Old School-

There are at least 38 high schools - both men and women - playing system ball, including Dunkerton, Ia. HS Girls who are currently state ranked.

My how things have changed in 25 years...

Back in my day, the HS girls in Dunkerton played six-girl basketball! Essentially, it was two 3-on-3 games: three girls played forward, three played defense, and they had to pass the ball over the midcourt line to transition. Best rule in that game? Two dibble limit. Oh, and since forwards only played offense - must be where GC got the idea  ;) - it wasn't unusual to have players that would score 50-60 points in a game. Find a girl who was over 6' and could shoot, you had yourself a team!

Does anyone in Iowa still play six girl? I know at one point programs had the choice to play the six or five player game.

Looked it up. Looks like the last year was 1993.

It wasn't a bad game. No real reason to play it anymore, but it was interesting. The two dribble limit made for a lot of movement and a lot of passing.

Man, I'm getting old.. :(

Nope! Done away with 13 years ago, as you just discovered! There are 6 on 6 teams of former players forming town leagues all over Iowa though. texas and Iowa were the last HS holdouts.

I remember seeing the girls 6 on 6 games on TV--don't remember alot about it though since I was fairly young at the time.  Must've been when they were at the state tournament...now I feel old even though I'm just 2 years out of college! :-X

We used to have to play those three-on-three games in gym class.  It was very frustrating, especially when your defensive players stink.  There is just such a sense of helplessness.

Still, I think like adult leagues would be awesome to watch.  Imagine if NBA teams played that way; I think it would improve things quite a bit.

Let's face it, it's a good idea for adult leagues because it gives us out-of-shape 40+ players a good chance to take a breather while the other half of the team plays!  ;) :D

We just need to get a movie made starring Ben Stiller, we could take the world by storm, like dodgeball.

From what I've seen this year...

My All-Conference Picks:

First Team-

Braier - POY/MVP (Whatever)
MacGillis
Drury
Hinz
Johnson (19.7 pts/gm 7 rbs/gm, Top ten in steals and 3pt. %)

Second Team-

Grotberg
Schmitting
Maclin
Scheper
Beckford

Honorable Mention-

Bradley
Zick
Beaird
Arseneault
McMullen
Toshner

I really didn't want to put Johnson on the first team, but his numbers are way too good....and he shot at a higher percentage then I thought.  A lot of good players are graduating this year!

It's funny that we are talking about the 3-on-3 system because I was just talking with a friend the other day who played that style in junior high and high school. She was in high school when they made the switch. She said it kind of sucked because half of the team (she was on the defense) all of a sudden weren't good enough to play because they didn't know how to shoot :)!! She said it was possible to teach the offensive players to play defense, but it was much harder to teach the defensive girls how to play offense.

Is the POY still put on the 1st team, or are they in a separate category and then you put 5 others on 1st team????

I love that this is getting so much press as "the highest scoring high school girl ever" when Lisa Leslie scored 103 in the first half of one of her high schools games, but finished with 103 as the opposing team wouldn't play the second half.  I think its all demoralizing and stupid, but this girls shoulw totally not be acting like she's the best.

Though Leslie scored 103 in a half, Cheryl Miller held the record at a 105.  Yeah, I do remember those girls getting the pub too.  It's a joke.  The coach said it was in the context of the game and reasoned that he had four reserves along with the starter when she scored the record breaking points.  Give me a break, context of the game?  I would've walked off the floor too and then and gone and kicked the other coach in the groin.  Funny how the coach said when she looked like she could break the record at halftime, "we just let her go" and the opposing coach admitted, "We just stopped playing defense."

Anyway, Jeffp, thanks for the infor.  What kind of scores are there?  Are they in the 100s as well?

Old School-
very occasionally they do-both boys and girls HS teams and it appears to be similar all round the country.  Just heard that there are several boys teams enjoying similar success; ie, winning conference tourneys, getting state ranked etc. More frequently the scores are in the high 70's to low 90's; not bad for 32 minutes of basketball.

To my knowledge, the POY is included in the 1st team.  At least, that's how its been done in the previous seasons.

Not trying to steal your thunder but add a little data to go with these to spark debate...
These are MWC numbers only...

First Team-

Braier - POY/MVP (Whatever) LU Sr
  15.7 pt (6th), 13.3 RB (1st), 4 assists (5th), 2.3 steals (1st)
MacGillis LU Sr
  15.3 pt (7th), 3.4 assists (10th), 2 steals (4th)
Drury CC Jr
  19.9 pt (3rd), 4.53 (4th) assists, 1.7 steals (6th)
Hinz BC Sr
  23.8 pt (2nd), 12.6 RB (2nd)
Johnson RC
  19.7 pt (4th), 7 RB (7th), 1.4 steals(9th)

Second Team-

Grotberg GC Fr
  31.9 pt (1st), 2 steals (4th)
Schmitting RC
  15 pt (8th), 7.4 RB (5th)
Maclin KC Jr
  19 pt (5th)
Scheper CC Sr
  14.4 pt (9th), 6.8 RB (7th)
Beckford LFC Sr
  8.2 RB (3rd)

I think I'd move Zick up onto at least the second team for many of the same reasons you put Bo Johnson on the 1st team.

Zick KC Jr
  14.4 pt (9th), 8.2 RB (3rd), 3.9 assists (6th)

His numbers match up better or equal to Beckford, Scheper, and Schmitting.

Good luck to GC against LF tomorrow. It will be a tough away game, and a heck of a way to end the regular season.
Threes are better than twos....
