Ripon wins by 12, close until about 15 minutes to go.
Gillespie had like 29 points and 10 assists.

System Error

For those of you who watched the webcast, you kept hearing the commentators say, "this is some of the best basketball we have seen in a long time. Just a great game all around." I don't know what game they were actually watching.

Turnovers:
MC: 27 GC: 26
Free Throws:
MC: 16-32 GC: 12-26
Overall Shooting Percentage:
MC: 54.4% which is awful compared to the normal shooting percentage against the system.
GC: 32.9% pitiful. The fact they were still in this game is unbelievable.

MC beats GC for the first time in four years and you could tell by their excitement after the game. Yet, I have to say with the way they played yesterday on defense they should have won by twenty. They held Grinnell to 40 pts in the first half with tough man to man and 2-3 zone. I was very impressed. However, when they reached the bonus, they were unable to capitalize (understatement) at the line. They shot 50% from the line and could have put it away early. Also, I just realized the were out-rebounded by Grinnell which should not happen either. Yet, they were well balanced in scoring with four players in double figures, and three over 17 points.

MC tried to lose the game a few times including when they were up four with just over two minutes left. Cogdill got a foul he didn't think he deserved on a rebound resulting in two on the other end, but, meanwhile, threw the ball up in the air in disgust resulting in a technical, two more ft's and his exit from the game. Luckily, they held on.

Grinnell on the other hand, went down 10-0 in the first few minutes, resulting in Arseneault calling two timeouts within 13 seconds of each other. Matt Skelly, who had a magnificent week last week on his way to MWC Performer, shot 4-22 from the floor and 3-18 from three. He had a great look at the basket from three to put GC up one with 5 seconds left but the shot rimmed out and MC got the rebound for the win.
Lastly, it surprises me that after two amazing games against LU and CU, that Grinnell reverted back to their younger selfs and were unable to beat a team they had beaten eight times in a row previously. Being at 3-5 going into this game, with MC twice, Knox twice and Beloit, I for one, thought there may have been the smallest of outside chances. However, after losing to MC, I don't see them getting anywhere close.

One more thing, as the game was ending and the commentators were once again praising the amazing play of the game, they mentioned "no one could be unhappy with this performance, and Coach Arseneault surely couldn't be upset after the superb performance from his team..." "My response, you obviously don't know Coach Arseneault that well."

Has anyone else noticed there have been a lot less postings from the LU faithful this year...? In past years it seemed we only heard from Lawrence and Grinnell followers (and of course the Roop). Just food for thought.

The Roop

The Ripon faithful seem to be in hiding as well. They've had a couple rough years but so far so good this year.

We hang out in the archive pages to feel good about ourselves. Apparently Braier had a triple double last night to cap a weekend sweep of Carrol and Ripon.  LU!

The Roop

SNC over Beloit 77-69ot. Wish I could tell you what happened down the stretch but I lost the webcast with 3:06 remaining in regulation and the Bucs up 1. By the time I got it back SNC was shooting formality free throws to end the game.

Lake Forest 89 Grinnell 55... enough said.

A great effort by an over matched Beloit squad today. Slowly but surely they are working their way back to respectability. A real shame to lose this one, but hopefully recruits will see a future playing at BC on a team filled with improving underclassmen.

What is the least amount of points that Grinnell has scored since implementing the system?  This has to come close.  Anyone have a guess, or remember a game where they scored less than 55?

I watched bits and pieces of this game online, and it was not as close as the final score indicates.  Lake Forest seemed to pick apart the system systematically on offense and completely shut down the Grinnell offense.  Lake Forest starters were pulled around the 10 minute mark, which was about the same time that Grinnell pulled out of the traditional system and dropped back into a 2-3 zone.  Very weird to see.  Kudos go out to Lake Forest's Travis Clark who was 13-15 from the field, after missing his first 2 he made his final 13.  Patrick Hanley had 15 assists and 16 rebounds, impressive numbers even against the system.  It seems like Lake Forest is peaking at the right time.
