Greek Tragedy

They needed to limit seating at 1400 so a completely open door is a no go (the door people have to count then).

Yeah, counting is so hard.  ;D  Apparently the admissions requirements at Lawrence aren't as hard as I thought they were since "counting" isn't a prerequisite!

I emailed "my contact" within LU and apparently she's not in charge of the ticket policy.  I asked about it and she said, "from what I've been told..." which leads me to believe someone else above her knows more (like the AD, as Sam Johnson has come up with more information).  Whatever.  If this is the best way to accolate tickets, they need a systems manager to come in and work on that!  That's all I'm saying on this subject! :-)

As for saying it's biased to the first games fans, well, I'm not sure that true either.  It does help that Sam Johnson said other schools did get tickets, but if you were a true basketball fan, you'd go and see both games.  I find it interesting that the MWC posters are already talking about next year.  Though "your" team isn't in the conference tourney and is done with their season, I would think you would instantly become a MWC fan, follow the reamining teams and cheer on your conference reps come NCAA tourney time.  Maybe I'm wrong.  ???

OS:

I doubt that all the WIAC teams fell in line and cheered for Point last year in the NCAA tourney; besides, they couldn't get a ticket at Quandt anyway.

We hosted the MWC without any issues last year.  Now we're #1.   I bet it's still not a problem.   After all, Ripon isn't here and we all know they are America's team.

Thou art non-compliant. The NRO is fair. However. We at NRO Headquarters think you may have mis-spoke about Ripon being Americas team. Do not abuse your lifetime membership. It has been awarded only once.

Statistics don't always tell the tale.  Beloit players could be too caught up trying to get him touches and forget to just play themselves.  I realize Hinz never had the talent around him like Braier did, but no tourney appearances?  He lacked intensity and whenever your best player doesn't lead, whether its defensively, at practice etc. other players follow.  If you'll notice, the best teams play with a sense of urgency all the time.  It really never looked like Beloit played like that and whether that's Hinz's fault or Youngblood's I don't know.  Now its time for a new identity for Beloit basketball.  The next leader/best player will directly efffect the teams success.

mwc4life - Very well put.  That is basically the exact same way I felt about some of Monmouth's senior studs who were looked at as leaders but I don't believe ever lived up to those expectations.  Big numbers at times, but never translated to winning at a decent percentage.

Stupid question, but did anyone get a tape of either the ESPN or CBS coverage of LU this weekend? I'm betting no, b/c if you're like me you had no idea (though I suspected College Gamenight would do something) that anything would show up for sure. But I figured it'd be worth a shot.

SJ - Believe it or not, I got the CBS coverage of LU from Sunday afternoon at halftime of the Illinois-Indiana game.  I was away from home over the weekend and not sure whether I would be back in time for all of that game, so I put a tape in to record it and caught the LU highlights also. :)

Dolph,

See this is exactly what you're missing from my point.  I would think so much more of Hinz if he averaged LESS and his teams made a tourney apperance or two.  With winning comes all those awards you speak of....all the all-conference selections.  Hinz is no where close to Braier's category because of the winning. I've watched Josh play his whole college career...and with all that ability, it never transfered to wins.  Like I said, there is something wrong with that.  The talent wasn't so bad to never get in the tourney.  It's not all Hinz's fault, but him graduating can only be a good thing.

Your post raises several question:

1) If Hinz had scored less, who would have picked up the slack over the past three years resulting in increased wins and tournament appearances (Towns is the only one who even comes to mind and he has been hurt as much as healthy)

2)  Was Hinz also a detriment to the team by breaking the rebound record at Beloit?  Should he have attempted to grab fewer rebounds which may have involved others more in the game?

I saw at least 10 Beloit games each of the past four years and cannot name a game where Hinz inhibited Beloit's chances to win.  On the other hand, in the majority of games I saw them win (far fewer than I would have liked) they would have had little or no chance with the roster they were playing with if Hinz had not been on the court.

The second player who was hurt will not be much of a factor unless his game has changed and improved in a huge way.

Unless they have a stellar recruiting class that produces 2-3 players who contribute in a major way right away they will again be below :500 and again miss the playoffs

Dolph,

How do you know about the second player if he never played a minute this year?  Did you see him play in high school?  Also, Puls was at the very last game in dress clothes.  I hope that they can bring in some quality players to help the team improve.

Yes,  I saw him play in High School.  He tended to be overmatched playing center in a very good Big Eight conference.  Please understand that this does not mean that I don't think that someone like this can play a roll on Beloit's team.  In fact, I wish the rising Senior and Junior classes both had 1-2 players like this who had been in the program for 2-3 years and could play spot minutes.  However, I see no way that he ever starts or plays major minutes.  If he does, either he will have improved at a rate that I find unlikely or the talent level at Beloit will have dropped alarmingly

I'm sorry, but with Josh Hintz he is no where near the player of Braier.  Hintz almost disapears on the defensive end.....an dthe reason I say almost is because he obviously grabbed a lot of rebounds.  Other than that from what I've seen Hintz just basically takes up space on defense.

Dolph, I doubt any of these guys are trying to take anything away from is rebounding, and you never want to "grab fewer rebounds" but what did he average in assists?  Yeah there might have been missed shots, but are you really going to tell us that none of those guards could have hit an open shot with a pass out from Hintz being double and/or triple teamed????

Beloit had guys that can play, there seemed to be a lack of intensity from all the teams I saw play.  There were games where we played Beloit and they would cause teams problems all over the court, and then there were games where they just rolled over and quit.

Dolph~

In recent years I would have to say players like Hendry and Allen come to mind as well as towns whom you mentioned (also some long curly haired guy last year looked like a promising freshman).  In a conference where just about every team has made the conference tournament in the last 4/5 years, you would think a player with the numbers Josh Hinz has, would have done better.  Obviously I wouldn't want him to grab fewer rebounds.....I'm not saying Hinz is a bad player, but I never bought into him as being "special" because of the lack of winning that went on when he was there.

C'mon Early...Hintz???

Yeah, remeber when someone was trying to sell us on Hinz's defense??? Only took 3 years and 3/4 of a season to grasp the concept.  He is/was the defined leader of Beloit for 3 or 4 years and he never brought that defenisve approach to the game.  Maybe Hinz needed that other guy to step up and be that leader for him because we all know it's not easy to be a leader...tell people things they don't want to hear....but if needing that other player to push him and his teams, then in my book he isn't that great of a player....remember I said GREAT

Early

Hinz.
:-\
Sorry about the Hintz,  ???don't know where that came from.  I suppose I lost some karma there (not like I wasn't gonna loose it anyway).

oops! I thought this was the MWC board - it's obviously the Braier/Hinz board....  ;D
Threes are better than twos....

Hinz/Braier

I weighed in earlier this year with a post.  At the time, in response to someones view that Hinz should be player of the year,  I noted that  Braier was leading the league in assists, rebounds and steals.  Coupled with his passion for winning, I believed (and still do), that there is no real comparison between the two.  Having said that, Hinz is a very, very good player and was for four years.  Best pure front court scorer in the league all four years.  Also, unselfish.  By that, I do not mean a great assist person, but always willing to work within the flow of the offense and rarely forced shots.

No here is where I will reopen an earlier hornets nest..... I, for one think Hinz had some talent around him the last year or two.  Maybe not the equal of LU, but still talent.  I think  big part of the difference was potentially coaching.    That has been a big difference in my view between LU and Beloit.

I think Beloit fans have to look at the last 4 years as a missed opportunity.
