HEY PAL, DON'T BLOCK THE SHOT!

Carroll fights hard at the end but can't pull it off.  Should be another good game when it comes to Carroll.

I hope this good showing garnishes Carroll more top 25 votes, rather than less  :)

I know many people who don't particularly believe in anyone in the MWC besides Larry are good, were using this game to see if Carroll was really for real.

What an exciting game. LU pulls it out 86-81 with, of all things, good free-throw shooting. As has been common this year, LU was handing it to Carroll before they pulled within nine at the half. I don't think they got any close than four the rest of the way (don't quote me on that) but the big difference with this win was that Carroll was definitely strong enough to come back after being down big.

Carroll was helped by one defensive lapse after a MacGillis missed FT where Drury, who was really held in check all game, drilled a wide open three -- he looked stunned to see no one on him, took a dribble to set his feet, and nailed it. He was also touch-fouled on a three later and hit all the FTs.

All in all a very competetive game, but I wanted some views from either a neutral fan or a Carroll fan -- I, probably being a biased LU fan, thought the officiating was just terrible. Not universally terrible, terrible as in a Carroll player runs through MacGillis' to knock away a pass, and when MacGillis makes a clean steal on the guy from behind, a foul is called. Not to mention numerous touch blocking calls on Lawrence players down low when Carroll was grabbing shirts and hacking all night. Ahhh feels good to get that off my chest. But seriously, anyone else have any views?

Did someone at Point manage to spell all of the words right or did they have to get some outside help?  Sorry, low blow back at you.

My worst prediction of the year so far = Knox as a longshot to win the MWC

My best prediction of the year so far = Beloit will be an also ran despite the hype

Drury was so shocked that he traveled on that 3 and the rum dums that were reffing tonight missed it.  It was obvious.

MWC referreeing has hit a new low.  These guys tonight were horrible.  Both ways.  They just missed a bunch of fouls and then would call shadow fouls.  The African American ref's performance (I don't know his name or number) tonight was laughable.  Good thing they were equally bad.   Schultz and Tharp both just walked away about 4-5 times each tonight, they knew these guys were hopeless.

The conference needs to fix this--it could really make a difference some night.

Carroll is very good.  They will contend for the title.  Toshner is a stud IMO.

Knox 80 - Monmouth 79 (OT)

Will post game info next, just wanted to get the score on here right now...

Monmouth jumped out to a 10-0 lead about 3-4 minutes into the game, only to have Knox answer back with a 10-0 run of their own to tie the game about midway through the first half.  Knox outplayed the Scots the remainder of the half to take a 33-25 lead into halftime.  The Fire really took it to Monmouth in building a 64-40 lead with approximately 5 minutes left in the second half.  I'll be honest--I was just wanting the game to get over with so I could head home because Monmouth looked very flat with no intensity and no sense of urgency throughout most of the game.  However, it got interesting around that 5-minute mark as Monmouth rallied by actually knocking down shots in the closing minutes of the game and tied it at 73 apiece when Blaise Rogers hit a leaning 3-pointer as time expired in regulation to send it into overtime (for those not counting, that was a 33-9 run in the final minutes of regulation :o).  It was back and forth during the OT period and with 7 seconds left, Monmouth was inbounding the ball in the corner on their end of the floor.  The in-bounds pass, thrown out towards half court, was errant (sp?) and Moten, of Knox, tapped it away towards the Prairie Fire basket, chased it down, and was fouled on his lay-up attempt wth 3 seconds left.  He missed the first free throw, then sank the second shot for the 80-79 lead.  Scott Scholten, of Monmouth, took the in-bounds pass after the made free throw and was able to get off a half court shot that was on line but was just short and bounced off the front of the rim to end the game.

It really wasn't much of a game until the final 5 minutes of regulation--Knox really took it to Monmouth for most of the game but completely let it slip away in the end of the second half.  The amazing thing to me was that Monmouth's late run to get the game into overtime was done with several key starters sitting on the bench after not playing very well for much of the game and was instead done by some young players off the Scots' bench.  However, it's unfortunately just another close loss (another OT loss, that makes 3 now) where Monmouth has dug themselves a big hole by not playing well or with any sense of urgency/intensity, then try to overcome that big deficit late in the game, and fall just short of picking up a win.  Hope to see schwanman's take on the game at some point on here too...

Well done, Maverick! You've got about everything I would have written already on there. If the Scots had indeed won the game, I was ready to bust out my Jack Buck "I don't believe what I just saw!" call, but unfortunately, an overtime loss in the MWC for Monmouth is all too believable.

Great game by David Price, and Blaise Rogers made like Snydz vs. Lawrence in the last 4:14, scoring 14 points. One could make the case that he was fouled on his tying three -- after all, a lesser hit had resulted in three free throws for him on the prior possession -- but you know you're not going to get that call.

Hey, Scottie ... Coach Haynes has added some more studs. I'll give you the scoop next Wednesday!

Beloit fans I recommend that you just pretend the game was really that close and you might not feel as bad as one who saw it in person.

schwanman - Thanks for the props there!  The Jack Buck call would've been a perfect fit if the Scots would've pulled out tonight's game.  Like you said though, unfortunately another overtime loss in the MWC is very believable these days...

Agree here that David Price played a helluva game for Monmouth tonight--seemed like he was the only one getting much work done down low and getting his shots in the paint to drop also.  Was he the player who threw the bad pass with 7 seconds left resulting in the break away lay-up attempt and game-winning free throw?  (I can't remember for sure who it was...)  I knew Rogers had a big part in the comeback for the Scots, but didn't realize that he almost went Snydz on 'em!  And you're very right in your assessment that he could've made a case for being fouled on that game-tying three, but almost never going to get a call at that stage of the game.
