....

I realize it's Oshkosh and their in the WIAC.  But, us WIACers are sure why they were ranked in the preseason and why they were picked 3rd in the preseason poll, even getting a 1st place vote.  I think everyone can agree that they were a 3-man team (the stats prove it) with co-player of the year DJ Marsh, Matt Miller and Jordan Johnson.  Well, the latter two graduated.  So, there's only Marsh left from that 9-7 conference team.  They do get Greg Schrimpf back from a year long injury and he looked good two years ago.  But, I think there is always going to be questions about their depth and if Marsh has an off-night, who's going to step up.  Apparently, last night, no one did when Marsh went 4-16.  It could be a long year for Oshkosh, but we'll see.

I absolutely agree.  Oshkosh is ranked way too high (i.e. they shouldn't be ranked).  D.J. Marsh is a great player and likely will be the POY in the WIAC again this year, but other than playing the spoiler, he doesn't have the supporting cast to make a legitimate run at the WIAC title.  And though he can take over games, he's not as dominating as Rich Melzer was... and Rich had a better supporting cast when UWRF won the WIAC in 03-04.

Lawrence beats Marian 77-68 at home last night.  John Dekker looks like he has no problem taking over control of this team with 33 points 6-10 from 3 land and 7 boards.

Jamie DeMathew starting his first game as a senior added 16.

Vikes host Oshkosh tomorrow night....should be a good one.  If I wasn't in the process of moving I'd be watching on MWC TV.

Maybe I was premature in designating Beloit as the Washington Generals as Marian figures to be better than expected. Then again they go to Augustana tonight and I'm not expecting anything positive.

I think you mean Dane Seckar-Anderson.....  Not trying to knit-pick, however DSA provided a lot more to the Titans offensively than Johnson did.  Johnson graduated two years ago....

System Error,

No comma needed or required. Your sentence was awkward, true. You could have used another "to."

"the freshmen coach was looking to (to) be....." still awkward, but correct.

How about: "The first years coach was hoping would be the leading scorers......"

Anyway, I think it's all good.

By the way, there's a lot to be learned tonight in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The Pioneers travel to William Penn University to meet the 7-1 Statesmen. Penn's only loss this year is to a Nationally ranked NAIA D1 school. And that was in overtime on a neutral court.

Penn also has a victory over a ranked opponent this year.

Fans and followers of the Midwest Conference will learn something about Grinnell. And the young Grinnell team will learn something about playing a solid, veteran opponent on the road.

Plus there's no love lost between these 2 teams.

Augustana 66 Beloit 53. Despite taking much of the first half off and trailing 34-17 at the half, Beloit rallied to within 2 points in the second. Unfortunately they hit a scoring drought in the last 3 minutes and the final is a bit misleading. Free throws after Beloit was forced to foul, etc.

and at least we learned that William Penn does not turn the ball over enough to lose to Grinnell (or Grinnell turns it over too much to win).

"System" haters are out early this year.

It looked like W. Penn didn't turn the ball over enough. Grinnell's turnovers (22), while not ideal, weren't that awful (in the system). St Norb had 19 TO in an uptempo win vs Sliver Lake, and IC had 22 in a victory over Westminster.

Maybe 5 more for Penn and 3 or 4 less for Grinnell and it would have been a tight game at the end.

More higher education ahead for the Pioneers the weekend against perennial Iowa Conference power Buena Vista. The coaches A are not dodging anyone with their non conference schedule this year.
