Never been to a Waffle House, so I'm in no position to judge them. But your life is going downhill pretty rapidly if you find yourself eating at a White Castle. Or at the very least, your sobriety and the health of your digestive tract are going downhill. Just a couple more of the myriad reasons why they call 'em "sliders".

Out here in northern NJ around where they originated we call them belly-bombers.  Sliders was a generic Navy term for any hamburger or reasonable facsimile thereof.  I love the taste of White Castle burgers, I am good about once a month or so after rehearsal with the band.  The safer bet is the frozen white castle from the supermarket.

Waffle House is a little like the White Castle of breakfast restaurants.

Not a big White Castle fan. I was always a little concerned about trying it since the vast majority of stories about White Castle involve: (A) large amounts of alcohol, (B) a timeframe of 2 or 3 AM, and (C) limited financial resources. Frequently there is an additional component (D) of being physically sick. Somehow these stories didn't present a glowing endorsement of the restaurant. I ate there once. Nothing special.

Mr. Sager, you have apparently never made the overnight drive to Florida because that's when you eat at Waffle House! I think there are state laws in all states south of the Mason-Dixon line that require that a Waffle House be built at every interstate exit. When it's 5 AM and that all that is open, you're looking at biscuits and (pork sausage) gravy, and grits. They sit on your stomach much in the same way sliders do. On the plus side, it's still one of the few places in the world you can still find a waitress that will call you "Hun", and that HAS to be worth something!

DHF, I don't know whether to be happy or hurt that you don't hate my guts too.   :-\

It must be my middle age and the fact I haven't driven down south in a long time.  The last time I drove south every exit had a Stuckeys or Howard Johnsons to eat at.  I used to love both, especially HoJo's.  The one exception is the HoJo's in Fayetteville NC, the chicken croquets gave me food poisoning.  I didn't eat another chicken croquet for years after that.

It HAS been a while since you drove down south (what like 25 years?). An open Stuckeys is a rarity. Hojo's only exist as hotels not as the restaurant/ice cream parlor they once were.

I took my 9 and 11 year-olds down to FLA for a Spring Training baseball game last month, and I had to explain what a Stuckey's was when I saw one that was actually open.  ::)

Hmmm, a Stuckey's pecan log....

Are you kidding me?  Those supermarket sliders are horrible! lol.

To tell you the truth, White Castle is like going to an LMC game, they're hard to digest, but at least you can brag and say you've tried it!  ;)

Personally, I think those sliders and the chicken rings are horrible.  But, at least I can say I've been there..and in the midwest, where there really aren't many, that's something I can be proud of...besides, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is a pretty funny movie.

On the other hand,  I have  no problem eating at Waffle Houses.  I still have no idea what Grits are, but the rest of the greasy food is like a poor man's Country Kitchen/Denny's.

Isn't discussing the relative quality of supermarket sliders vs. 'fresh' sliders a little like discussing the relative weight of the offensive linemen in the NFL?

Knightstalker

The supermarket white castles don't bombard the digestive system as hard as the fresh ones.  Another common name for white castle around here is Rat Burgers.

It has been twenty years since I have been further south than Delaware or Maryland.

I'm a big  fan of calling people hun. I'm basically pretending to be from southern culture when I'm really not.  ;D The best moments are when I guy from my generation takes it the wrong way.  :D

Don't worry, I "hate your guts" too, I just didn't have any reason to mention that I hated your guys because you weren't involved in the conversation.  ;)

Wow, she can hate my guts and still call me "Hun". She IS multi-talented!

Given the kimchi and Spam discussions, can't you claim to be Southern? No one has to know you're talking about South Korea rather than the southern US... :D ;D

OK.  now that we are talking about White Castle...it is true that white castle tastes best at 2-3 am in the morning.  The cheeseburgers are best.

Having said that.  I think the mini-corn dogs were the best... Unfortunately, they do not serve them anymore.  Tells you something about my stomach...it can take anyting.  You cannot beat the taste of grease.

OK, I had real White Castle for the first time last summer.  It was after midnight, there were nine drunk homeless guys outside and I got yelled at by a police office for giving them food.  I'm pretty sure that's the quintissential White Castle experience?

Verdict:  The suck.

Roop is right....I am well past the pre-30 phase of life.....I just have a good memory.  "back in the day" prior to heading home for the night, we would hit a white castle.  I actually like the taste, but then I like a lot strange stuff.   BTW, White Castles have been around for something like 80 years so someone is eating them besides the homeless.

The original inspiration for White Castle is the White Mana diner in Jersey City on Tonnelle Ave.  It was originally at the Worlds Fair in NY in 26(?).  It was moved to Jersey City after the worlds fair and has been a land mark diner since.  It is also very good at 3:00 am.
