amazing stat line for Grotberg last night.  34 minutes and only 4 turnovers with 7 assissts.  As a guard in that type of game that is more impressive than the 37pts.

someone mentioned price and beiard were amazing.  Beaird with 9 assts. yes that is amazing, and Price well I believe i have stated my opinion of his game once or twice on here....

Here's to hoping MC will pound it inside as Price and Terwelp will both be back next year.....

i have no idea why i was logged in as my "alias".....
I could be wrong, but I doubt it....

You might want to stick with your alias ... it's got better karma!

Ouch.  Although if he sticks with his alias he can't give us karma in retaliation.

Hey all~

I went to the RC/LU game and the atmosphere was awesome.  Titan 2k was pretty dead on with his take of the game....The game was back and forth the whole game...I think LU's largest lead might have been 10.  Ripon had the lead at one point, but LU always had an answer.  LU shot lights out from 3, but a lot of the looks they made were wide open shots where they made the "extra" pass everytime.  LU does a better job at getting Braier "touches" every possesion which forces the defense to sag...when Briaer kicks it out it leaves everyone in scramble mode.  LU is such a solid team.  They don't impress you that much with athletic talent or height, they just play so hard and so together.  Some of the younger guys (#30, #12?) really stepped up and hit some open shots and made plays.  I guess what I realized lastnight is that LU will still be a very good team without Briaer and MaGillis and Bradley.  They are coached so well and are so disiplined.  Now that's not to say they won't extremly miss the leadership and intangles that those Seniors bring....which is why they will fall back down to the pack.

With all that being said....Ripon really didn't play well.  McMullen and Wise went a combined 1-7 from the FT line down the stretch.  Schmitting, who never misses down low had to have missed 3 or 4 lay-ups....they just didn't finish at all. This is not to take away from LU's tough performance on the road, but you have to make FT's and bunnies to beat a team like LU.  I have no doubt in my mind that Ripon can beat LU....even in LU if necessary....in talking to some of the players they really feel they let one get away and they really really want another shot at LU.  It's going to be a tough road to get there, but don't count RC out yet.  I wouldn't want to play these guys again...

mwc4life

Oh yeah,  I knew we were in trouble when MaGillis banks in a 3 under 5:00 minutes to go...nice bounce.

Oh and the refs were bad of course...It really doesn't bother me that much anymore because I just know they are going to be bad....both ways...bad!

At the risk of facing OFS's wrath... ;)

Congrats to J Grotberg on passing the 500 point mark for the season/career. Regardless of your opinion of the GC style of play, it's nice to see a player pass one of those 'big round number' milestones.

Here's hoping he gets to play (at least) two extra games this season to add to that total!

I believe this has been talked about already, but what the hey..........

Beloit (5-5):  MONMOUTH                         Grinnell (7-4):  @ Ripon
                     GRINNELL                                                    @ Beloit
                     @ Lawrence                                                @ Illinois College
                     @ St. Norbert                                              KNOX
                     RIPON                                                         @ Lake Forrest
                     CARROLL

Knox (7-4):  @ Lawrence                          Ripon (5-6):  GRINNELL
                    @ Carroll                                                    MONMOUTH
                    MONMOUTH                                               @ St. Norbert
                    @ Grinnell                                                  CARROLL
                    Illinois College                                           @Beloit

Beloit: 4 home/2 away - 2 big games at home against GC and RC.  The 2 road games will be VERY tough to pull off.

Grinnell:  1 home/4 away - 1 home game a must win against KC.  Always tough to win on the road.  Big weekend for them coming up with BC and RC.

Knox:  2 home/3 away - Only plays one team still looking for a playoff spot, but it is on the road at GC.  Other 2 road games are tough at LU and CC.

Ripon:  3 home/2 away - They can probably only afford to lose 1 more, and it probaly will come from the likes of CC at home, or the final game against BC in Beloit.

All 4 teams have a tough test. and I'd like to know who you guys think is better off (controls their own destiny)?  Either way, it's a GREAT WAY TO END THE SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure, I'll take the bait. GC only-
GC/RC: GC drops this one, maybe
GC/BC: BC gunning for us, I'm guessing, but we'll pull this out
GC/IC: GC gets it
GC/KC: we're gunning for them, and GC wins
GC/LFC: toss up

so.. GC wins 3, 1 toss up, 1 loss.

Jeffp???
Threes are better than twos....

Greek Tragedy

Well,

Knox and Grinnell control their own destinies with a game and a half lead over Beloit and a full two over Ripon.

Grinnell has the easiest road (pun intended) of the four, simply because they avoid Carroll and Larry U the rest of the year, though road games doesn't look like an easy task. 3-2 the rest of the way and gets in.  Ill. College, Knox and LF are wins.

Knox has a tough schedule.  I think they'll go 2-3 by winning their home games and losing their away games.

Beloit has it hard as well, with Grinnell, Lawrence, Ripon and Carroll left on the schedule.  The biggest game is the Ripon game.  If it comes down to the game vs. Carroll, that will be a lot of pressure on Beloit to win.

Ripon has three tough ones with two of those at home (Carroll and Grinnell).  I really think Ripon could win the first four and then it will again come down to that Beloit game.

Not sure how the exact tie-breakers come into play, but I'm thinking Grinnell and winner of the Beloit/Ripon game.  I just think Knox's road is too tough.

We did discuss it and I'd still have to go with Grinnell; none of the games left on the schedule will they feel like the underdog in.  The other squads have to deal with Carroll and Lawrence, who, while beatable are going to be favorites in every game they play (except of course against each other).

This tourney race is gonna get interesting very fast.

Beloit has to win two this weekend and also Ripon.  If Grinnell gets a split this weekend they are in very good shape.  Hopefully their shooters will be cold and knot this race for  playing in Appleton   tighter than ever .  Beloit has to step up the defense and intensity.  They need to make freethrows.  What huge and exciting games in Ripon and Beloit this weekend.  I think the teams with the most momentum going down the stretch will get it done.  If Grinnell splits this weekend they will get in.  If they lose 2 they will get beat out to BC and RC.  Between RC and BC the winner of that game will get in or if Beloit beats Carroll that may back them in.          SOMEBODY HAS TO BEAT LAWRENCE .  It looks like BC and Knox are long shots, maybe Carroll can.

For a team/coach/system that emphasizes national records ("National Records held by Grinnell" is a link on their team site for Pete's sake.   And don't they hang banners, too?  BTW, does the Grinnell athletic department make the banners themselves or are they official NCAA material?), it looks like J Grotberg is going to pass plenty of milestones.  Please pace yourself, and don't hurt your harm by patting him on the back.   :)  Time will tell if these milestones lead to more team championships, or just statistical glorification.
HEY PAL, DON'T BLOCK THE SHOT!

systemfan,

in the past two days i have added grotberg to my POY list,  and just today i commented on how impressive his line was vs. MC last night.  I hvae never said Grotberg sucks (redlands is the only reference to sucking i have proclaimed) just said i wouldnt anoint him an automatic scoring phenom b/c he plays in the system.

Grotberg's stat line from last night is the most impressive thing i have seen from him all year.  34 mins. 7 helpers and only 4 to's.  fantastic playing at that pace...
I could be wrong, but I doubt it....

I think that's probably a good assessment, OFS.  Honestly, there is no way for any of us to tell how he would do in a different system.  One thing you can tell is that he is very confortable on the court; he doesn't seem to be stressed out by triple teams or hurried by an expiring clock.  He's got great poise, especially for a freshman and he's already shouldering a load most freshmen couldn't.  He's got a long way to go, but he's got a lot to work with.
