Greg, I actually meant Picard's nephew. DS9 has never been interesting to me at all, much less to the point that I would know the actor names.

Extra credit for you, April, for the obscurity of that reference.  ;)

If the greatest entertainer of the 20th century is not in it, it really isn't Star Trek. There is only one captain of the Enterprise, James Tiberius Kirk.

Has anybody seen How William Shatner Changed the World on the History Channel yet?

You're pulling my leg, MD, right? The History Channel didn't really do such a thing, did they? As a huge fan of the Hamasaurus, I'd love to see such an episode. No pop-culture junkie can ever get enough Shatner.

I can never decide which I like better -- the Shat-man's surreal commercials for Priceline.com or that famous clip of him onstage at some late '70s awards show reciting Bernie Taupin's lyrics to Elton John's "Rocket Man" while dressed in a tux and holding a cigarette. The only thing that surpasses Shatner's weirdly compelling acting style in terms of offbeat coolness is his genial willingness to poke fun at himself in a way that very few cultural icons of his stature are willing to do.

One of my favorite pop-culture insider references is the fact that the writers of Cheers dubbed Woody Harrelson's character "Woodrow Tiberius Boyd" in honor of the greatest captain in Starfleet history.

Leaving Lawrence for IWU? Bah, what would be the appeal of that? Tharp is in the middle of monumental change in a mens basketball program for a college who is a least as strong academically as IWU. He'll be leaving a tremendous legacy someday. What's the appeal of leaving a place that adores him to an environment where you will ... "never be bridges?" IWU is neither the earth nor the sun. They can't just get one of the best coaches in basketball just because they want him and their local newspaper feels like speculating.

I think he would leave in a second - he has done everything he can at Lawrence, and IWU is one of the best DIII jobs in the country. Sorry LU faithful, but that would be a no-brainer. As good as LU has been under Tharp, it is not nor will it ever be IWU in basketball.

I suspect reality is somewhere between these two sentiments.

Pat, does that mean that Illinois Wesleyan is Mercury or Venus?

The next two airings of How William Shatner Changed the World.

Hmm. It looks more like it should've been called "How Star Trek Changed The World". The History Channel probably called it "How William Shatner Changed The World" so that they could entice the Hamasaurus into hosting it.

That's a little disappointing, since articles about how Star Trek anticipated modern technology are a dime-a-dozen. Still, I'd probably watch the program.

Ralph may be more on top of this than I, but I do think the "new" regional thing is far from getting implimented.  In fact, I wasn't aware it had been officially introduced.  I have heard speculation to that effect, but I'm not sure it will carry too much weight at this point.  Honestly, I think there is more traction for the holiday break thing, even though it wasn't adopted this year.

Here, here on the willingness of Shatner to poke fun at himself. Didn't he just win an Emmy or something for his work on Boston Legal? Also, if you're a fan, the cable channel TV Land has a new series called Living in TV Land that featured a show on Shatner. I found the preview of the show at this link http://www.tvland.com/originals/litvl/preview.jhtml

One more thing...I love the "Rocket Man" clip, but laughed out loud when Family Guy had Stewie 'recreate' the clip.

You know Shatner did the same thing a few years back at one of the award shows (Golden Globes or MTV Movie Awards, maybe; I doubt the Oscars would allow it), where he did the dramatic reading of each of the songs nominated for best original song.  It was spectacular or should I say scrumtralescent!

Greg... what about interstellar dust? :D

I may have never gotten into the other series that much, but I know a LOT about TNG... no conferences or costumes or crazy extra-show stuff, I've just seen all the episodes at least once. I went through the whole DVD set while knitting a blanket for a friends wedding. I think the idea of a great man's (albiet fictional) genetic line dying out scares me that's all. :D

I love Shatner in Miss Congeniality... great stuff right there. :) You guys totally just like him cause of all his alien seductions. ::)

I pick the Waffle House dialogue over this tired Star Trek drivel.

Since that got no response in 4 hours, I say let's discuss Commander Shelby.

True, yet irrelevant. Im thinking of it more from the "Git R Done" perspective.

Major Kira from DS9 will be the next topic.
