Knox is holding down the system tonight. Grinnell leads 43-42 at halftime.
"That seems silly and pointless..." - Hoops Fan

The first and still most accurate description of the D3 Championship BeltTM thread.

OBC

Rob Purlee channelling Tim Heimann. Playing defense on offense. It didn't work (often) back then either. Grinnell wins 85-68. I don't know much about the game, just posting the score to keep everyone updated.

Ripon's Bob Gillespie notched his 500th win as basketball coach over the weekend at Knox. Last night was his first home game and he was honored there. Some local TV coverage:

He also been head baseball coach there (might still be, I'm not sure - I know his dad was for awhile) and racked up some wins on the diamond, too.

Congratulations to Coach Skrivseth - his first MC victory, a 70-68 win over IC in double OT.
"Surprised?  If I woke up tomorrow morning with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn't be more surprised than I am right now."

I'd like to second that, fs13.  Congrats to Coach Skrivseth on getting that first Fighting Scots victory!  That's a nice road win for Monmouth after the struggles in recent seasons.

GC had completion problems, particularly in the 2nd 10 min of the 1st half. Gradually pulled away in 2nd half as Knox got tired. Still, surprised that KC held GC that low. KC was effective at breaking the press with lots of football throws. Jesse Ney had a great game.

Best of luck today for GC against Carroll. CU has historically had a fast running game plan with big guys. Haven't seen them this year, but I suspect it will be a fun game!

Nice work by GC against Carroll on Saturday. I don't know how Carroll continues to recruit these 6'7" husky guys that can run, but they do. Kudos to GC for facing a much taller and equally athletic team successfully. Good defense by Jack Adams. Carroll was successful at breaking the GC press as well as defending the 3s. However, I think GC simply wore them down with a deeper, more talented bench. Great way to end 2011!

With the 2011 portion of the schedule in the books, here are the updated conference standings from the Midwest Conference website...total records are in parenthesis.

Grinnell  4-0 (8-0)
Lake Forest  3-0 (6-1)
St. Norbert  3-1 (5-2)
Ripon  2-1 (5-1)
Lawrence  1-1 (2-3)
Illinois College  1-2 (2-4)
Monmouth  1-2 (1-4)
Carroll  1-3 (2-4)
Beloit  1-3 (1-6)
Knox  0-4 (0-5)

Few overall trends to note from those standings, especially the overall records.  As a group, the MWC has compiled a 32-31 mark so far on the year.  Pretty drastic dropoff from the top 4 vs. the bottom 6.

The top 4 teams (Grinnell, Lake Forest, St. Norberts, and Ripon) have combined for a total record of 24-4, which means the bottom 6 teams are combined 8-27.

Obviously it is very early on, with many conference games left to decide things, but could we possibly be headed for a year with a clearly defined top 4?  Right now the only team who seems to be close is Lawrence.

Again, I know it is early.

Knox found a way to pick up their first win of the season at Lawrence on Tuesday night.  Could the Scots get their second win in as many games when the Vikings come to Monmouth tonight?  Earlier in the season, I wouldn't have thought so...but right now I'm thinking they've got a shot at evening their MWC record to 2-2 before heading up to Ripon on Sunday.

Which leads me to believe that Lawrence is probably on the outside looking out of that top 4.  It seems we really do have a clear top 4 this season.
