scottie - I don't think Rogers is a "loose cannon" at all, seemed to be fairly poised on the court for most of the game.  As schwanman said, his technical was strange since it came after an obvious foul on the Scots.  But he must've said something to the official that he didn't like so he nailed him with the T; or maybe he had a complaint about a previous call and it hit a nerve of that official; nobody on here is really going to know what actually happened down on the court, so it's just a guessing game as to what went on.

schwanman - Good call on hoping to see Price get the ball in-bounded and then set up on the block for a return pass to try and score (or at least draw a foul) in the final 7 seconds.  I was hoping for the same kind of play too after seeing him go to work down low several times throughout the game.  As you said though, Moten made a nice play to tap away a pass that was basically thrown up for grabs (I assume that 'up for grabs' has the same meaning as a 50-50 ball from your soccer reference ;)).

Well, at least the Scots can't lose another heartbreaker this weekend since they don't play another game until Tuesday, Jan. 24 at home with IC.

Cubs~

The officiating wasn't that great, but they were never put in any stressful situations with the game being a blow-out for the most part....so it was hard to tell.  I guess they really didn't stick out in my head so they had to be OK.  But I honestly agree with anyone that says the officials, overall, aren't very good.

T2K~

I wouldn't do that if I were you....

T-Bird Teacher ~

Well that's ashame that older players like Towns and Hendry can't realize the importance to feed your one and only post threat.  I would think with Hinz and those other two guys, Beloit would be much better.  The effort given last night by Towns was a joke.   But you are right, Beliot lacked depth and the ability to guard the more athletic players.

titan2000-

So apparently 3 Point Play's statement is not entirely accurate. WIAC fans DO complain about officiating, they just come over to the MWC site to do it! ;D

Most WIAC posters have trouble spelling "referee."   :o

Ouch.  The WIAC has little problem spelling "National Championship" though.  :o

Ironic the "referrreeingg"  (how do you spell that again?) is a topic here since the WIAC board is questioning the number of times "traveling" has been called.  Some of us who can't spell over in the WIAC board feel that the refs are letting the players play a little more.

I refrain from criticizing the MWC and it's play since I don't see where that is necessary.

Was just curious, since one of the better officials (at least in my opinion) I have seen over the past 10 years (Dave Keliher) was doing the game.  There was some discussion on the WIAC board about the UWRF/UWO game he did last weekend, so I was curious to hear a "neutral" parties opinion.

I have mentioned it before (on the WIAC board) that I can only really think of three officials that I would say do a good job on a regular basis (Brad Presentin, Mike Bunge, and Keliher.)  Sometimes those guys get new partners and don't appear to be doing as good a job thanks to the "poor" job their partners are doing.

Well, the WIAC can't win it every year.  ;)

I found an interesting quote from Tharp in T2K's link:

"It all starts in practice, and no one sees how hard we compete on a daily basis,'' said Tharp. "It's not as if we have to get after them to compete.

"And I'll tell you what, if someone gets soft, 34 (Braier) will rip their head off. And so will Kyle MacGillis. That's what you want out of seniors.''

I just want to make it a point for everyone to realize and understand that the way LU PRACTICES and plays everyday of the season, is what makes them great.  And that is a direct result of the leadership of Briaer and MaGillis.  It's interesting because you read how Braier gets on his teammates if they aren't intense...that's a rare rare quality in a star.  One guy I know of who had this quality, you may or may not remember, is Adam Zakos.  He used to literally kick guys out of practice himself...you think Ripon's back to back confernce championships (98, 99) had anything to do with a guy like that?

Does this look like a foul to you ?

I don't know about the foul, but damn, did Bill Walton of the 1970's signup to play for Larry?!?!
:D ;D :D

The LU defensive style causes lazy refs to miss things--and they sure did on both sides of the ball last night.

If the refs can't keep up with Larry's pace, what shot in H-E-double-toothpicks do they have of calling GC's games?

??? ;D

The Roop

Tuesday I got quite a surprise when chatting with the Hoopsville guys during their show. I, "The Roop" was actually asked to write a story about the Beloit-Ripon game since I was going to be there. This is the only reason why I stayed for the second half. The score hasn't been posted on the site yet so there obviously isn't a release about it. Probably no need for one either as a real game never actually took place. However, I did make the effort and suffered through a second 20 minutes to fulfill my promise. So everyone here will get to see it whether you like it or not.

Subj: Ripon 74 Beloit 59

Once upon a time this game would have ranked right up there with the likes of a Hope-Calvin match up but sadly times have changed. No longer is a Beloit-Ripon contest a clash of titans in search of the top spot in the conference. Rather it's a dropped down a few notches and is a battle between teams in search of an identity and an upper hand in the lottery for the 4th spot in the MWC Tournament. Ripon came out on top tonight with a 74-59 win in a game that wasn't actually that close.

Both teams opened up at a blistering pace. Up and down, all over the court. Unfortunately neither team could really get the lid off the basket in the opening minutes and the game remained low scoring despite the tempo. Eventually the shots started dropping for both teams and Ripon opened a 21-15 lead at the 10:35 mark. Both teams traded baskets over the next few minutes and Ripon held a 29-23 advantage with 6:36 remaining. Then the wind went out of the Buccaneers sails. One shot possessions, poor rebounding and turnovers, many unforced, sealed Beloits fate as they went scoreless for over 5 minutes. An Andy Horton lay up with 1:17 left finally ended the Beloit drought and made the score 42-25. Ripon then outscored Beloit 7-2 to close out the first half with a 49-27 lead.

In the second half Ripon had an answer for every Beloit challenge and the Bucs could never mount a serious threat. Beloit did manage to pull within 13 points but by then the game was already decided and the wholesale substitutions had begun. Ripon out rebounded Beloit 22-10 in the first half and 39-22 for the game. Beloit was only 1 of 10 from three point range in the first half and 3 of 17 for the game. Close your eyes and shoot numbers if I ever saw it. Ripon was a solid 42.9% from beyond the arc for the game and only attempted 5 in the second half. Josh Hinz lead Beloit with 18 points, no one else was close to double figures. Bo Johnson lead a trio of Red Hawks in double figures with 23. David McMullen tallied 13 and Brian Schmitting added 11.

Beloit falls to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Ripon improves to 4-9 and 3-4 respectively. Both teams hit the road for their next game which will be at Carroll who dropped an 86-81 decision at Lawrence tonight.

The Roop

Sorry if I didn't rant to the usual "The Roop" standards but keep in mind I wrote this with a release in mind, not a post on the message boards. Also sorry for not praising Ripon more but I don't think they did anything exceptional to win this one.

Roop~

Really like your intro except you make it sound like Ripon has fallin as far down as Beliot has.  I realize Ripon has a terrible record this year, but this is a program that was just losing the conference championship game in OT at Alex last year...not struggling to make the playoffs year in and year out.

-Maybe you could have talked about Brian Schmitting and his nation leading FG%.  Also, do you notice how Ripon's defense is a ton better when he is in the game...not so easy to drive to the hoop with him waiting there.

-Also, I think "one and done" was a huge story in this game with Ripon out-rebounding Beliot 39-22.  I agree Ripon didn't do anything that spectacular, but what does that say about Beliot then?

Scottie~
