There's actually conference games this weekend.  Let's talk about that.  Why isn't anyone running the pick em anymore?

Knox at Lawrence...surprised LU lost at Ripon.  LU should bounce back.
Lake Forest at Ill. College...last year's conf champs took one in the chin at home vs. Carroll.  Should win on the road.
Ripon at Grinnell Honey Boo Boo...most entertaining matchup.  Can Ripon pull the upset, again?
St. Norbert at Cornell...Look for Norb's to roll.
Monmouth at Beloit...Beloit should win at home.

i absolutely love the revised name from grinnell to honey boo boo.  maybe grinnell... errr... honey boo boo needs to change its mascot to the 'duck dynasty.'

I think we, as denizens of D-3, need to be a bit more upscale with our pop-culture references, as ghastly as Honey Boo-Boo is, I don't think it truly represents the bifurcation of opinions that Grinnell seems to elicit. I firmly believe most like that show for irony's sake, much like the train-wrecks we all gawk at. We need to be a bit more erudite 'round here.

So I propose Grinnell could be:

Free Form Jazz (Albert Ayler, or Eric Dolphy)
Prog Rock (ELP or Yes)
Soccer (HAH!)
The Designated Hitter
The Life of Pi
HBO's Girls (or the Newsroom)
Neo-Cubism
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
The Byrds "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album
Truffle Oil
Sabremetrics

A bit esoteric, yes, but it's the D-3 way. Now, I'll retreat back to the NCAC for One Hundred Years of Solitude (In The Time of Cholera, Amen).

Wow! I kinda like "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" for many reasons, the best of which is THAT album is from my era at Grinnell. But if you wanna go with Free Form Jazz, its gotta be Rashaan Roland Kirk. The dude could play 3 saxes at once and if that ain't appropriate I don't know what is....

i think it has to be Hawkwind's 'Quark Strangeness and Charm'

Pfft. If it's bifurcation of opinions, irony, and gawking at trainwrecks you want, Smeds, then Grinnell men's basketball is definitely the Legendary Stardust Cowboy.

The scoring records appear to be safe tonight.  The Good Guys are up 52-43 at half.  I'm pretty sure that Honey Boo Boo's theme song should be "Gimme Three Steps" by Lynard Skynard.  The refs seem happy to oblige.  Nevertheless, in Skrivseth we trust.

......20 minutes later.....Arsenault replaces the Gatorade with Roopacino Deluxe and Honey Boo Boo escapes Monmouth with a 107-99 win.

Nice victory for GC - err, HBB - last night over MC. It was MC's game to lose at the half. GC had super-cold shooting, MC did not. Yet it looked like GC wore them down in the last 12 min, and Levin had an excellent string of shots. SNC is next.
Threes are better than twos....

Greek Tragedy

Very competitive last night as four of the five games decided by single digits and SNC topping LFC by just 11.

Grinnell and Carroll stay undefeated with close wins over Monmouth and Lawrence. St. Norbert and Beloit both improve to 2-1 topping Lake Forest and Ripon. Not to be forgotten, Knox got their first conference win and in the process giving Cornell their first conference loss.

SATURDAYS GAMES

Beloit at Knox
Ripon at Ill. College
Carroll at Monmouth
Grinnell at St. Norbert
Cornell at Lawrence

Very fair account, dc.  The young Scots hung in there quite admirably and Honey Boo Boo should be on notice when they go up against the veteran teams in the conference.  Especially, since it appears that Jack Taylor is no longer on the watch list for the NBA lottery.  1-7?  OMG!   ::)

Yep. We have 3 powerful trey shooters (Taylor, Lentsch, Yeager), but they've been very iffy the past 2 games. You don't see 3 shooters slump at the same time usually. But then, we also have Levin and Maher. So we get through. But I agree, SNC could be a real challenge. And MC really did some fine defense in yesterday's game, IMO.
Threes are better than twos....

Greek Tragedy

LU shot 16-20 from 3 and lost. Tyler Mazur was 9-11. Someone over in tje WIAC board reminded me of that.
