Thanks for sharing TQ.  Rhode Island College has now had a traffic boom of at least 2 hits.
HEY PAL, DON'T BLOCK THE SHOT!

Bob Walsh, Rhode Island head coach, on the 138...

My sentiments entirely, and extremely well said.  Good luck to Coach Walsh and his team.  He gets it.

I know it was a significant traffic boom for D3hoops.com. I can't imagine how big it was for Grinnell.

That is clearly a plus for d3hoops.com.  Is that really all Grinnell College cares about? 8-)

I was out-of-town for Thanksgiving, so TQ beat me to the punch on the tourney game.  When Grinnell faces a decent team (even if they have never seen 'The System'), bad things are likely to happen.  In that 2001 tourney game a scoring record WAS set - IWU had never (and has never since) scored 132 points; alas Grinnell had 41 fewer.  Since we were not Principia or Faith Bible Baptist, Grinnell played The System straight; I guess they knew they weren't getting any (phony) individual records that night! :P

Something that bears mentioning is that Jack Parkman did not even shoot well that night - he MISSED 58 shots.  When you shoot 102 times more often than anyone else on the team, you will obviously score a lot of points.  But every TEAM against Faith Baptist has shot 59%; Grinnell shot 50% with Parkman shooting 46%)!

Since Faith Baptist is not d3 and lists the game as an exhibition, I have hopes that the record does not even count, but it is totally phony either way.

Grinnell got beat today by William Penn University. However, Will Penn is an NAIA school so the score obviously shouldn't count since they aren't DIII. And certainly no team should be allowed to play GC if they are better, can keep up, and are undefeated. What a travesty. Why, Will Penn even beat a team on Saturday by almost 90 points! Shameful for them to pick on lesser opponents. If any Will Penn players had records (don't know for sure if they did), they should be nullified because the played GC, and we all know that isn't real basketball. (hehehehehehehe!)

Congrats to William Penn. They have a really fine team!

I'll 2nd Jeffp's comments about William Penn. Tall, fast, and plenty of endurance. That is absolutely the right combination to beat the system - and that is what they did tonight.
Threes are better than twos....

jeffp

I wouldn't really know, Jeffdc, but my thoughts are way more valuable than yours for one GLARING reason. I was completely unencumbered by the reality of actually being AT the game, so I'm sure my opinion - if they differed from yours at all - would certainly be ore accurate.

jeffp

"more accurate". Obviously the "m" button on my computer didn't play defense.

i've held off on posting anything about the Grinnell debacle, which was so anti-Division III philosophy that it was embarrassing to any D-III institutions who is winning "the right way."  You should notice that teams that compete well nationally in the division [in all sports, not just basketball] do not resort to gimmicks to achieve competitive excellence.  So congratulations to Grinnell for making a mockery of Division III's philosophy.

It is heartening to hear that Grinnell lost to William Penn.  May Coach Arseneau encounter many other TEAM losses this year.

Mr. Ypsi

I have no problem with The System.  I DO have a problem with it being perverted to aggrandize one individual, against a clearly over-matched opponent you beat by 75 points.  THAT is my issue, not The System.  This was NOT teammates deferring to the 'hot hand' (since he wasn't even hot!); this was a pre-planned attempt at erasing the record (previously held by a Grinnell player :P).  I do NOT blame Jack Parkman (or his teammates); they were just doing what the coach ordered.  I DO blame David Arsenault for abysmal sportsmanship and a total bastardization of d3 philosophy and the concept of TEAM sports.  The d3 world has noticed that he never attempts such records against teams that are composed of actual basketball players! 8-)

jeffp, you may have been idle so long that you would remember me as cabonney.  I've always defended The System as an alternative that seemed to make sense for Grinnell.  (My wife and I intended to spend a night in Grinnell early this September, but something was going on that EVERY motel was booked solid.  We drove around the campus but could not spot Saints Rest (my wife is even more of a coffee fiend than I am!), but had to cut it short to find a motel towards Des Moines.)

Jack Parkman?

I have NO clue where I came up with Jack Parkman (but also used that in an earlier post, and wasn't challenged).  Jack Taylor!

Just back from Illinois and tryptophan poisoning, AND still in football mode - enough excuses?! :-[

jeffp

Mr Ypsi - musta been parents weekend, or maybe a Race in Newton just down the road. The shop is right down town, on the main square. Sorry you couldn't find us. I will warn you tho, until The Roop shows up, there will be NO Roopaccinnos served.

All other persuasions will be accommodated.

jeffp

almost forgot! Jack Parkman is EXTREMELY happy with all the undeserved attention. ;D

Mr. Ypsi

Finally figured out 'Jack Parkman' - he is an occasional poster on the NWC football board, who was quite active before and after the NCC game at Linfield.  I KNEW this was all because I was still in football mode! :P
