Hoops Fan-
Both Stinson and Blaylock left school 3 weeks ago-before Morgan got axed - and both plan to enter the draft.

Stinson is a cocky little snot who should fit in with most big-headed NBA stars just fine. I have no personal contact with Blaylock, and wish I had none with stinson...with a very small s.

Wow, I didn't know you were that into the ISU scene.  I can't imagine Blaylock even gets sniff from the NBA.  Stinson is good, but I'm not sure his season has done enough for him.  I had no clue they were losing so much this year.  Man, they are going to stink.  No wonder Arsenault turned the job down.

While we are talking about DI ball, HOW ABOUT THEM CHOKEYES!

please, dear god, don't let this loss screw up alfords move to indiana. please.

jeffp - I've been meaning to post this for a couple days now since hearing of other head coach hirings, but just now finally got around to doing so.  Doesn't look like you'll be getting your wish because it's looking more and more like Alford will remain with the Hawkeyes--since all the places he was rumored to be heading to have hired other coaches to lead their programs.  Mainly Kelvin Sampson at Indiana, Mike Anderson at Missouri, and was his name mentioned with the Kansas St. job (which is now Bob Huggins) or did I imagine that?

Also, a quick congrats to former Fighting Scot Joe O'Brien on recently being named the new head coach at Idaho St.  He did some very good things with a couple of strong juco programs, Southeastern (IA) and Lincoln (IL), and it's nice to see him get a shot at a D-I job.

Arsenault didn't get a lick of consideration for the ISU job.  He probably could wash the team bus if he wanted to but no serious AD is going to let his team play that circus act that Grinnell plays.  I think it is time for you all to admit it is a sideshow and will never be viewed as a way to win.

Actually, I don't believe Sagan WAS an athiest but he was very MUCH against organized religion... as was Jesus. Read JC's words very carefully.

Jesus wasn't against organized religion at all. He was a faithful Jew who worshiped in the Temple in Jerusalem and who invoked Judaism's scriptures as having divinely-inspired authority. He was against the people who ran that particular organized religion (the priests) and the people who codified it (the Pharisees).

Blah-blah-blah...circus act...blah-blah-blah...sideshow...

Wow. Original thought there proudof.

You're really going to change minds with that type of insight.

Hoosier Titan

Interesting range of topics in here tonight!

As someone who was a grad student of Sagan's, my favorite quote of his on religion is, "An atheist is someone who knows more than I do."  I'm sure that he had his leanings in that direction, and the quote may have been a way of diverting arguments...but he was pretty strict on what we can know and not know.  I'm pretty sure he stood behind the movie script of Contact, although it ends somewhat differently from the book.

Joel Achenbach's Captured by Aliens has several good chapters describing conversations with Sagan in his last year or so.

tonight?

Well, you are in the MWC page here...home of the haikus, circus act/side show (Grinnell), "The Roop" and the NRO (New Roop Order), the underappreciated Lawrence University, the Diehardfan MWC fan club, Sam Johnson's Lawrence/MWC blog, and everything else I can't think of off the top of my head! lol.  :D

Only the old LMC page can rival the trash-talking that happens here!  ::)

HT,

By Sagan's own definitions, I don't think he could be an atheist (though probably an agnostic leaning that direction).  He made it pretty clear that ONLY information that could be tested could be fully accepted.  Since the existence (or not) of God is untestable, ...

Easy there AM. My mind has been changed. Previously I thought of "The System" as the circus. Now I know it is only a circus act, not the entire show.  :D

Old School,

Don't forget about my "Roopsville" blog.

et al,

The Port deal went by the wayside because of ties to the middle east. Before we watch the D1 Final Four tomorrow let us not forget that George Mason has a campus in Dubai. Couldn't buy our ports but they are attempting to buy our National Championship. Can't anybody else see that this is a classic bait and switch move. Clearly they are vying for control of the NRO and are taking a D1 route to get there. Very interesting.

Sager-
I think it is safe to say that Jesus was a "pick and Choose" follower of Judaism capable of washing feet and trashing open prayer while at times equating the hierarchy of the Synagogue, the (popular at the time) Pharisees (an offshoot of the Hasidim-the earliest  pop Judaism), and the Priests of Rome. Gary Wills, the Northwestern U. history professor, has a new book-"What Jesus Meant"-which has a great discussion of this topic.

Hoops Fan-
I DON'T follow ISU that much, but the story has been plastered all over the news-both print and electronic-for weeks now. My opinion of stinson comes from a personal encounter.

Maverick-
Yeah, the whole state is bummed by the turn of events at Iowa. 2 more wins in the NCAA tourney and he woulda been gone. Now we seem to be stuck with the sob.

proudofLU-
to quote my friend sf86, "blah blah blah blah..."
BTW- 6 DIII , 7 NAIA, and about 40 High school AD's "allow" system ball to be played and the number interested is growing on a yearly basis. Evolution may well take care of the narrow minded. ;D :D ;D

The Roop

Details of the "Americas Team" team banquet are still coming in and are rather entertaining. For now only one recruit to speak of. No specifics really other than he is from Elkhorn and big. Could improve his ball handling skills a bit but a body in the middle is certainly a need. There's also a junior there that will likely be recruited next year.

Some at that practiced with the team are from the Chicago area, but no commitments as yet.

Does anyone else think that Hoosier Titan is extremely neato? :o  Between West Side Story and her studies at an extremely respected university under such an interesting person... I don't know... but something. Maybe this all just serves to prove that this board need more women. :D

Well, I don't know about that... it's testable, we just have no say over whether God decides to play along, so the lack of comprehensive and overwhelming proof doesn't mean no. Ah isn't live interesting. :)

Regarding the portion of your post I did not quote, ALL boards could use more women!

Think about your statement - if God exists but chooses not to play along, the proposition is untestable.  If S/He does not exist, the proposition is untestable (because of the possiblity of #1 above).  Ergo, only persons relying on faith can be either theists or atheists.  All people who prefer human rationaliity HAVE to be agnostics.
