GRE Tragedy: Your scenario has occured a time or two.  I recall Honey Boo Boo playing at Illinois Weslyan within the last decade, but Pat's team archives don't go back quite that far for me to quickly check the results.  Most likely it was something like this: Grinnell plays against vastly superior athletes; the refs don't fall for the hack-attack-whack-your-back defense and actually call fouls; Honey Boo Boo gets beat handily; and the end of the opponent's bench gets to say they played in a NCAA tournament game.

HEY PAL, DON'T BLOCK THE SHOT!

Okay, maybe it's only happened once....  I don't know....  Do you own research....   :)

Here's what I found on the IWU website:

Illinois Wesleyan Men's Basketball Team Records
MOST POINTS SCORED
Game: 132 vs. Grinnell, March 1, 2001 (132-91) [also NCAA D-III tournament record]

So there you have it.

p.s.  In the press conference after that game, I wonder if Coach A said something like, "Oh, we're part of another NCAA record?  Well then I guess the loss is okay.  We knew IWU was just feeling it tonight, and there was nothing we could do."    ;)

I would like to see Grinnell make the NCAA tourney just so I could see how an opponent who has never played them, or anything like it, adjusts.  I'm talking about a National Championship caliber team, like IWU, Whitewater or the like. Obviously they would probably play a team in the Midwest, geographically speaking, in the early rounds.

Been there, done that 126-90 in 2006 and 134-95 in 2009.  In the 2006 win we shot 64% for the game and seven of our guys scored in double figures.  They shot 60 3's, we shot 4.  In 2009 six of our guys scored in double figures.  This time we shot 77% from the floor and they shot 65 3's and we shot 4.  The 134 points is a program record and the 126 is fourth all time.  The combined points scored in 2009 is also the program's record and the 2006 total is fifth.  Our 37 assists in 2006 is second all time and the 65 rebounds that night is seventh all time.  The 2009 shooting percentage is the best in the program's history and the 59 fieldgoals made ranks 2nd all time.  Grinnell is also #1 and #2 in three point baskets made against us (21 in 2009 and 17 in 2006) and the 27 turnovers they forced in 2006 was our 4th highest.

so - 2 tournament games today. Who'll win?

GC vs CC at 5

SNC vs RC at 7

CC is always a tough matchup for GC. If GC wins, it would be interesting to see if they can beat SNC 3 times in one season....
Threes are better than twos....

Greek Tragedy

What a disappointing ending for Grinnell. With one game left in conference, they controlled their own destiny. Win and you win the conference title and host the conference tourney. No such luck. They lose, handing the crown to the Green Knights and then proceed to lose to Carroll in the semis...

Congratulations to St Norbert for winning the conference out right and for winning the MWC Tournament. Now, do us all proud and go win a few NCAA DIII games too, willya? You certainly are capable of it!

hickory_cornhusker

Fun fact about playing Grinnell in the MWC Tourney: No team has defeated Grinnell in the semis and taken the championship since Lawrence in 1997.

Another Grinnell chokejob....color me surprised  :o

Congrats to SNC, but they get no gift getting UWSP in the first round.....
Better Dead then Red

Oh, Larry minus U, that's not very nice. Yes Lawrence beat GC and all, but really. And just where did The Big U finish in the standings? And where were you all year? Just slither out from underneath the rocks to take pot shots?  ;D
