Really excited for D3 hoops in the Fox Valley--LU hosts Wisco Lutheran Friday then plays at Point on Saturday--back to backs are always tough.   Then Oshkosh and St Norbert College open at De Pere next week.    :)

Jeff P, if you'll recall, Keith Chamberlain came to Grinnell as a 16 year old. He became a very good player in conference, but really started to hit his stride playing professionally in Europe. He is still a very young man, and who knows what can happen. We may still see him in the NBA. Wouldn't that be cool? He's a great kid; very smart, and is now looking pretty ripped as you mentioned.

What is the back story on Chamberlain?? How did he end up at GC at such a young age?  Cousin of Anthony Davis?

Can someone explain this karma +/- is about?

In the past, just our "net" karma was posted... so it was the + karma minus the - karma (or, as in your case, your - karma + your + karma, and the net was still negative).

Pat changed it to see how many times you've been "voted up" and how many times you've been "voted down."

Because a -13 karma (as in your case) could mean that somebody has had 1 up vote and 14 down votes...

Or it could mean that someone has 983 up votes and 1000 down votes.

In short, the net karma only told a portion of the story... seeing the up and down votes can show how volatile a poster is (make a lot of points that people like but makes other points that they dislike.... or they are a part of a very active board but just don't root for the dominant team in that league however the case may be).

Thanks, I guess.  ???  This is an interesting feature--sort of like the Yahoo Finance boards where longs and shorts bash each other constantly.  This board seems a little more peaceful.  I don't see any icon for me to vote. wonder why?

I suspect that the word "Appleton" is enough to get all the other MWC fans to minus me.  I will now have to work extra hard to be a diplomat or a villain on these boards.  ;)

Thanks for the clarification.

A minimum amount of posts is required to be able to vote... don't remember how many (100, 200, or 250, I think).

The intention there is that someone can't abuse the system and create a bunch of phony accounts and vote someone else down incessantly who they don't like, etc etc.

Most of the more "senior posters" around here don't pay much attention to the karma numbers anymore (or they never really did).  There's just too much else in life to concern ourselves with than the collective impression of the members of an online message board.

Some of the more difficult pieces about the karma feature are:

a) The vandetta I mentioned above could still exist... one could vote against (or for) a person once a day and drastically effect someone's overall karma.

b) For people who post with a decent amount of regularity may get up-voted for one post and down-voted for a different one (depending on the moods of different readers) but those posts may have been from days or weeks ago. Individual posts are not up- or down-voted... the person who wrote the post is.

So if someone does want to keep tabs on their karma, this would be difficult... and one may assume that they're getting down-voted for a post that they didn't actually receive the down-vote for.

c) I think that some people use the up- or down- votes to show their agreement or disagreement with a certain posts but they don't want to actually comment on it (or they haven't the time, etc, etc). The only "problem" with this is that the votes go to the poster and not to the post... so it isn't necessarily clear what the up-vote or down-vote is for and may be misinterpreted.

--As an aside, the message board USED to have voting on the individual posts instead of for the poster. It was definitely a different dynamic.

The Lawrence game was constantly interrupted by what felt like petty fouls, all under the new hand check rules.   This is going to take some getting used to.  I can't imagine how long the game vs. Grinnell will take.   ???

Sitting here watching college football and Baylor is leading Texas Tech at half 35-27.
I also saw on SportsCenter this morning that Princeton's football team is running an offense with three quarterbacks on the field at the same time.

After all these years, I can't help but think of all the members of this board who must HATE what these teams are doing because it isn't REAL football.  ;D ::)

It sure is entertaining, though!

BTW, where the heck is Crossroads College?

systemfan86

Oh boy, here we go again.

Just checked the Grinnelll game. 158-100 with time left. When I pulled up the audio, Jack Taylor had a 104.

Let the wailing begin.

Perhaps a virtual middle finger from the team over last year's negative response?

Sigh...

systemfan86

Interesting...

Watching the end of the game and the Crossroads College players are throwing alley-oops to teammates.
From the visual, at least Crossroads is not hanging their heads.

Just anticipating the blow back...

System,
Crossroads College is in Rochester, Mn. and is an NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Assn) member.
The first mistake they made was only bringing 9 players (they have more on the roster). They were bushed by halftime. The second mistake was trying to play man against Taylor. It took them well in to the 2nd half to figure out the most common way to be competitive against Grinnell (no, I'm not tellin' what that is). That being said, I think they are now 0-9. Not MWC caliber at all, but certainly not Faith Baptist bad either.
Notes:
1. Taylor shot 50/50...35 of 70  and 24 0f 48 from 3pt range. He creates 3 pt shots for himself better than any player I can remember at Grinnell. The naysayers can howl all they want, you still have to be able to stop him...and when you do, there are a few others who will burn the perimeter.
2. Really nice to see the 3x5 rotation with a few others chucked in for good measure. This strategy will win games.
3. The defense needs some work before the Wartburg game on Wednesday, or it could be a long night. That being said, the team seems to be adjusting well to the new hand-checking rules and is loaded with quick handed players who will cause typical Grinnell turnover numbers all season.
4. It really doesn't look like Taylor and the 19 Dwarfs despite what the numbers show. This is a good, developing, very young Grinnell team with seven 1st year players - 3 have it figured it out and 2 more seem to be getting better every trip down the court.
5. Grinnell has a solid chance to make the Conference Tourney.

Let the boo-birds have their say, Taylor is a player and the coaches should use him in whatever way best suits the team - even if he DOES have to score 100 pts a game for them to be competitive in the MWC.
