I think as the "System" approaches two decades of service, we can safely say "normal" in Grinnell, Iowa is exactly how the team plays each and every game.  Normal is in the eye of the beholder.

Well put, Hoops Fan.

Knox will get a look at 'GC normal' when jeffp makes his appearance. Probably worth listening to the police scanner!  :)

I have seen both teams and believe Carroll will win by over 10 points.  As an LU fan, I hope I am wrong and Ripon wins, but that is my gut instinct.  I will be shocked.....and report I am wrog if Ripon wins.

Indeed, it is a big game for both teams. I hope Paul Nordlund will travel with the team because his presence on the bench Saturday for the LFC game made a huge difference in team spirit.

Team spirit?  Those GC guys have too much spirit.   There is enough talent on that team that I think they might want to abandon the system and play it straight up.  But I suspect they will not and the result will be a good but not great record.  Just my opinion.

Are you talking about this year's team specifically or this team going forward?

Whether this year's team would be better playing 'straight up' (relax, I won't go there) is a pointless query. The biggest reason that GC wouldn't 'abandon' their style of play is the same no other team would abandon theirs: changing style in mid-year would likely mean poorer play as any team adjusts to the different style.

Specific to abandoning the Grinnell system would be the question of playing time; who essentially do you 'cut' from the team so you can maximize the 'straight up' style? And how do you sell that change to a team that was sold on lots of players contributing? That would be a very tough sell.

This should be attached as a warning label to all teams considering the 'Grinnell' style of play...it is truly a commitment that goes well beyond just one season...

Maybe, but greater paricipation is considered one of the selling points by the proponents of this style of play.

In my line of work (computer applications) we are know to say "That's not a bug, it's a feature!"  ;D

As someone who coaches in the System, it is not as much of a selling point as you might think.  In your business, aren't there some bugs that can crash your entire system?

TeeDub

but please don't get me wrong...I love the style!!!

I'm guessing t2k was referring to this year's team, as it has the nation's leading scorer, assists, etc.

The system is like any approach to playing the game (perhaps I should say, any successful approach) - it's holistic and demands both consistency and talent. To drop a new approach into a 'system' team would be like dropping the 'system' into a conventional team - a disaster. Like JordisRocks says, it's a committment.

But from both a fan's and player's perspective, it's also a blast!

That's when we know it's really a bug! Everything else we can sell as a feature!

Trust me, Dilbert isn't that far off from the real world. Every IT shop has cube walls with Dilbert cartoons taped up. It's the law.

The Roop

For those who sent messages, thanks for your concern. I realize it's not like me to stir the pot and run away but I am still a member in good standing on the boards.  I had an incident last Tuesday that wasn't getting any better on it's own and I finally decided to have it looked at yesterday. I wish I had a story about a heroic effort in the local rec league to tell about but the reality is it was simply an icy parking lot and dress shoes that did me in.

In addition to the "Why didn't you come in sooner" lecture I now have lots of nos to comply with over the next few days, one of which is no stairs. I don't mind the no work part but no stairs simply won't work. Bedroom, computer and most importantly the shower is upstairs so I am non-compliant. I get the impression the the Sports Medicine Physician will be too preoccupied with the Nurse Practitioner, and vice versa, to have time to check the boards and lecture me for my disobedience before I see them again Monday.

Not sure if it's cool or not but "The Roop" might be getting his first MRI.

At the risk of firing up an old debate I will say this. Beloit hasn't done anything in 25 years. #1 in the DIII World then, nothing close since. Therefore, history and tradition no longer matter, it's time to start over. Starting over however does not mean firing everybody. Similarly I wish the Milwaukee Brewers would make a run in the playoffs, not just because I'm a fan but because we could stop talking about the 1982 team then. ENOUGH ALREADY.

I will never understand Beloits obedience to the MWC. Of the 6 charter schools only 3 remain. The world has not ended because those schools left. Beloit is somewhere between the crawling and walking stage right now, I only hope when they finally learn to run that they will take the next step. Whether it be another conference, independent, DII, NAIA or even higher. The community will never embrace the College again until they have exceeded a level they have already achieved.

Beloit was ranked #1 in the 80-81 season.  They followed that up with conferenc championships in 81-82, 82-83, 88-89, 92-93 and 94-95.  While they may have not won in NCAA tournament games during that time frame I would hardly call 5 chanpionships in a 14 year period nothing.  In addition to those five titles, the teams that did not win championships were consistently playing in the final four and the homecourt record over that same time span was outstanding.

The bottom line continues to be that Beloit hasn't done anything in nine years.

Off to the SNC game after pressing my robe and hood.

You're late then, the game was at 5:00PM tonight.

Interesting isn't it citizens. Dolph has gone out of his/her way to comment on a post by "The Roop". When Dolph has already stated that he/she no longer claims to have any respect for "The Roop". How can this be................. Classic example of denial my friends. "The Roop" can only hope that Dolph is seeking the appropriate help needed.

In the short term "The Roops" only hope is that Dolph will learn to use the quote feature when he next visits David Duke.
